W04 Application Activity: Overcoming Obstacles

Name: SAMPLE

Overview
During weeks two and three you established your weekly study pace and identified some
health and wellness goals. Now what? A plan without action isn’t going to get you very far.
There will be obstacles that get in your way. This week you will identify some potential
obstacles to maintaining your study pace and wellness goals as well as possible solutions
for overcoming those obstacles.

Step 1 – Chart your obstacles

Use the template below to identify two obstacles that may hinder your weekly pace and
two obstacles that might hinder your health and overall wellness. Refer to your pacing
guide and health and wellness goals for ideas.

Step 2 – Chart your solutions

Write two things you can do to overcome each of the obstacles that you identified in the
template below.

Pacing Obstacles
1. Wednesday night activities with the youth make it hard to get my scheduled
assignments done that evening.
● Adjust my pace on Monday and Tuesday to accommodate my busy Wednesday
schedule.
● Wake-up an hour earlier and do my assignments before going to work in the
morning, freeing up my evening for other responsibilities.

2. Procrastinating is an obstacle for getting everything done for all of my classes.

● Use my pacing guide to help me stay focused and on task.
● Plan to do the most challenging tasks first in the week.

Health and Wellness Obstacles

3. Eating too much chocolate makes it hard for me to reach my physical goals.
● Eliminate temptation...Don’t keep chocolate in the house.
● Make it harder for myself to have chocolate… don’t buy chocolate at all, if I don’t
buy it then it can’t tempt me.

4. Waking up early to exercise before class is an obstacle for my fitness goals.

● Plan ahead… get to sleep 30 minutes earlier so I am not too tired to wake up and
exercise.
● Accountability… Find a friend to exercise with me to keep me accountable.

Step 3 - Reflect
Answer the following question in a short paragraph:

1. How will identifying your obstacles and a plan to overcome them contribute to your
academic success?

Identifying some of the obstacles related to how I handle my time and my health
really opened my eyes to things that get in the way of me accomplishing my goals. By
having identified potential plans to avoid these obstacles I am able to be proactive in my
reaching my goals rather than reactive. I am acting for myself. This will contribute to my
academic success because I am able to take control of how I am managing myself. For
example, using my pacing guide will help me to take control of my time and help me to
complete all of my assignments in a timely manner.
