1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

T
ransform Aid International Australia was a non-government development
organization, which was recognized and fully accredited by the Department of
Foreign Affairs and Trade, the department that now manages the Australian
Government’s Overseas Development Assistance program. Transform Aid International
provides funding and technical assistance to development and relief activities to 40
number of National Partner NGOs in some 18 countries in South and South East Asia the
Pacific Islands and in Africa.

Transform Aid International Bangladesh was established in 1999. Our vision “A world
where poverty has ended and all people enjoy the fullness of life God intended.” In this
regard, to achieve the vision, Transform Aid International Bangladesh has been working
through the partner organizations to accelerate their works to reach their ultimate goals
of reducing poverty.

The main task of the Branch office is to oversee its supported projects in Bangladesh
including develop the capacity of the partner organizations by providing capacity
building support; coaching and mentoring for effective poverty reduction programs
targeting disadvantaged and vulnerable groups; provide technical assistance in the
development activities of the partner organizations thereby increasing their ability to
implement projects; assist the partners in their activities to maintain the standard as
required thereby increasing the opportunities for the poor through the partners’
development initiatives; facilitate meaningful networks with and between the partners
and other relevant and suitable organizations whereby the development activities
more easily and are better able to meet their objectives; assist the partner organizations
in project design and implementation to promote and strengthen sustainable livelihood
opportunities for the disadvantaged and marginalized people groups and to increase
access of public resources; ensure regular and thorough monitoring of programs and
finances of the partner organizations; arrange project assessment and external
evaluation of the partner organizations when and as required; support partners to be
able to respond immediately and effectively in time of national and where appropriate
localized disasters to save lives and assets; organize appropriate trainings, seminars,
workshops and conferences for the partner organizations to enhance the level of skill
and overall capacity as well as to share knowledge, experiences and best
development practices; and assist Transform Aid International in the effective
management of partner relationships in Bangladesh.

1.2 Objective of the Training

The purpose of the training was to help partners to facilitate beneficiaries in selecting
the IGAs/ Social Enterprise that were most suitable and appropriate for beneficiaries.
The IGAs/Social Enterprise give enough income to make a substantial and permanent
improvement to the beneficiary household’s life that will sustain after the project ends.
Through this training TAI intends to strengthen partner’s capacity:

 to assess context, appropriateness and feasibility of IGA/ Social Enterprise;


 to analyze cost-effectiveness of IGA/Social Enterprise;
 to help CBO/SHG to assess, plan, design, implement social Enterprise;
 to empower marginalized groups, including youth, women and persons-with-
disabilities(PwD), to be social entrepreneurs;
 to design effective M&E framework for IGA/Social Enterprise;
 to help Gender integration in social Enterprise;
 to risk analysis for the IGAs/Social Enterprise;
 to ensure sustainability of social Enterprise and value for money.

1.3 Methodology and Approach of the Training

Training design and the preliminary exercise had done at desk reviewing different
training module on the relevant subject matter. The course coordinator discussed and
prepared the course material in consultation with TAI and accommodating all the
feedback and comments of TAI. CC followed the following steps to develop the course
materials.

 Reviewed the Transform Aid International Bangladesh Partner Organization’s


project documents
 Discussed with the Transform Aid International Bangladesh staffs to understand the
specific needs of the participants.
 Reviewed and analyzed the participants education, age and professional position
 Reviewed different training module on the relevant subject matter and based on
practical experience the course outline and module was developed
 Developed and submitted a draft training outline training presentation slides
 Finalized course curriculum based on prior discussion and feedback from
Transform Aid International Bangladesh office.

a. Approach of Training conduction

The defined approaches had applied during the training period for fulfilling the
intended goals.
e. The training was facilitated by English on an easy understandable way.

h. In order to collect the necessary feedbacks, experience gained and lesson


learnt, the group discussion and role play method had adopted

on practical hands-on skills, group discussions and practical exercises based
on their own field experience.

c. Organization and Management of the Training

- Selection of Trainees: The training program was designed for 27 participants


(however 27 participants were participated) who have been involving in
different projects of the TAI partners organizations. The participants had selected
from the respective Partner NGOs. The TAI had necessary follow-up and further

had organized in YWCA Guest Male Female
House at Mhammadpur in
Dhaka. The training room was
quite and calm with enough
space and controlled temperature. All the necessary supports were available in
the venue. The training had conducted from 26 to 28 September,2016 from 09.00
to 17.00 June 22-29, 2013

- Materials and equipments: All the necessary training materials and equipments
were available during the training. Every after closing the day session the
materials were checked whether anything needs to purchased or not. However,
enough materials and equipments were allocated for each of the participants
of the training. A list of training materials and equipments is attached in the
report as annex.

