and support your answer.

Answer:
GAMABA or NOT
Whang-Od Oggay is known to be a tattoo artist from Buscalan, Tinglayan, Kalinga,
Philippines. She is often described as the “last” and oldest “mambabatok” (traditional Kalinga
tattooist) and is part of the Butbut people of the larger Kalinga ethnic group.
I must say that Apo Whang-Od should be a recipient of GAMABA because she has been
tattooing head-hunters and women of the indigenous people of Butbut since she was 15 years old
and this makes her possess the mastery of tools and materials needed for the art she is good at.
Having mastery with the tools and materials needed for doing an art is one of the qualities a
candidate must have to become a Manlilikha ng Bayan. Though head-hunters are no longer exist,
Whang-Od is consistently producing works of superior quality over a significant period through
tattooing Buscalan tourists and this makes her possess the second qualification to be a Manlilikha
ng Bayan. Whang-Od is the only one left of her kind and she must be a recipient of GAMABA
because it will help her promote their culture’s traditional art. If she will become a recipient of
GAMABA, she will be having a one-step closer to promoting their traditional art to every
Filipino and when it happens, she may have the chance to teach it to everyone and to preserve
their traditional way of tattooing.
With these, their traditional way of tattooing will share to everyone and it might be saved
from oblivion. An artist like Apo Whang-Od must be recognized for they have been contributed
a lot to the moulding of the Filipino arts and the best way to recognize them is to make them part
of the Manlilikha ng Bayan.

Directions: Answer the following guide questions in an essay from.

1. If you were to nominate an artist to be a nominee for GAMABA, who would it be?
2. What are characteristics of the artist you want to nominate in GAMABA?
3. What field is his/her specialization in arts?
Answer:
If I were to nominate an artist to be a nominee for GAMABA, it would be still Apo Whang-
Od Oggay. Why? Because I see the best qualities a GAMABA artist must possess in her.
Whang-Od is the last living mambabatuk, upholding a tradition that has spanned centuries. If she
will be a part of Manlilika ng Bayan, the traditional way of tattooing of their culture can be
preserved. More than preserving their traditional way of tattooing, Apo Whang-Od is qualified to
be a Manlilikha ng Bayan because of the experience she have and her capability of introducing
and sharing her knowledge about their traditional way of tattooing.
Whang-Od is known to be a pro in tattooing head-hunters and warriors from her tribe and
she is doing this since she was 15 years old. With the experience she have, I must say that she
must be awarded as Manlilikha ng Bayan not just to recognize her because of her contribution to
the country but because of her passion in what she is doing. To be a Manlilikha ng Bayan is a
great privilege for an artist like Apo Whang-Od and nominating her is the least I can do for the
pride she is giving to the country. I agree to what Binay have said that bestowing Whang-Od the
GAMABA does not only recognize the beauty and grace of the ancient art of tattooing, but also
ensures that such Filipino heritage will survive and continue to exist.
In my opinion, one can be a GAMABA artist if he possesses the great knowledge about
his specialization in arts because a GAMABA artist must have the capability of sharing the right
way of doing the art he is good at. Of course, experience is also a must in order for someone to
become a part of GAMABA. With these experiences, one can become a professional about his
specialization which is very essential for a nominee to possess. For me, a nominee for
GAMABA does not need to be a famous one as long as he possesses the qualities a Manlilikha
ng Bayan has. The best characteristic a nominee must possess is he must morally, ethically, and
legally qualified to be a GAMABA artist. I believe all of these characteristics are possesses by
Apo Whang-Od Oggay that is why I am nominating her to be a GAMABA artist.

Directions: Identify the element used in the painting and describe how it used.
● An artist cannot produce a masterpiece without using any elements of arts. Basically
speaking, there are elements used to produce a certain artwork. If we look closer to the
painting, we can see that the artist used different kinds of lines in his painting. We can
see that there are lines used in the clothes of the mother and it is used to create a visual
effect as if the clothes of the woman are not ironed. Another element of arts used in the
art is the shape. There are various shapes in the art like the lamp behind the main subject.
These shapes were used to complement the beauty of the painting. Value is also used in
the painting. One of the evidences that it is used in the painting is the color of the skin of
the child and his mother. It is obvious that the color of the skin of the child is lighter than
the color of the skin of the woman. Since the skin color of the child is lighter, it has a
higher value than the skin color of the mother. Although we cannot touch the clothes of
the subject, we can conclude that it is soft because the artist makes use of the proper
texture for the clothes to feels like a soft one if we touch. This is the use of the texture as
an element of art. It makes the surface of the art appears to feel without having any actual
texture. Moreover, color is also used to make the art more beautiful. It suffices the
essence and beauty of the art. Summing up, elements of arts were used to produce arts
like the painting. Without having using these elements, the painting will not finish the
way the artist wants it to finish. The artist cannot portray what is in his mind through the
use of art. With the proper knowledge of elements of arts, we can be able to express
properly the ideas in our minds through arts.

Directions: identify the type of balance used in the artwork whether asymmetry, symmetry,
or radial and support your answer. 4 points each
1. Symmetrical – the type of balance used in this artwork is symmetrical. Specifically it is a
strict symmetry because there is a precisely the same distribution of elements on each
side when the middle of the artwork is split down.
2. Symmetrical – like the first artwork, the type of balance used in this artwork is also
symmetrical. The second artwork on the other hand is an approximate symmetry in a
sense that there is still an equal distribution of elements on each side when the middle of
the artwork is split down although the distribution is not really exact. Nevertheless the
artwork is still symmetrical.
3. Radial – the type of balance used in the third art is radial balance because there are equal
parts that radiate out from the center. In this art, there is a focal point where the parts
were radiated out from it that is why this art has a radial type of balance.
4. Asymmetrical – the fourth art has the asymmetrical type of balance because there is no
equal distribution of elements on each side when the middle of the artwork is split down.
We if we will look in to the two different sides of the artwork, there is no equal
distribution of elements. Example of this is the group of people in the artwork which is
not equally distributed in the artwork.\
5. Asymmetrical – like the fourth artwork, the type of balance used in the fifth artwork is
asymmetrical. It can be seen in the artwork that there are no equal distribution of
elements on each side of the artwork because the waves are stronger on the left side of
the artwork than the right side. Since this is case of the fifth artwork, it is an
asymmetrical artwork.

Directions: Answer the following guide questions briefly and concisely. 5 points each
1. The focal point of the first artwork is the sad emotion. The artist might want to emphasize
the sad emotion because that might be the feeling of the artist when he made the artwork.
The artist might be trying to imply that in hundreds of people who are happy, there is still
a person who is not feeling the same way the others are feeling. If we will just understand
the art, there is a hidden message behind it and that message can be concluded through
the focus of the art.
2. The second art’s focus is the green tomato. The artist might want to emphasize the green
tomato to show beauty in diversity. The artist might be trying to imply that one can be a
part of a different group, that there is unity behind a diverse group.
3. The plant is the focus of the third artwork. I think it is the focus because the artist might
want to convey a hidden message through the plant. The artist might want to imply that
there is life and hope behind negativities. The plant being the focus of the artwork
signifies hope and positivity which can really catch the attention of the viewers.

shapes to portray Winnie the Pooh. The fifth artwork looks like it is made out of cubes
and other geometrical shapes that is why the art movement used in this art is Cubism.
