Experimental investigations
For test on cohesive soils with improvement additives, a large frame direct shear test
apparatus (Geosynthetic-Soil-Interaction-Test-Device) been used, allowing for shear
tests, friction tests and pull-out tests on geosynthetic reinforced soils.

EBGEO is the German approach for "Recommendations
for Design and Analysis of Earth Structures using
Geosynthetics Reinforcements" by DGGT (Germany
Geotechnical Society). It covers reinforced earth
structures overpoint or linear bearing elements,
foundation systems using geotextile-encased columns,
bridging sub sidence and dynamic actions of
geosynthetic-reinforced systems (Ernst & Sohn Verlag
2011).

Life cycle assessment
environmental performance of an engineering construction - 8 impact category
indicators:
 Cumulative Energy Demand - CED (Primary Energy consumption, split into
non-renewable and renewable fractions) with non-renewable - fossil and nuclear -
renewable - hydro, solar, wind, geothermal and biomass.
 Climate Change (Global Warming Potential). The potential impact of the emission
of one kilogram of a greenhouse gas is compared to the potential impact of the
emission of one kilogram CO2-equivalents.
 Photochemical Ozone Formation ("summer smog").
 Particulate Formation (Particulate matter (PM) causes health problems as it
reaches the upper part of the airways and lungs when inhaled).
 Acidification (NOx, NH3 and SO2).
 Eutrophication (nutrient enrichment of the aquatic environment).
 Land competition. the land competition indicator includes the total, unweighted
sum of the area occupied.
 Water use (this indicator expresses the total amount of water used).
