Course Title Architectural Design-VIII

Course Code ARJ501

Programme Name Bachelor of Architecture

Tutor Shhilpi Sinha, Abhay Kaushik, Sakshi Kumar, Sandeep Singh

Student Learning Outcomes

The studio deals with the city level urban design/development to enable the students to relate to city
level design. It deals with designing and developing for an urban space and interrelation and scales. It
is focused around assessing city level issues, creation of public spaces, identifying movement patterns,
etc.

CO1: students should develop skills of drawing and representation

CO2: to assimilate learning of graphics, construction, structures and computers to apply to basic
design.
CO3: Explore creative processes and idea generation and demonstrate critical evaluation of these
processes in their projects.
CO4: Appraise how design can impact, interact with, and improve environments.
CO5: Understand spaces with three-dimensional visualization through the use of block models and
appropriate softwares.

Process

Studying a market area in groups. Analysing it for the urban design aspects. Identifying the key issues
of the area. Giving design proposals taking into consideration the main

Teaching Plan

Students would be expected to draw various maps reflecting the various elements of the urban
morphology. Bring out the character of the place and various issues of the place with the help of
various graphical representations, sketches, charts, etc.

Design Parameters

The urban study will bring out the key elements of the given area. The issues of the area will also be
brought out. The design proposals will be developed taking into considerations the same/as a
response to them.
Deliverables

Various Urban Design maps as listed below to be developed at relevant scale. Various data analysis
using graphical representations, sketches, graphs, charts, etc. Sections and elevations. 3-D
Representations

Evaluation and Assessment

The students will be assessed in groups for the urban design study part and individually based on their
performance in the urban design proposal.

Introduction:

The students will study, analyse and design the selected area/s in the city of Delhi. A thorough base
work study will be done, and a layered analysis of the area will be conducted using urban design study
tools. The study would encompass the physical, social, economic and environmental attributes of the
development of the built form, urban spaces amongst others.

The Studio will have two parts.

A. Urban Design Study (Documentation)

B. Urban Design Proposals ( Vision Statement/ Activity Program)

TASK A : Urban Design Study (Documentation)

Site/Surrounding Study/ Analysis

Before embarking on your design interventions you are expected to undertake a comprehensive
exercise of understanding your area of operation at four levels/ scales as under

 City Level
 Precinct Level
 Neighbourhood Level
 Site Level

Through direct observation, secondary sources and meetings with people, the task will involve an in-
depth study and analysis in terms of the following –

1. Physiographical Landform/ Terrain

Hydrology
Flora and Fauna

2. Morphological Built/ Unbuilt Pattern

Scale/ Size
Structure
Linkage/ Street Pattern
Plot/ Public Spaces

3. Perceptual Image/ Symbolism/ Identity

Sense of Place – Real/ Invented
Territoriality etc.

4. Socio Economic People & Space (Income/ Social Groups)

Public Realm
Safety/ Security/ Accessibility
Exclusion/ Segregation

5. Visual Formal Order/ Cacophony

Kinaesthetic Experience
Axis
City Edge Streetscape
Arcades/ Corridors
Urban Adjuncts
City Graphics
Landscape
Squares/ Plazas
Landmark Buildings
Steps/ Ramps
Decks/ Over Bridges/ Underpasses
Gateways

Expressways/ Crossings/ Roundabouts
Parking
Public Art

6. Functional Activities/ Land Use/ Building Use

- Pedestrian
- Vehicular (Public/ Private)
- Rail
- Metro etc
Services/ Infrastructure

- Sewage
- Storm Water
- Garbage
- Electrical
- Fire etc.
Environmental/ Climatic Study

7. Temporal Evolution (History, Timelines)

Continuity/ Change
Heritage Sites/ Conservation

8. Implementation Development
- Land (Ownership/ Management)
- Pressure/ Prospects
- Feasibility
- Actors (Developers/ Investors/ Builders/ Occupiers/
Users)
- Community
Controls
- Policy/ Regulations/ Codes (Master Plan, Zonal Plan,
Building By-Laws, Environmental Law. Heritage Law)

- Feasibility
- Actors (Developers/ Investors/ Builders/ Occupiers/
Users)
- Controlling Agencies/ Local Bodies
- Management of Controls

This study shall be subjected to rigorous analysis from which definite conclusions, (that have the
potential of becoming design determinants) shall be drawn.

TASK B: Urban Design Proposals (Vision Statement/ Activity Program)

After having understood your site/ surroundings from various points of view you would be expected
to propose a purposeful activities program and subsequently put together a vision statement for the
same,

Vision Statement

With the help of your conclusions from Site/ Surrounding Study including constraints and
opportunities and other inputs you are expected to put together ‘Your Vision’ for the site/ area of
operation by outlining your intent, tools and strategies that your propose to employ. Most important
you must indicate how your intervention can transform the site, precinct, and the city into a better
place both in tangible and intangible terms.

Activity Program

Taking a cue from your Site/ Surrounding conclusions at all four levels and your insight into the
workings of the cities from your earlier semester exercises, you shall attempt to understand the
functional needs (both built/ unbuilt) of your site/ area of operation as under:

Site Related

- Existing facilities on location to be retained (Built and open)

- Facilities proposed by Local citizens/ RWA’s/ Other organisations etc.
- Your personal projections based on your understanding of the situation at local, city,
regional or national levels.

Additional Uses (Residential/ Institutional/ Commercial/ Cultural/ Recreational etc)

- Existing facilities to be accommodated (Built and open)

- Proposals by various Civic/ Governmental/ NGO etc.
- Your personal future projections at site, neighbourhood, precinct and city levels.

The quantifiable part of the activity program shall be tabulated to include the following:

Area Calculations Built (Carpet/ Covered), Unbuilt (Open)

Occupancies Permanent/ Floating/ Event Related/ Seasonal
Parking Long/ Medium/ Short duration parking of buses, service vehicles, cars,
scooters, cycles etc.
Services Electric substations, Pump Rooms, Fire, HVAC related
Applicable bylaws Ground coverage/ Setbacks/ FAR/ Permissible links
