Importance/Uses

of pH
In our daily lives.
What is pH?

• pH, also known as ‘power of Hydrogen is a

figure expressing the acidity of an aqueous
solution on a logarithmic scale on which 7 is
neutral. Lower values are more acidic and
higher values are more alkaline.

• Solutions having a higher Hydrogen ion
concentration will have be acidic and
solutions having a lower Hydrogen
concentration will be more basic.
• The ideal soil pH for farming is 6.5 to
7.0. If the soil is too acidic say below
6.5, bases can be added to the soil
to nullify the effect of the acid.
• The hydrochloric acid in our stomachs
have a pH of 1.5 to 3.5. During the
times of acidity, we usually take

• Some animals and plants contain
certain acids which serve the
purpose of self defence. The pH of a
bee sting is about 4.5 to 5.5.
Stinging nettles contain Formic acid
whose pH should probably be 2-3.
• The sugars of leftover food in our mouth dissolve because
of saliva secretions and the environment in our buffalo
cavity becomes acidic. If not taken care of by brushing,
these acids can corrode the enamel of our teeth and
cause tooth decay. Thus, to prevent this from happening,
we brush our teeth with toothpaste which is basic in
nature.
Role of pH in • When our muscles respire anaerobically due to low oxygen
supply, lactic acidosis is produced. This is the cause of
our daily lives. cramps .
• If a copper vessel is tarnished, lemon juice can be used to
bring back the shiny appearance. The tarnish on the
vessel is caused by the formation of a layer of basic
copper oxide. Since lemon juice contains citric acid, it
reacts with the copper oxide to form copper citrate and is
washed away. The vessel then regains its shining
appearance.

From farming to our

has a part to play.
