Reflection

Managing Teams: If employees are happy working in the traditional boss-hierarchical


organization, why should a manager even consider changing to a team-based organization?
Managers should consider changing to a team based organization to help build a better
communication system with employees. In my work experience I often see that managers who
change to a team based organization are more successful then those who are not. Team based
organization help generate new ideas because you may have employees from different
backgrounds that can be essential to your success. Also not every employee are happy in a
traditional hierarchical organization because they may feel intimated and are not able to fully
communicate with their bosses. In my opinion those who are happy with a traditional boss
hierarchical fear a team based organization based on previous experience that did not go to
well.
Team based organizations can have its ups and down. You do not know how everyone will act
and whether or not if they will do their part in the project. However, managers must understand

that the work environment is changing very rapidly and becoming more diverse and "higher

most important for creative teams, such as those responsible for innovation which need fresh

perspectives"(Pentland 65). You are able to get more perspectives with a team based
organization and it is fundamentally important if you want your company to grow because those

who are in charge may have a narrow mind and need to be more open. I also think those who
are happy with a boss hierarchical lack face to face communication and is considered to be "the

most valuable form of communication"(Pentland 65) and with a team based organization you
have more face to face interactions.

I work in a a team based organization, but still have a boss-hierarchical aspects in my

department. In my findings team based organizations improve the relationships that employees

have with each other and my co-workers are able to help me when I need it instead of me
reporting to my boss. With team based organization you are able to have project leaders that
can help motivate employees better than a traditional boss hierarchical. Project leaders can be
more influential on employees because it can inspire and " deliver value to the organizations"

(Brown, Hyer & Ettenson 51). Team based organization helps create values to the

organizations. It is important for managers to understand that employees are likely to value the
company better if it is in a good team based organization.
