Activity 1
Smart Phone Microscope
Living organisms are made up of cells, and since cells are minute that our bare eyes cannot see
them, we need a powerful tool just to study them. Microscope is a laboratory apparatus that allows us
to see small things such as small animals, pollen grains, insects, plant cells, bacteria, and many more!
Microscope comes in many different use and magnification power, Compound microscope is the most
common, while dissecting microscope is used for magnifying small body part during dissection, and
Electron microscope the most powerful microscope is used to magnify minute particles including virus
and many more.
In this activity, we’re going to make our very own version of microscope which is portable and can
magnify different objects.
Materials
Laser pointer/ toy laser (Preferably laser which is 15-20 pesos)
Double-side tape
Smart phone with good camera
Specimens (Provided on the table below)
Clean bond paper
Flashlight (optional)
Procedure:
1. Extract the lens of the laser by twisting the black part from where the light comes out. Carefully poke
the black tube to get the lens. (Some laser’s lens are harder to extract ask for help.)
2. Cut at least 4 inches of double-sided tapes and twist it sideward to have a long strip of tape then coil
it on the side of the lens. (Do not put the tape on the curve of lens for it will block the image, also make
sure to clean the lens to make the image clearer.)
3. Place the lens exactly on the main camera on the back of your phone and open the camera app,
carefully place the camera near the specimen to fix the focus of your lens (and when I say close, it
should be real close!) You can open the flash of your camera if the light is to low or use other source of
light (like flashlight).
4. Take a picture of the specimens using 1x1 frame ratio.
