What’s a push me chair?
In this day and age, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is profoundly
affecting life around the globe. Resulting everyone in all walk of life are responsible
to stay at home to protect themselves. Eventually, everyone is more active to sit on
their chair and stare on the screen constantly either for work or playing games. Due
to this slowly people start to procrastinated and when its time to stand up they have
severe back pain for sitting way too long. Hence, we decided to invent a chair that
can push you out of your seat.

MACRO Trend (Ooi Sher Yin)

According to an article written by Visual Capitalist Macro trends refers to the long-
term directional shift that affects a large population, often on a global scale,

As of today, the covid 19 pandemic has successfully made its way as one of the
major trends that have affected us since its emergence. As of October 10,2020
more, then 7.7 million people had been tested positive for covid 19, and it continues
to rise till today, these shocking numbers has led to major changes in our everyday
routine. On February 18, 2021, officially marks the day that we have spent 1 year in
quarantine. As the amount of time spent indoors increases, the opposite happens for
the amount of physical activity we obtain. While it seems harmless enough, being
stationary for long periods of time has its side effects, risks for things such as
frequent body aches, weaker muscles, and more long-term side effects such as
diabetes, cardiovascular diseases increase drastically.

On the topic of health, since the emergence of internet and social media has taken a
toll on the average health condition of the general public, as it indirectly promotes a
sedentary lifestyle, it is not uncommon for people these days especially the younger
generation to spent countless hours on their phones on social media as an outlet for
entertainment. While it does seem harmless, sitting for long periods of time has it
effects, as it not only disturbs our physical health, but our mental health as well,
according to an article written by the University of Nairobi Research Archive, 28% of
frequent social media users have reported frequent psychological distress such as
anxiety and depression, that have been linked to the reduced physical activity
brought on by the emergence of the internet on 1983 and the popularization of the
internet on the early 2000s.

MICRO Trend (Lai Gin Ting)

A microtrend is a tendency in the direction of some phenomenon that is fairly

pervasive (penetrating) within a given sphere of influence and lasts for a few years.
(Ivy Wigmore, 2016)

The pandemic has triggered significant digital transformation for society. Everyday
our life and practices have been linked with social media, smart phone, tablet, and
Internet use. Digital technology has been thoroughly immersed with how we live and
learn. The pandemic is causing more people to work from home than ever before.
Work from home found new possibilities for employees to fit their work around their
personal life. Most schools keep up their pace with the recent developments in digital
technology for online learning purposes. The convenience of the new lifestyle habits
has brought a better relief for the safety during pandemic.

The world has dramatically changed during the past couple of months. However, it is
important to be aware that insufficient levels of physical activity can have a negative
impact on our daily condition. The outbreak can likely lead us toward unhealthy
behaviours such as spending more time on a chair or couch staring at a screen for a
long period. In order to maintain physical activity levels, people who had to sit for
long hours are advised to get up every 30 minutes or stretch legs if possible.

Key Drivers (Ngo Jie ern)

The growing aging population in this world loves to make excuses not to exercise
because they are too old for it. In the coming years, technological advances,
improved functionality of modern lift chairs, high adaptability of modern designs
among young people and increasing purchasing power are expected to impact the
global lift chair market demand.
In this 2021, we are born in this digital world, without technology our society has
come to a stop. For example, e-banking on the computer, business on the computer,
etc. Hence, this is why we are more focused on the digital world.
Nowadays in this pandemic, people often work at home and most of the time that we
spend is in front of the computer. The longer we spend our time sitting in front of the
computer the pain in our back and the butt area will feel uncomfortable.
Next, most of the entertainment is online nowadays and fewer people spend their
time doing outdoor activities. The main reason is they are too lazy to stand up from
the chair and they often give excuses for it. For example, the entertainment we often
browse are Netflix, YouTube, and etc.

Target Consumer (Yang Hui Xin)

In the future, lift chairs will become more common due to the sedentary lifestyle
cultivated by people.

Nowadays, this pandemic has especially encouraged people to stay at home, with
not much activities to do. In the long run, patellofemoral pain, which is knee pain
caused by the result of sitting for long periods of time, will become common among
the majority of the people. Fortunately, this lift chair can overcome this problem
efficiently. In other words, it also can be very useful for the majority of the people.

Current Products (Ng Shu Faye)

Current products like, a lifting armchair, are bulky and heavy, making it difficult to
move around. Similar products that promote ergonomic sitting can be a bit
uncomfortable and some designs are so complicated to the point that it makes it
difficult for one to stand up. Some other chairs are also more geared towards leisure-
sitting which does not help to remind us to stand up once in a while, and also makes
it easier to procrastinate. Lastly, the design also plays an important part in attracting
customers to buy a product that would look nice in the long run.

Trend affected by environment (Leong Zhi Lin)

The trend ongoing now is the on-life. Half of the world’s population will be online
starting from 2020, and this fact has consequences for our politics, mental health,
social cohesion and personal interactions. With this issue it may require new efforts
to step back and reassess the costs and benefits of this technology. The technology
should or may help people facing different problems such as health issues. The
trend going on is mostly from the pandemic issue that is affecting the environment
and people all over the world to have online classes, online shopping, work from
home and it is mentioned that people will be at home at all times when it is not
necessary to go out. Thus, the idea and point to design this product is to avoid the
bad side of the environment affecting most of the people but to help them.

Product idea (Ng Yan Lei)

As the pandemic continues, people have been staying at home, working on screen,
mostly without exercise. So, we have an idea of a chair that forces you to get up
from time to time. It works similar to a lift chair except this is specially designed for us
to not sit all day in front of the screen.
This chair comes with a timer which you can set for how long you want to stand up
for. Referencing existing items like hydraulic gas spring and double rock spin ride
from Everland, Korea, we were able to come up with these two lifting systems. The
chair that we design can lift up completely and creates a small bump in the end.

Although this chair can't help you exercise, it reminds you to get yourself up once in
a while.
With that said, It's comfy but it's also a little pushy!
