DONKEY KING

The Donkey King is a 2018 Pakistani computer animated comedy film directed by
Aziz Jindani. It is one of the big hit animated movie of Pakistan for all ages. The
movie made more than 20crore. There were many famous names that were
included in making of this animated movie and all of them did an amazing effort
in making it great for the viewers.

There were many astonishing and magnificent shots. The photographed shots
covered every scene in the movie. Long shots close up shots, medium shots. The
Photographer used High key lighting and Low key lighting in certain scenes to
make it more dramatic, some of the screenshots are as follows

SCREENSHOTS ON PHONE:
Medium shot Long shot close up shot

Back lighting Low key Lightning crane shot

The medium shot was taken in the king’s castle where Mangu the Donkey was
ordered to give the prince his clothes that he washed. On the door step he met
the assistant of the king which refused to let him in, as you can see this is a
medium shot because we cannot see the whole body of the person. There were
many long shots in the film on of the long shot I liked the most was in the Dancing
scene where Mangu won the elections and became the King. This is a long shot as
you can see Mangu from head to toe with a little bit of back ground. The close up
Shot is from the scene when Mangu woke up from a dream that he is about to
become a millionaire, it is a close up shot because it zoomed towards his face.
Coming to the lighting the village of Azad Nagar was shown in a very bright
manner the photographer used high key lighting and there were barely any
shadows. The back lighting is used in the picture as you can see the lighting
coming from the back side of the fox it made the back ground bright this shot is
basically taken when the fox decided to make Mangu the king of the jungle. The
other picture where the ring master is shown after capturing the animals in the
cage and was going to take them to the Circus, Low key lighting used because the
whole picture is dark and we couldn’t see his face more clearly because of the
shadows that covered his face and the background with it. There are no crane
shots in an animated movie but this is a seen if it happened in real life this would
be a crane shot, when the prince Salman came in his new Ferrari and drifted
around to the side the camera angle was high and it slowly moved it shows that it
is a crane shot.

For Mise-en-Scene I would like to take an image and explain it in a way that it
covers every part of Mise-en- scene.

Dominant: I think Miss Fitna in the picture is more dominant because the news
reporter next to her is wearing white clothes which is simply matching the
background the fox is wearing purple and black which is very unique to the other
objects in the picture and the fox is a little bit more nearer to the camera which
makes her relatively larger.

Lighting Key: High key lighting is used in the image, we can see the background is
brighter and the image is clear.

Shot and camera proxemics: This is a medium shot we can see the objects in the
image from head to waist up.

Angle: It is a eye level shot because we can see the clearest view of the objects
straight next to us.

Colour Value: I think white colour is more dominant in the photo because the
back ground is all white and the subsidiary person on the side is wearing whit
clothes.

Lens: I think Wide angle lens is used in this image.

Subsidiary contrast: The monkey to our right, few buildings in the background, a
big stone at the back of the fox are the secondary dominant objects I can see in
the picture.

DENSITY: The picture is very dense because we can clearly see the objects in the
pictures and none of them are blurred.

Composition: I think it is a vertical composition as we can see the fox standing

plus the tall building at the back makes it vertical.

Form: The shot is open and there is no necessary information in the shot.

Framing: The framing in this picture is loose because there is space between the
characters and on the sides so it is not tightly packed.

Depth of field: It is a Deep focus shot because it focuses on all the objects.

Character Placement: One character in the picture is a little bit to the right and
the other is a little bit to the left there is space in between.
Staging position: The characters in this photo are focused on each other and not
looking at the camera.

Character Proxemics: There is Personal distance between the characters.

The camera Movement in the movie was up to its peak, it basically showed the
whole Azad nagar in a single Frame from the dreams of Mangu to the throne of
the king the camera movement was great and attracted the viewers in an
extraordinary way here are some examples according to my perspective,

The first image in the movie was when Mangu was dreaming about his girlfriend
and this scene was linked to the titanic scene. The camera Movement starts from
the far end where it shows the whole picture of the ship and then it slowly comes
nearer to the view where Mangu was holding his girlfriend and the camera moves
slowly to the side. The second image showed the king as he entered the castle he
was slowly moving towards his throne the camera slowly moves backwards as the
king moved forward. The third image was when the king was giving a speech the
camera was moving towards the right and it showed the whole crowd that came
for the speech. The fourth image is from the Dream of Mangu when he was in a
show as the giraffe who was host, as he enters the place the camera came from
far end and zoomed towards the giraffe.

