PCA-Choosing an Organization Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:

1. Identify an organization and situation you want to study over the remainder of the course.

2. Describe the organization and the situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Name and describe your organization.

I will focus on the Boys and Girls Club, a non-profit organization. While the Boys and

Girls Club is a national organization, clubs are separated into districts, and each district

has its CEO. I am affiliated with a more privileged club, meaning that many of our

members' families are also most of our generous donors. However, not all clubs have the

same privilege as this district; therefore, they must work three times as hard to collect the

funding to maintain staff wages and organize programs and opportunities for their

members.

2) Describe your role in the organization (it can be an internal or external role).

I am a part-time program instructor at the Boys and Girls Club. As a program instructor, I

implement new and existing programs at the Club to earn or maintain grants.

Additionally, I support the full-time staff with creative efforts and create a safe and

exciting environment for our members. Further, I will take on projects affiliated with the

leading clubs.

3) Describe the situation, including information you think the will help the reader
understand the most important elements of the situation. (This will require
selectivity: part of the art of case writing is separating the essential facts from the
mass of information that might be included).
My concern with the organization is the lack of priority for leadership in my district. Due

to the confidence in our donors, leaders within the organizations do not have many

expectations. Therefore, the district's potential for positive influence on youth is limited.

Beyond financial standing, the organization must encourage its internal leaders to meet

criteria specific to community impact to continue their role at the Boys and Girls Club. I

was recently assigned to a project for the teen side of the Club, and I was given two

weeks to plan a 4-week project. While I completed the task, my branch director gave me

no support, direction, or high expectations. When it was time to turn in the project, he

decided to provide his input on how I should've organized it. At this point, it was very

frustrating because when he had the opportunity to provide guidance, he didn't. The Boys

and Girls Club was founded on the belief of providing brighter futures for kids, and it

would be wrong for certain divisions to be excluded from that expectation because of the

financial advantage of their members. Organizations need to assign leaders who keep the

Boys and Girls Club core values at the foundation of each decision because it guarantees

the quality of services.
