RECAP
In the previous lesson, you have learned the different viewpoints on local or
global issues. One of those is about health. The United Nations, since its inception,
has been actively involved in promoting and protecting good health worldwide.
Leading that effort within the UN system is the World Health Organization.

To have a good health, you must be a good listener especially to the pieces of
advice from the health workers.

LESSON

Listening is one of the most important skills that a person must have. It helps
us to develop an accurate self-concept. Thus, improving our listening skills can help us
to be better and more successful learners.
However, always remember how to react intelligently to what you have
listened to. In other words, before you react into something, you need to digest or
investigate before immediately agreeing to ensure effective communication.

There are five different types of listening that are essentials to know when deciding
what your goals as listeners:

Types of Listening Skills:

1. Appreciative Listening

When you listen for appreciation you are listening for enjoyment. Think
about the music you listen to. You usually listen to music because you enjoy it. The
same can be said for appreciative listening when someone is speaking.

2. Empathic Listening

During this type of listening you are trying to identify what the speaker’s
understanding by stepping into other’s shoes about the situation in which he/she is
discussing. Your goal during this time is to focus on the speaker, not on yourself.
You are trying to understand from the speaker’s perspective.

3
3. Comprehensive Listening

If you are watching the news, listening to a lecture, or getting directions from
someone, you are listening to understand or to comprehend the message that is
being sent. This process is active. In the class, you should be focused and taking
down notes on the speaker’s main ideas, identifying the structure of the speech and
evaluating the supports he/she offers as evidence.

4. Critical Listening

Critical listening is listening to evaluate the content of the message. As a

critical listener you are listening to all parts of the messages, analyzing it, and
evaluating what you heard. When engaging in critical listening, you are also
critically thinking. You are making mental judgments based on what you see, hear,
and read. Your goal as a critical listener is to evaluate the message that is being
sent and decide for yourself if the information is valid.

5. Pseudo Listening

Pseudo listening is pretending to listen but not really absorbing anything from the
conversation. Believe it or not, you do this for many reasons.

Guided Practice:

Read the following and analyze the text. Choose the best reaction.
1. When Bob was involved in a serious automobile accident, Barry visited him in
the hospital. What would be the best listening style for Barry to use when
listening to Bob’s explanation on the details of the accident?

A. Empathic listening
B. Appreciative listening
C. Comprehensive listening
D. Critical listening
The answer here is emphatic listening. Remember that in emphatic listening,
we put ourselves in the shoes of the speaker if they are sad and afraid like Bob in
the example, you should not show a happy reaction because it is not appropriate in
the situation.
2. Mary loves listening to the song 'Chet and the Cow Pokes' on the radio. When the
music comes on, she smiles, sings along with every word and sometimes breaks
into dance. What type of listening does Mary show?

A. Appreciative listening
B. Critical listening
C. Pseudo-listening
D. Comprehensive listening
In this example the answer is appreciative listening. Why? Because when Mary
listens to a song, her mood changes and that means that she is enjoying the
moment.

4
3. Carina has been talking to her friends about her most recent date with Steve for
an hour. Her friends are looking away, fiddling with their phones, and are
generally disinterested. What type of listening is taking place?

A. Pseudo-listening
B. Comprehensive listening
C. Critical listening
D. Empathic listening
Pseudo listening was shown in this example because the people involved were
there physically but they were not attentive to what the speaker talked about.

