Vocabulary with illustrations. Look for the words meanings and illustrate each of the
words. 30 points

1. Fertilization: fusion of gametes to form a new organism of the same species. In animals,
the process involves a sperm fusing with an ovum, which eventually leads to the
development of an embryo.

2. Fetus: A fetus is a baby before birth, which develops and grows inside the uterus. In
humans, the fetal period begins eight weeks after fertilization of an egg by a sperm and
ends at the time of birth.

3. Eggs: One of the two egg-shaped glands inside the scrotum that make sperm and male
hormones.

4. Embryo: An organism in the early stages of growth and

differentiation, from fertilization to the beginning of the third
month of pregnancy (in humans). After that point in time, an
embryo is called a fetus.
5. Epididymis:The epididymis carries sperm from the testes, which produce it, to the vas
deferens, a tube behind the bladder. The epididymis lays in coils around the back of a
man's testicle and can be nearly 20 feet long.

6. Estrogen: any of a group of steroid hormones which promote the development and
maintenance of female characteristics of the body. Such hormones are also produced
artificially for use in oral contraceptives or to treat menopausal and menstrual disorders.

7. Fallopian tubes: One of two long, slender tubes that connect the ovaries to the uterus.
Eggs pass from the ovaries, through the fallopian tubes, to the uterus.

8. Follicle: When an egg matures during a woman's menstrual cycle, the follicle breaks open
and releases the egg from the ovary for possible fertilization

9. Implantation: The act of setting in firmly. In embryology, implantation refers specifically

to the attachment of the fertilized egg to the uterine lining, which occurs approximately
6 or 7 days after conception
10. Menstruation: Menstruation, or period, is normal vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of
a woman's monthly cycle. The menstrual blood is partly blood and partly tissue from
inside the uterus. It passes out of the body through the vagin4.

11. Pen1s: a male erectile organ of copulation by which urine and semen are discharged from
the body and that develops from the same embryonic mass of tissue as the clitoris.

12. Placenta: The placenta is an organ that develops in your uterus during pregnancy. This
structure provides oxygen and nutrients to your growing baby and removes waste
products from your baby's blood. The placenta attaches to the wall of your uterus, and
your baby's umbilical cord arises from it.

13. Ovaries: The female gonad, one of a pair of reproductive glands in women. The ovaries
are located in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus.
14. Ovulation: The release of an egg from an ovary during the menstrual cycle.

15. Semen: a viscid whitish fluid of the male reproductive tract consisting of spermatozoa
suspended in secretions of accessory gland

16. Sperm: A sperm is the male "gamete" or sex cell. It combines with the female "gamete,"
called an ovum, to form a zygote. The formation process is called "fertilization."

17. Testosterone: is a sex hormone that plays important roles in the body. In men, it's thought
to regulate sex drive (libido), bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass and strength, and
the production of red blood cells and sperm.
18. Testes: a typically paired male reproductive gland that produces sperm and secretes
testosterone and that in most mammals is contained within the scrotum at sexual maturity

19. Uterus: The hollow, pear-shaped organ in a woman's pelvis. The uterus is where a fetus
(unborn baby) develops and grows. Also called womb.

20. Vagin4: When people talk about the vagina, they’re usually referring to the vulva, which
is the outer part of the female genitalia.

21. Umbilical cord: The umbilical cord is a tube that connects you to your baby during
pregnancy. It has three blood vessels: one vein that carries food and oxygen from the
placenta to your baby and two arteries that carry waste from your baby back to the
placenta.
22. Zygote: fertilized egg cell that results from the union of a female gamete (egg, or ovum)
with a male gamete (sperm).
