. VHF' AERTAL POLAR DIAGRAM TEST PROCEDURE ( GROUND)

1. Position a i r c r a f t Heading 000' on a s u i t a b l e s i t e c l e a r from


obstructions e t c . (An approved magnetic compass s i t e o r base
would be i d e a l ) .
2% Connect VHF 'signal generator a t 118.0 MHz t o VHF a e r i a l t o be
approved. Adjust s i g n a l generator output l e v e l t o give
s a t i s f a c t o r y reading on f i e l d s t r e n g t h meter a t some convenient
distance (say 50 yds) from t h e a e r i a l on t h e a i r c r a f t .

3.. Using t h e a e r i a l on t h e a i r c r a f t as t h e c e n t r e of a c i r c l e
walk a r o ~ n d ~ t hperimeter
e of t h e c i r c l e taking f i e l d s t r e n g t h
readings a t every lo0. Record t h e s e readings i n micro v o l t s
r' per meter,

4. *Repeat procedure a t 126.5 MHz and again a t 136.OM~z.

5. Convert t h r e e separate s e t s of f i e l d s t r e n g t h measurements t o


dB r e l a t i v e t o a mean l e v e l of OdB s e t a t t h e middle of each
range of readings. (20 loglO 2 = dB)

6. P l o t readings on t h r e e d i f f e r e n t s h e e t s of c i r c u l a r graph
paper. One sheet f o r 118.0 MHz, one f o r 126.5 MHz and t h e
other f o r 136.0 MHz. Each copy t o be l a b e l l e d with
A/c r e g i s t r a t i o n , frequency and a e r i a l p o s i t i o n and signed
by a responsible person e.g. Chief Radio Engineer, Chief
Radio Inspector e t c .

7- CAA Authorised p i l o t t o c a r r y out VHF a i r t e s t with s u i t a b l e


- ground s t a t i o n t o e s t a b l i s h maximum range a s per BCAR
