1. How does the talk relate to the materials we discuss in class?

(15 points)

All points that are explained in the video are directly and indirectly related to those points that

are discussed in the class. We have discussed about neuroscience and how different situations

affect our mind, how different products have impact on our mind. In the video the presenter have

also presented about the products that affect brain chemicals. She mentioned some situations in

which our brain cells show movement because we eat some food items, which contain such

chemicals, which affect our brain cells.

2. List two points that the presenter raised in his/her talk that I do not discuss in

my PowerPoint slide. One of the things you mention CANNOT be about the study

regarding the "You Love Your iPhone. Literally" conclusion, because you are going to be

discussing that for question 5 below.  (20 points)

First point that she raised in her speech is marketers use neuroscience to sell their products. It has

been proved that the picture of brain has special properties and it has been proved by scientist

that there is a brain chemical called serotonin can influence people decision. The serotonin can

be affected by increase or decrease in tryptophan level. Companies use tryptophan chemicals in

their products which affect serotonin chemical as a result it change users min, mood. Chocolate

has tryptophan in it that is why when any sad or depressed person eats chocolate they feel fresh

and happy.
Another point that presenter raised in her speech is about the study of Dr.Love who says that

there is a hormone in brain called oxytocin and when you boost people’s oxytocin it increases

their trust, empathy and cooperation. And he calls oxytocin as 'the moral molecule'. But presenter

raised a point that in some cases oxytocin can decrease cooperation. It can increase envy, it can

increase gloating. It can bias people to favor their own group. She said that oxytocin could not be

called 'the moral molecule' because it can be 'immoral molecule'.

3. What question would you ask the presenter? Why is your question important? (10

points)

I would ask the presenter that is there any science or technique or study which can diagnose if a

person is lying in love or not? I want to ask this question and I think my question is important

because we people are living in an era of production. Everyone is materialistic now. Some

people need love and some need money there is a war between love and money. People have

money but they are facing depression because of love. Therefore, from a neuroscience I want to

ask something that people need now.

4. If you were to briefly summarize the talk to a friend, what would you say? That is

what are the main points of the talk? (15 points)

If I am summarizing this whole speech to a friend, I would mention some important points from

this speech. Some points are first some scientists have concluded that cheese sandwiches and

chocolate helps us to take successful decisions. This is because some food products have

tryptophan in it, which affects serotonin chemical in brain. That is why after eating those

products people feel change in their mood. SECONDLY, she mentions marketers are using

neuroscience to sell their products. THIRDLY, she mentions flaws in NYTimes Op-ed article '

You Love Your iPhone. Literally.' that are in that article they concluded that they have noticed

activation in insula and insula is related to feelings of love and compassion. So these people love

iPhone but presenter raised a flaw that insula in also related to feeling of hate, anger, language,

memory. Therefore, from these facts it can also be said that those people hate iPhone.

FOURTHLY, she has mentioned the statement of Dr. Love that oxytocin can increase trust and

empathy. Therefore, that is why this hormone can be called as ' the moral molecule'. But

according to Molly Crocket, oxytocin can also decrease trust, empathy and cooperation so this

hormone can also be called 'the immoral molecule'.

5. Molly Crocket mentioned a flaw in the evidence that the writers of

the NYTimes Op-ed article: "You Love Your iPhone. Literally." used to support their

conclusion. What is the flaw? (15 points)

Molly Crocket talked about an unproved claim that you can use brain scans to read people's

thought and emotions. In the NYTimes Op-ed, article ' You Love Your iPhone. Literally.' they

gather 16 people in room and show them ringing videos of IPHONE. They note activation in

insula and conclude that insula activation in related to feeling of love and compassion. So theses

people love iPhone. Here Molly Crocket mentioned about a flaw that insula does a lot. It does

not only related to feeling of love and compassion. It is also includes other processes like

memory, language, attention, anger, disgust and pain. So based on these logic it can also be

concluded that those people may hate iPhone or they may have painfull memories with iPhone.

6. Why do you think people are susceptible to neurobunk? That is, why do people find

evidence based on neuroscience techniques especially persuasive? (15 points)

People are susceptible to neurobunk because Of some nonscientist who made statements about

neuroscience. As Molly Crocket has mentioned is her speech that our brain is so complicated

and broad that from a single cell scan it is impossible to diagnose mental illness. But there are

some clinics who made hundred dollars per year by using a radioactive tracer to locate mental

illness. But this is not proved yet that only single cell scan can diagnose mental illness but these

clinics in U.S are doing this and making hundred of dollars from it.