This animated movie is a computerized movie. There are various shots that have
been taken and every shot have different time limits, the editors have edited the
shot in a way that it emerges all the shot and shows the whole movie in one go.
The viewer’s watch the movie in one go but it takes hours long editing. There
were several editing styles used in the movie for example the dancing seen when
Mangu won the elections there the editors used many colours in the background
it made it bright and techniques used to make the scene cheerful. “Raja idol”
scene where all the candidates were giving there speech, several characters were
shown in one shot one after another so the editing technique in which one
character came and vanished it covered the whole scene. The music scenes when
Mangu was singing a song his voice suddenly changed they edited his voice in a
way that his voice got perfect and can sing to make the music better.

Each actor has executed the voiceovers extremely well, carrying appropriate
emotions required for the dialogues. The sounds we hear in this animated movie
we think that Mangu the donkey is speaking but in reality it is dubbed behind the
scenes. Ismail Tara, Hina Dilpazeer, Jan Rambo, Mani and many more were the
famous sounds used behind different characters. The back ground sounds in
certain situations changed. When the ring master was on the phone with the fox
we could hear spooky sounds in the background and when Mangu went to the
house where he saw all the animals that were locked in a cage there were
dangerous sounds. There are many sound tracks in certain scenes.

"Donkey Raja" , “Allah Meharban”. “Khotay Da Puttar", “Darna Nahi Larna

Ha” etc.

A
lthough the movie was animated but the Acting of every character in the movie
was remarkable. We can take example of Mangu he was shown as a funny
character he showed different emotions to different scenes in the movie. In the
beginning of the movie when he was dreaming about becoming a millionaire
there we could see he was happy as the tears of happiness were coming out of his
eyes. When Mangu became the king and he realized his responsibilities he
became serious and wanted to help the people. His Dance moves and action
scenes in the movie and his great personality made the movie much better to
watch.

The movie was more dramatic as it had many dramatic scenes. For example when
Mangu became the king and suddenly one by one animals started to disappear
and Mangu went to find him, he saw a house in the middle of nowhere and there
he saw every animal that disappeared and he realized that he made a big mistake
and rescued his side from the Truck. Another Dramatic scene was when Mangu
accidently ran into the Bulls ground where he had to face a big Bull, Mangu
defeated him and the crowd cheered for him.

The story starts with Mangu who used to wash clothes and lived with his uncle.
The king of Azad nagar was old and wanted someone else to become the king.
Fitna Begum his assistant advised the king to elect a new king by voting. Fitna
begum wanted Mangu to win the elections so that she can she can capture the
animals one by one and bring them to the circus by the orders of the Ring master.
Mangu won the elections by media propaganda. Mangu became a lazy person
when he became the king. Many Animals complained about their family members
gone missing. Mangu went to find the animals. He saw a house in the middle of
nowhere; he went inside and saw the missing animals including the previous king
trapped inside a cage. The king told Mangu the whole story in flashbacks, Mangu
got to know that he made a big mistake. Mangu went to tell his people about the
situation and no one believed in him, so he went to save the animals all by
himself. He followed the truck with animals trapped inside and gong towards the
circus. He saved them all with his heroic act and won the hearts of all the animals.
The writers of the movie were Sir Aziz Jindani, Kamran Khimani. The writing
script basically covered all parts of democracy in the story. In the times when King
controlled the whole reign they brought a new rule of democracy where every
animal has rights to vote for their truthful king. The script also covered the media
propaganda that how they choose the leader behind the scenes. The writing is
often tersely funny in the movie for example when Mangu accidently burned the
Prince clothes and when the prince saw the clothes burned he was completely
shocked and Mangu told him that it was a new design and went away with it.

The ideology in “Donkey King” movie was based on Mangu the protagonist he
used to dream big about money and girlfriends but his uncle used to tell him that
a donkey can never live a better life and you will die poor, but it was an opinion of
other people. Mangu believed in himself and became the king, after becoming the
king his goal was to have a better life for his people when no one believed in him
for example when he told other animals about the crime scene where there
family members were missing and no one believed in him but he saved every
other animal by himself.

The overall movie was great it had some up and downs. The film leaves no stone
unturned in taking a dig at the current state of democracy in Pakistan, the Covent
tactics used to elect the representatives and the manipulative role of media. The
movie was not to my expectation as I heard about it. Overacting was a bit to much
and the music scenes were just awkward and cringe otherwise they could have
made it a little better.