ACTIVITIES
A. Act as if you are watching news about weather forecast. Answer the questions
below the transcript. Encircle your answer.
Weather Forecast
Hello and good morning! Well, we're off to a good start in the south this week,
as most of the rain from the weekend has disappeared – just a few patches of cloud
and maybe some showers here on the east coast. They'll all clear up by lunchtime,
though. Over the next day or so, London and the area around Kent can expect a
couple of isolated showers, but mostly dry through until Thursday.
It's not such good news for the north-west this week, I'm afraid: more wet
weather, and not a lot of sunshine. Some of today's showers will be heavy – and
even thundery in Manchester and across the Pennines. Leeds will escape the
thunderstorms, with drizzle and light rain only throughout the rest of the day and
tonight.
Elsewhere it becomes dry today, but with some foggy patches towards Wales.
In England, tomorrow morning will see a dry, bright start in most places, with high
temperatures throughout the week. We might see one or two thunderstorms
appearing as the week goes on, with temperatures everywhere at 29 to 30 degrees.
By the weekend, unfortunately, the dry weather will make way for mostly
cloudy skies and rain. The rain will move from Scotland, down towards the north and
reach the south coast by Saturday afternoon. Temperatures, at least, will stay mostly
warm at around 21 degrees for the weekend. It might feel like a nice change from the
high twenties and early thirties we'll see in the week. That's all from me until
tomorrow. Enjoy the mini-heatwave while you can!
1. It will start raining at lunchtime today in the east. TRUE FALSE

2. The weather in the north-west will be worse than in the south. TRUE FALSE

3. There will be thunder in Leeds tonight. TRUE FALSE

5
4. Wet weather will move from the north to the south at the TRUE FALSE
weekend.

5. It will stay hot when the rain comes. TRUE FALSE

B. Assume that you are listening in a conversation. After reading the listening text
answer the activity that follows.

Talking about Rumors

Will: Kiera, have you heard John isn't coming back and they might even fire him?

Kiera: No! I knew he was away but I thought it was for personal reasons?

Will: I'm pretty sure that's not the full story. Have you ever worked with him?

Kiera: A long time ago, but … well, I've heard stories about him for years.

Will: I've never worked with him directly but I know people that have and they say
he was always shouting and screaming, threatening to fire people. And
Susanne told me he took credit for one of her ideas. She had this idea for a
project and she brought it up at the monthly creative workshop and he liked it
– everybody did. But she saw the notes from the meeting and there was no
mention of her name anywhere. John had agreed with her and repeated some
of the things she said and the notes made it look like they were his ideas in
the first place. He made her do all the work planning it, then when the project
actually got started. Susanne was moved to something else.

Kiera: It won an award, didn't it?

Will: Yeah, but Susanne didn't get to share it – there was zero recognition of her
contribution. She was furious but she couldn't do anything about it. Not if she
wanted to keep her job.

Kiera: Yeah, it's almost impossible to report people who are as high up as John is,
or was.

Will: How did you find working with him, then?

Kiera: Well, you know what you said about him shouting at people? I've been in
meetings with him and we all learned to keep our mouths shut. It was
horrible. People were genuinely afraid of him.

Will: Did you ever see him stealing people's ideas?

Kiera: It was never that obvious. He was a genius. He had incredible vision but,
you know, there was a whole team of people working with him. Not every
single idea came from him and after a while it's not easy to say, 'Oh, this
idea was mine and this idea was yours.' For me, the bigger problem was that
you could be in his good books and then suddenly, with no explanation, you
were out. And if you were out, life got very difficult.

Will: I heard women in particular had a hard time working with him.

6
Kiera: Yeah, well, like I said, you had to stay in his good books. So, if there was a
comment that made you feel uncomfortable, you didn't say anything.

Will: Did that happen to you?

Kiera: Not to me, no, but we all knew … and no one said anything. And I was lucky I
didn't have that much contact with him myself.

Will: They're doing a full investigation so I suppose a lot of these stories are going
to come to light.

Kiera: I hope so. I really hope he's not coming back.

Safety is something we should all think more carefully about. The world around
us can be a pretty dangerous place. Even our homes are full of danger. Think about
all the electric wiring, gas pipes, chemicals in the building materials, etc. All kinds of
things could happen. It’s a good job we have safety standards. Our governments
make sure builders focus on safety. This is also true for the things we buy. You can
usually find a small logo on electrical products that say the product is safe, and then
there are instructions with safety guidelines. Food safety is also something lots of
people work on. It works. People rarely get ill because of the food we buy in shops.
Maybe it’s not such a dangerous world after all.
_____________1. It is somewhat we think more carefully about.

_____________2. Even at this place is full of danger. What is this?

_____________3. They set safety standards for the society.
