1st Summative Test

Direction: Answer the following questions. Please write your answer on a separate sheet of paper(MDL).
For E-MDL, you may type in your answer on a separate word document and save it on pdf format.

1. Identify the most important types of interparticle forces present in the solids of each of the
substances.(1pt each)
a. BaSO4 -answer: is characterized by electrostatic attraction or ion-ion bonds (ionic)
b. H2S –answer: dipole-dipole forces
c. Xe –answer: London dispersion forces
d. C2H6 –answer: London dispersion forces
e. CsI –answer: ionic
f. P4 –answer: London dispersion forces
g. NH3-answer: hydrogen bonding & London dispersion forces

2. Predict which substance in each of the following pairs would have the greater intermolecular
forces. (1pt each)
a. CO2 or OCS –OCS will have the stronger intermolecular forces because it is a polar molecule thus it will
have dipole-dipole forces between molecule, while CO2 have only London dispersion forces between
molecules.
b. SeO2 or SO2 - SeO2 will have the stronger intermolecular forces because it is a larger molecule than SO2
and since the larger the molecule the less the energy it takes to generate a dipole moments
c. CH3CH2CH2NH2 or H2NCH2CH2NH2 - H2NCH2CH2NH2 will have the stronger intermolecular forces
because it has the ability to form double hydrogen bond with neighboring molecules.
d. CH3CH3 or H2CO - H2CO will have the stronger intermolecular forces because it is a polar molecule and
will have both dipole-dipole forces and London dispersion forces
e. CH3OH or H2CO- CH3OH will have the stronger intermolecular forces because hydrogen-bonding can
occur between neighboring molecules in CH3OH and only dipole-dipole forces is in H2CO

3. Consider the compounds Cl2, HCl, F2, NaF, and HF. Which compound has a boiling point closest to that
of argon? Explain (5points)
Argon is a small atom thus the atom/molecule that has the boiling point closest to argon must be small
and only have London dispersion forces. Hence:
Cl2 – London dispersion
HCl – dipole-dipole, and London dispersion forces
F2 – London dispersion forces
NaF –ionic
HF – H-bonding, dipole-dipole and London dispersion
F2 is smaller than Cl2, therefore it is closer in size to argon causing F2 to have the closest boiling point to
argon

4. Rationalize the difference in boiling points for each of the following pairs of substances: (2pts each)

a.) The more the spread out the molecule is the easier it is to align instantaneous dipole moments. Therefore, n-
pentane (it has a larger intermolecular forces) has a higher boiling point than neopentane
b.) HF is capable of H-bonding while HCl is not, therefore, HF has a higher boiling point than HCl.
c.) LiCl is an ionic compound, which is ionic bonds which are stronger than any type of intermolecular forces.
Therefore, LiCl has a higher boiling point than HCl
d.) The larger the molecule the larger the London forces, therefore, n-hexane has a larger boiling point than n-
pentane

5. Consider the following electrostatic potential diagrams: rank the following from lowest to highest
boiling point and explain your answer. (5pts)

Answer:
The lowest would be propane, followed by acetone and the highest boiling point would be
ethanol, this is because ethanol has hydrogen -bond forces, acetone has dipole -dipole forces and
propane has London dispersion forces and the strengths of these forces are r anked like
Ion-dipole interaction > Hydrogen bonding > Dipole-dipole interaction > London/Dispersion forces thus ethanol
has the highest boiling point.

6. In each of the following groups of substances, pick the one that has the given property. Justify your
answer. (1pt each)
a. Highest boiling point: HBr, Kr, or Cl2
The highest boiling point would be HBr since it has the greatest intermolecular forces which is dipole-
dipole and London dispersion forces
b. Highest freezing point: H2O, NaCl, or HF
The highest freezing point would be NaCl since it has the greatest intermolecular forces which is ionic
c. Lowest vapor pressure at 25°C: Cl2, Br2, or I2
The lowest vapor pressure would be I2 since it has the smaller molecule thus the smaller the London
dispersion forces than the other molecules
d. Lowest freezing point: N2, CO or CO2
The lowest freezing point would be N2 since it has the smaller molecule thus the smaller the London
dispersion forces than the other molecules
e. Lowest boiling point: CH4, CH3CH3, or CH3CH2CH3
The lowest boiling point would be CH4 since it has the smaller molecule thus the smaller the London
dispersion forces than the other molecules
f. Highest boiling point: HF, HCl or HBr
The highest boiling point would be HF since it has the largest intermolecular forces which is H-
bonding, dipole-dipole and London dispersion forces
g. Lowest vapor pressure at 25°C: CH3CH2CH3, CH3COCH3, CH3CH2CH2OH.
The lowest vapor pressure would be CH3CH2CH2OH since it has the largest intermolecular forces
which is H-bonding, dipole-dipole and London dispersion forces

7. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a syrupy liquid with a relatively low vapor pressure and a normal boiling
point of 152.2 °C. rationalize the differences of these physical properties from those of water. (5points)
Answer:
Hydrogen peroxide (HOOH), has more hydrogen bonding (which have two OH groups) than water
(which have only one O). with stronger hydrogen bonding, hydrogen peroxide has stronger
intermolecular forces and thus higher viscosity, a low vapor pressure and a higher boiling point than
that of water. Thus H2O2 has one hydrogen bond more than H2O.

8. Explain why water forms into beads on waxed car finish (3pts)
The reason why water forms into beads on waxed car finish is because water is a polar molecule while a
waxed car finish is non polar. Due to the fact that these two are unlike, the water-water forces (hydrogen
bonding) are stronger than the water-wax forces and the water beads up to the car’s surface

9. Consider separate 1.0L samples of He(g) and UF6, both at 1.00atm and containing the same number of
moles. What ratio of temperatures for the two samples would produce the same root mean square
velocity? (5points)
Answer:
VRMS= √3RT/M
√3RT1/M1 = √3RT2/M2
T(UF6) / M(He) = M(UF6) / M(He)
=(352.02 g/mol) / (4.003 g/mol)
=87.95
The ratio of temperature is 87.95. So in other words, temperature of helium sample must be 87.95 times
that of the uranium hexafluoride sample in order for them to have the same RMS speed.

10. BONUS. Explain why vaccines are important and why there are some afraid of having vaccines into
their body. You may cite some examples from news articles, research studies, testimonies, or blogs etc.
(5points).

Answer:

Some people are afraid of vaccines mainly because of mass hysteria in which it is a phenomenon that
transmits collective illusions of threats, whether real or imaginary, through a population and society as a
result of rumors and fear. This false information are not backed up with scientific results thus anti vaxxers
possess a threat to new born babies. This is because from birth, we are constantly exposed to many different
viruses, bacteria and other microbes. The body's immune system helps protect us against infections. When we are
exposed to infection, the immune system triggers a series of responses to neutralize the microbes and limit their
harmful effects. Vaccines are important because vaccines contain weakened or inactive parts of a particular organism
(antigen) that triggers an immune response within the body. Newer vaccines contain the blueprint for producing
antigens rather than the antigen itself. Basically if the body is exposed to a new type of virus, vaccines implants
antigens in our immune system to fight off those viruses. However just because one person has been vaccinated he/she
does not necessarily mean that she cannot be immune to the same type of virus that have been mutated.

Good Luck
