GENERAL CHEMISTRY 2
(SUMMATIVE TEST NO.1)

1.
A. BaSO4 – Ion-dipole
B. H2S- Dipole-dipole forces
C. Xe- London Dispersion Forces
D.C2H6- London Dispersion Forces
E. CsI- Ion-dipole
F. P4- London Dispersion forces
G.NH3- Hydrogen bond

2.
a. CO2 or OCS- OCS
b. SeO2 or SO2- SeO2
c. CH3CH2CH2NH2 or H2NCH2CH2NH2- H2NCH2CH2NH2
d. CH3CH3 or H2CO- H2CO
e. CH3OH or H2CO- CH3OH
3. F2 has a boiling point that is close to the boiling point of Argon.
Compare to F2, the molecule of Cl2 is larger so it also has larger
London dispersion forces. Meanwhile the three other
elements which are the NaF, HCl and Hf have a higher boiling
point compare to F2. It only means among the 5 compound, F2
has the lowest boiling point. So since Argon also has a low
boiling point, the closest compound is the F2.
4.

a. n-pentane has a higher boiling point than neopentane since

the molecular mass or the size of it is longer compared to
neopentane. So the larger or longer the size, the stronger
the intermolecular forces and the higher the boiling point.
b. HF has the higher boiling point since it contains hydrogen
bonding which is stronger than the intermolecular force of
HCl which is the dipole-dipole dispersion.
c. The compound that has a higher boiling point is the LiCl
since it is an ionic compound which is a strong force while
HCl is a dipole-dipole dispersion that has a weak
intermolecular force. So since the ionic compound is
stronger then its boiling point will be higher.
d. n-hexane has a higher boiling point since is molecular mass
is larger or longer than the n-pentane. So the larger the size,
the stronger the intermolecular force. So when it is stronger
then its boiling point is higher.

5. Propane, Acetone, Ethanol

- Acetone has a higher boiling point than Propane since the
intermolecular force of acetone is stronger than propane
which is the dipole-dipole force. While Ethanol has the
highest boiling point among the three because it has OH
structure that causes hydrogen bonding. So since hydrogen
bonding is stronger than dipole-dipole forces then its boiling
point is higher than two other compound.
6.
a. HBr has the highest boiling point compare to Kr and Cl2 since
its intermolecular force is dipole-dipole and London
dispersion forces and is stronger compare to the
intermolecular force of the two substance.
b. NaCl has the highest freezing point since it is an ionic
substance, which only mean its freezing point is higher
compare to the two compound.
c. The compound that has the lowest vapor pressure is the I2
since it has the largest molecular mass so its intermolecular
force which is the London dispersion is larger or stronger
compare to the two compound. So when the intermolecular
force is large or strong then its vapor pressure will be low.
d. N2 has the lowest freezing point since it has the smallest
molecular mass among the three and since it is small, its
intermolecular force which is the London Dispersion is also
small. So since its intermolecular force and molecular mass is
small then its freezing point will be low.
e. The compound that has a lowest boiling point is CH4 since
among the substances CH4 has the smallest molecular mass
and London dispersion forces. So the smaller the dispersion
force and the molecular size the lower the boiling point.
f. HF has the highest boiling point since its molecular mass is
large so its intermolecular force is also large and strong. So
the larger the molecular mass and the degree of dispersion
force the higher the boiling point.
g. CH3CH2CH2OH has the lowest vapor pressure since it has the
largest molecular mass and intermolecular forces among the
compound. So the higher the molecular mass and
intermolecular force then the lower the vapor pressure.
7. The structure of Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) produces a
greater hydrogen bond compare to water. So the
intermolecular force of hydrogen peroxide is stronger than
water. When the intermolecular force is stronger or larger
then boiling point is higher and the vapor pressure and
freezing point is lower. So for the hydrogen peroxide, its
boiling point is higher compare to water and its freezing point
and vapor pressure is lower compare to water.
8. A water beads was form on a finished wax car since wax is
composed of hydrocarbons that are hydrophobic or does not
interact with water. So a freshly waxed car has a low adhesive
surface with water that is why it form beads on the surface
due to cohesion and surface tension.
9. Given:

1.00 atm
Solution:
3RT
vrms= √ M
3RT1 3RT2
√M =√

3RT1 3RT
√ = √MUF2
MHe 6

T2

Therefore, the ratio of the temperature of the two sample is

0.114.
10. Vaccine is important for our body since it activates and
strengthen our immune system against a harmful virus or
disease. A vaccine also produces an antibody once a person is
vaccinated and these antibodies will fight the harmful virus or
disease inside us. It also weakens the virus or germs inside our
body. Due to vaccine many dangerous infectious diseases
were prevented and get under control by the people. There
are so many reasons why people are afraid to get vaccinated,
especially in our situation today. One of the reason why
people don’t want to avail vaccine is because of its side
effects. Another is because of rumors of getting a disease due
to vaccine and lastly people didn’t trust enough the vaccine.
