The Internet

Today, it is almost impossible imagining living in a world without internet. This complex,
revolutionary and ever changing invention of 1965, has significantly changed our world. The
internet is a global communications network consisting of thousands of networks typically
interconnected by fiber optic cabling. The internet is always transforming into new complex
hardware and software, in addition to the services it offers.
The internet has impacted and benefited our relationships & how we communicate with each
other, how we learn, how we shop, how we get news, how we are entertained ad how we
network to name a few.
 Communication – we can now share words, photos, videos, and voice messages in
seconds (including email and instant texting). It birthed iPhone!
 Learning – Education has become more affordable and comfortable. There are now
online lecturers, online libraries, and private lessons via Skype where we can acquire
knowledge. It birthed Google!
 Shopping – With vastly more variety, we can now buy just about any items or services
we want with a click of a button at our own convenience and get it delivered to our door.
It birthed Amazon!
 Sharing News – Now we get information about important events and changes all around
the world immediately which helps us to understand what’s happening and how we
should react.
 Entertainment – The internet is also fun. Now, we have access to millions of videos,
movies, TV series, books, and games that make life much more exciting. It birthed
Netflix!
 Networking – The internet brought forth social media and online platforms. This has
allowed us to share our needs to millions of people. It birthed Facebook!
The internet is one of the greatest innovations of society and obviously has and continues to
impact us significantly.

What social innovation has had the greatest impact on our society?

Thank you for your post. I agree with you that Social media sites like Facebook, Instagram,
Tick-Tok, Twitter and YouTube ha impacted our lives in significant ways – both for the good and
for the bad.

On a positive side, social media has allowed us to communicate and stay up to date with friends
and family instantaneously (faster and easier - in real time) as well as meet and interact with
different people from different cultures & background all around the world. It has also allowed
us to join and promote social caused and raise awareness of injustice, and discover sources of
valuable information and learning to name a few.

On a negative side, studies have shown that social media not only affects our sleep but has
caused addiction in some individuals. Additionally, unlimited use of social media causes stress,
bad moods, FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and negative mental health.

Nonetheless, while social media has negative impacts, the positives have definitely prevailed.

Thanks for sharing what in my opinion is one of the best innovations, GPS. The Global
Positioning Systems (GPS) has definitely impacted our lives in significant ways that most people
aren’t aware of. Frankly, it has revolutionized our lives - how we communicate and live. In
addition to the personal impact of GPS for you (Road Navigation), GPS has made our
environment a more safer and easier place to live. GPS is being used to help parents find and
keep track of their children and is being installed as a location device in cars and in cell phones
to assist people in mapping and directions.
Other great impacts of GPS are:
Used to improve military operations
Used to make marine navigation more effective
Used to monitor drivers of logistics companies when delivery packages