- Preparation of handouts: Training is not just a verbal and practical class only. In
this training, the trainees were provided relevant handouts for all course/subject
matters. In this regard, the handouts of the training were provided to the
participants, the task were achieved in consultation and coordination with the
respective resource persons

1.4. Course Coordinator

G F Rabbani has about 9 years professional experience in successfully managing,


implementing and monitoring market development and private sector engagement
program in food security & livelihood, DRR and life skill sector. G F Rabbani has lot of
experience in dealing with challenging and result oriented development project. The
course coordinator has facilitated number of training like- TOT on Women’s Economic
Leadership and Unpaid Care work analysis for 15 project coordinators and technical
officers of partner organization of Oxfam, Training on Value Chain Design and Market
Development to Social Development Foundation (SDF) in Bangladesh, Training on
Enterprise Development for Project Coordinator and Business Development Officers of 7
partners NGOs of Oxfam, Training on Vulnerability and Risk Assessment (VRA), Training
on Business Plan and Management, Training on Market Extension Plan, Training on
Income Generating Activities for pro-poor livelihood development etc.

2. PROCEEDING OF THE TRAINING SESSION

2.1 First Day (26 September,


2016)

The opening session of the


training was conducted
informally. The training program
was started with the Morning
Prayer and welcome remarks by
Mr. Nathan Sarker. In opening
session, Mr. Nathan from TAI had
given his opening remarks. He
delivered his congratulatory
remarks to the participants for
getting success and better
opportunity in the field of Social
Enterprise Development. Mr.
Rabbani welcomed the
participants and briefed about
the training program and its
objective. He also requested for
their active participation from the participants in the training. The introductory session
was run in participatory way. Ruth Shampa Mallik facilitated this session. In this session,
all the training team and the participants introduced themselves and shared their
expectation. In order to assess the interest and expectation of the participants from the
training program, participants were asked to write their interest, expectations from the
training and how they were going to utilize the knowledge gained from this training.
After the collection of expectations from the participants, a brief presentation was
made to identify their queries.

After sharing the objectives of the training, the first session of the first day was about
introduction with the basic concept and common term of the business. Participants
were introduced with types of business and characteristics of small business, demand
supply situation and its relations in market. At first of the this session, all the participants
were divided into 5 mix groups named (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)

After first day first session it was an interesting session regarding the market and
understanding of market system. Participants were enjoyed lot in this session. It was an
interactive session and participants willingly contributed in this session. Participants were
initiated with the three major market parts; core market, service market and enabling
environment.

Role Play: Participants were played a role on the market system. 12 to 13 participants
together formed a “Tomato market system”. Each participant acted as market actor
and respective stakeholder to produce and sale tomato toward consumers.

The objective of the role play was to introduce participants with market system of a
specific product. From this role play participants came to understand

Group Work: After describing the market system, market actor and market dynamics
each group were assigned to draw a market map according to the choice of the
group. There were five groups tried to draw a market map and the work was done
successfully the group members.

In the third session of the first day, the participants came to know about the value chain
and its importance; commercial viable solution and the new approach of
development. Participants also understood about the social business and criteria for
social business selection. The facilitator also introduced the participants with two
methods for rapid selection a social enterprise from a long list of business. One is
Attractive matrix and another is ranking matrix.

Group work: In this session participants of the five groups have done a fantastic group
work individually. All the groups were asked to select a social enterprise from a list of
rural business or IGAs they are implementing in the existing project. Every group worked

From this group work participants came to understand how they will select a potential
enterprise from different sector with different criteria.

Finally, facilitator reviewed all the session in brief through the interactive method. The
day was closed with the evening prayer.

2.2 Second Day (27 September, 2016)

2nd day covered the module 3 and 4 with the objective to help participants assessing,
planning, and designing, implementing social enterprises; to know the service market
assessment for the enterprise development and to review the role of facilitator
implementing a social enterprise and analyze risk for the social Enterprise.

