VHF FREQUENCY SEUCTION SYSTEMS

Originally, VHF commmications equipment was manufac tured w i th one

c r ~ r s t a per
l operating frequency, channel changing being accomplished
by selecting separate c r g s t d s i n the equipment.

Since t h a t time 90 channel, 100 channel and 180 channel equipments

have been produced. More recently 360 channel equipment with 50 KHz
spacing was standard and the l a t e s t equipments have 720 channel
capability with 25 KHz spacing between channels.

To enable correct operational frequency selection t o be made,

some form of sys tem i s used t o minimise the number of e l e c t r i c a l
connections between frequency controller and transmit ter-receiver
equipment.

Various frequency selec tion sys terns have been employed e g . .,two
oscillators, one with 18 crystals and the other o s c i l l a t o r with
20 crystals,combiningto give 1 8 x X) = 360 channel operation with
appropriate c r y s t a l s being selected by a 2 from 5 (or multiple 2
from 5 ) system. lbdern VHF equipments have tended to enploy the
Binary Coded Decimal (B.C.D) frequency selection system which i s
particularly suitable for use with modern integrated c i r c u i t
techniques,
