PCA-Human Resource Frame Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:

1. Describe the human resource frame

2. Apply the human resource frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

I am a part-time program instructor at the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) and am responsible for
implementing new and existing programs at the Club to earn or maintain grants. Additionally, I
support the full-time staff with creative efforts and create a safe and exciting environment for our
members. While the Boys and Girls Club is a national organization, clubs are separated into
districts, and each district has its CEO. The challenge with the Boys and Girls Club seems to be
its ability to retain employees who can consistently administer their mission enable all young
people, especially underprivileged youth, to reach their true potential. Organizations need to
assign leaders who keep the Boys and Girls Club core values at the foundation of each
decision because it guarantees the quality of services.

2) Describe how the human resources of the organization influenced the situation.

Unfortunately, as it is the case in many non-profit organizations, the employees have to

work with the resources they have available to deliver the mission of an organization. The
National organization has established goals and programs to help clubs be successful;
however whether individual branch leaders are delivering these goals is not measured
effectively. Therefore, there are leaders who do not invest in implementing structure and
employees get let down. The biggest challenge at BGC is that there are employees with
the skills and creativity to deliver the mission of the company; however, there is no
support. When employees try to express their ideas or concerns to upper management,
they become defensive and believe their competency is being questioned. When

employees are making an effort to communicate their needs and in return receive passive
aggression, they lose their power and passion for their role.

To reach its full potential, BGC leaders have to make an effort to create an environment
where employees feel comfortable enough to share their concerns, ideas, and needs. The
frustrating part, is building culture in an organization can be done through following
basic human resource strategies. The challenges come when it is time to invest in
employees. There are not enough opportunities to keep teaching employees and providing
them with the tools to be successful in their jobs. Additionally, employees are not
empowered by leadership to go beyond their job expectations which results in missed
opportunities for the club.

3) Recommend how you would use the human resources for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

I would use the human resources frame to focus on three key parts of the organization:
hiring, training, and development. I have mentioned before that the BGC more often hires
internally; however, this is not always the best solution to filling roles. A successful
human resources frame begins with leaders who are motivated to implement the
strategies. A passionate leader will look for alternative ways to connect with, train, and
empower their employees to truly deliver the organization’s mission.

The organization has national trainings that they require for employees to be cleared for
their jobs. However, computer training is not the best solution for accommodating all of
the learning styles in a team. Leaders must find methods of teaching teams that is
engaging and will ensure that the knowledge is being applied to their roles. The staff at
BGC ranges from 17-25 year olds and it is important for leaders to know how to motivate
their staff. This age group is demanding the freedom to be creative and non-profit
organizations have the advantage to encourage this. Through organizing one-on-ones and
developing clear plans for employees to be successful, their is a higher chance that
employees will see the value in their work.

Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

The Boys and Girls club already has the advantage of attracting people by fulfilling
people's needs to serve others or do good in the community. I turned to the Boys and
Girls Club after experiencing a job that put me under much emotional stress. However,
working for the organization has demonstrated how there is so much room for
improvement. Human Resources has a significant role in the effectiveness of the

organizational structure. By implementing a framework that motivates employees to be

effective at work.

I have learned that human resources are more than just managing conflict and
establishing rules in the workplace. Human resources is about creating an environment in
which people want to work and finding people who can deliver the organization's
mission. I am passionate about the organization's mission; therefore, I see the
opportunities to achieve the most success. If I had more influence in the human resource
frame of the organization, I would plan to change the organization's direction by defining
clear roles and meeting the needs of the employees to meet organizational goals.