As per the group formation on the previous day, one from each of the group members
recapped the first day’s session. Before that the 2nd day was started with Morning

Prayer. Facilitator rearranged the sitting arrangement also in the 2nd day and asked to
the participants to share one point they wanted to know more. Participants promptly
addressed the issues they wanted to emphasis more.

Facilitator briefed the activities of previous days and made some recommendations on
the previous day’s activities so as to make the training more effective. The first session of
the second day was concentrated on service market analysis and introduction on
Business Development Service and actors of BDS.

Case study: after discussion on service market 4 case studies were supplied to 4 groups
to read and discuss among the group members. The case studies were on four different
enterprises of four different areas of Bangladesh. Participants of each group went
through the case on the particular social enterprise and discussed among themselves.

Group work: After reviewed the case participants were asked to find out the 1 major
constraints and 1 major opportunity of the enterprises. Every group identified the
constraint and opportunity from their case then present and justified their own way.

In the second session, facilitator briefed about intervention designing for the social
enterprise in participatory way. Facilitator provided some real time example to explain
how to design an intervention in an enterprise development program. Participants were
enthusiastically contributed in this session and it was very interesting.

In third session, the participants were acquired knowledge about the social impact and
economic benefit of enterprise development. Facilitator described the risk analysis of
enterprise. Participants interacted with the facilitator to analyze the on business risk,
environmental and political risk. To design a competitive enterprise facilitator clearly
described the cost benefit analysis (CBA), return on investment (ROI) and social return
on investment (SORI).

Group work: Participants were asked to design an intervention. This task was
deliberately design to accomplish the case study. Participants of each group designed

an intervention based on the previous group work. Each group developed an


intervention addressed on the constraint or the opportunity they dug out earlier from
the case study.

The next of the second day was concentrated on developing the business plan for the
enterprise and the implication of business plan In the last session of the second day
participants introduced with some social enterprise business model and came to know
how and enterprise need to design engaging multilevel of stakeholders. Participants
also introduced with basic of business plan. They were understood what the importance
of business plan is, what is difference between proposal and business plan who are the
client of business plan. Facilitator described the different part of business plan in brief.

2.3 Third Day (28 September, 2016)

To ensure sustainability of social enterprise and to design effective M&E framework the
third day was concentrated on business plan and log frame design. At the morning of
the 3rd day, review of second day's sessions was done by the participants in random
basis.

First session was third day was started with the reviewed the business plan preparation
and participants were divided into groups and prepare the business plan.

Group work: the four groups selected four enterprises from the ongoing project and
develop business plan. After that each group presented the business plan.

The second session of this day was on monitoring and evaluation of social enterprise.
After a brief presentation of facilitator, participants were figure out a M& E framework
based on the intervention that designed in the previous day.

After completion of group work a short session was conducted by Mr. Nathan Sarker on
Report preparation on the program.

The closing session was conducted informally. Mr. Milton Dhali, had conducted brief
discussion with the trainees about the overall aspect of the training program. He
delivered his congratulatory remarks to the participants. From the participants Mr. Atul
Marandi presented his views about the training. In his view, he found that they were
very satisfied with the training. He also thanked to TAI for organizing such type of
training. He added that all the participants had a lot of knowledge gained on various
aspects of social enterprise development and management. After completion of
congratulatory remarks participants received the training completion certificate.

3. TRAINING EVALUATION, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

3.1 Training Evaluation

The evaluation of training was achieved from the overall process of training
conduction, comparison with similar trainings provided in previous times. The feedback
provided from the participants had incorporated in the evaluation process which was
very useful to conduct much better training in future. After completion of the training a
training evaluation was conducted to reveal the overall performance of the training.
The evaluation of the training from the participants is presented as under

3.2 Action plan develop

The participants developed an action plan to roll out the learning of the training.
Participants of every organization will prepare a business plan based on their real field
experience and share it to the TAI by 30 Novemebr,2016.

3.3 Conclusion and Recommendation

- 27 participants were participated in training program from the respective partner


NGOs of TAI
- The evaluation of the training by the participants shows that the training has
been quite useful and practicable.
- The participants have provided certain comments and suggestions at the time of
training evaluation. They need to be considered in future.
- Positive Aspects

b. The participants acquired the knowledge about the social enterprise
development and management aspect.
c. Self confidence builds up to the participants due to the training
d. The arrangement of the overall training was best.
e. The training team and all the resource persons very professional and had
