Tables, Notes and Design Methods

1. Aspects to take into account in the design of RCS exchangers:

Minimum reinforcements in nozzles according to the following table:

Nozzle (nominal) OD Width Reinforcement OD Reinforcement

3 76.2 89 40 169

4 101.6 114 50 214

6 152.4 168 60 288

8 203.2 219 70 359

10 254 273 85 443

12 304.8 323 90 503

14 355.6 355 100 555

16 406.4 406 110 626

18 457.2 457 120 697

20 508 508 130 768

22 558.8 558 140 838

24 609.6 609 150 909

26 660.4 660 160 980

28 711.2 711 180 1071

Reinforcement thickness = receiver thickness

Nozzle projections:

Nozzle projection = ID / 2 + 3.t + 150 + Y

Where:
ID = enclosure ID
t = shell thickness
Y = tube flange length according to class (# 150, # 300, # 600) ASME B16.5.
When two exchangers are stationary, the distance between CL is:
(nozzle projection) x 2 + 4mm (gasket)

Distance between welds according to TR standard:

(These dimensions will be taken as a minimum)
L = minimum distance between welds
t = thickness

L = 4.t if t <= 20mm

L = 3 t if 20 <t <= 40 mm
L = 2.5 t if t> 40mm.

2. Observations about the calculates in the program:

Calculation of self-reinforcing nozzles: the RCS program performs the calculation similar to TR
(RCS the H-type lines)
The number of bolts will be calculated according to the smallest spacing between bolts allowed
and with the smallest possible diameter. (RCS default)
Regarding the SA-266 grade 4 material, the program uses SA-266 grade 2. The stress values
are the same in both materials, so there is no significant difference between them for calculation
effects.

3. Location of supports according to TR standard:

As far as possible, and as long as the location of the nozzles allows it, the dimensions indicated
in the table will be followed.
In all hulls, it will be that the saddles are located Lt / 4 from the end of each head. (L5 ~ Lt / 2)
Also use the excel sheet for minimum and maximum values according to the location of the
nozzles. 100mm saddle width is assumed and 250mm free distance between saddle and nozzle
flange (for reference)

tubes length
L5 L6
Ft mm

20 6096 3700 1300
16 4877 2700 1300
Floating head design (S and T type)
OTL = ID flange(floating head) - 9 mm
ID flange (floating head) x cos 45 = IR dished head
Type S: ID shell cover - OD floating head = 32 mm

Iterate with RCS, in general, depending on the shell ID:

ID shell cover = ID shell + (75 to 150)

Type T: ID shell Cover – OD of floating head = A(table) (according to TR)

equipment diameter A (mm) RCS default (inch / mm)

Until 17” Until 432 4 0.25 6
18” to 23” 432 to 508 5 0.25 6
20” to 36” 508 to 915 7 0.375 9.5
36” to 43” 915 to 1092 10 0.5 13
43” to 50” 1092 to 1270 13 0.5 13
> 50” > 1270 0.75 19

The clearances calculated by RCS, although in some cases do not coincide with the TR
standards, are in the same order and slightly more conservations.
When the bolts are greater than 1 1/2 ", shaft type bolts will be used. A free space towards the
bolts of approximately 220 to 250 mm will be provided for the tensioner. (On one side only, and
measured from the reinforcement)
