Dimensions of Holistic Health

In order to be considered holistically healthy, you should regard the following aspects of your well-
being.
A. Physical Wellness
It is the most apparent aspect of one's well-being, often referred to by the word "healthy." It refers
to how well your body is able to carry out daily activities without becoming too tired or fatigued. It also
means you have sufficient energy 6to enjoy activities and to meet unexpected emergencies.
Physical wellness results from developing health habits, such as maintaining balanced diet, getting
the right amount of sleep, taking the time to exercise; avoiding certain habits, such as drinking alcoholic
beverages, smoking, and taking dangerous drugs and harmful substances
. B. Mental Wellness
This dimension of holistic health pertains to being a life-long learner by continuously wanting to learn
new things and ideas. It is referred to by others as intellectual wellness since they still study and learn even if
they have already graduated from school and acquired their degrees. Mentally healthy individuals are open to
new ideas and experiences that can improve them, their family, and their community life.
Some activities that can enhance mental wellness are reading books and other informative materials,
attending symposiums, visiting museums and historical sites, watching worthwhile films and television
programs, completing puzzles and other brain teasers, and other interesting mental activities that will help
develop a healthy and young mind.
It is a reality that whatever affects the mind affects the rest of the body as well. One's bodily functions
are perpetually related to how healthy his or her mind is
C. Emotional Wellness
Apart from the academic measures of intelligence, you also need to develop the skills and abilities
that can help you become more aware of your emotions.
Emotional wellness involves your capacity to deal with stressful situations and manage emotions. It pertains to
understanding and liking yourself as wel as accepting and learning from your mistakes. This is also related to how you
maintain a healthy self-esteem and self-image. It refers to how well you meet the demands of daily life and how you
adjust to new situations. It also means expressing your happiness, love, joy, and hope, as well as your sadness, anger
stress, and fear in healthful productive ways.
6
The key to developing emotional wellness is learning how to balance your emotions. The point of
emotional management is not to eliminate all of your negative emotions. When you have no negative
emotions, imagine how uninteresting and unbalanced life would be. Acknowledging your experiences of
anger, sadness, and fear helps you manage these emotions better. Your negative emotions, in fact, are not so
negative at all. Your negative emotions serve a purpose in your life. People who take care of their emotional
wellness make sure that they can cope with the stresses of their daily life. You can best practice emotional
wellness when you
1. Face life's problems squarely;
2. Handle stress, and seek help from someone you can talk to and with whom you can share your
feelings if needed; and
3. Express your emotions in positive ways.
D. Moral-Spiritual Wellness
Another component of one's well-being is moral-spiritual wellness. This dimension is an important
contribution to good health. Moral-spiritual wellness brings harmony, focus, direction, and balance to
one's life.
Moral-spiritual wellness involves deep feelings and beliefs, including one's sense of purpose,
connection to others, and understanding of the meaning of life.
As a rule, you must always be faithful to your spiritual beliefs in everything that you do. This principle of
spirituality drives you to have a sense of purpose and meaning in life. By practicing acts of spirituality, you are
able to proclaim your deep commitment and love which eventually allow you to find inner harmony and peace.
You will gain respect and trust from others if you demonstrate good character. Moral-spiritual health,
together with the other dimensions, will help you attain holistic health.
Practice the following in order that you may be morally and spiritually healthy.
1. Always tell the truth.
2. Show respect.
3. Seek guidance from parents, teachers, and other responsible adults who can help you in making
difficult choices.
4. Act according to a set of high ethical principles.
E. Social Wellness
This dimension of holistic health refers to how well you get along with other people. It involves your
ability to interact with others and form strong and lasting relationships with them. To achieve social wellness,
make sure that you have positive relationships with your family, friends, classmates, and the people in your
community as well. Be able to strengthen the bonds and deepen your connection with the people whom you
care about. Establish a stable social network in your life by spending some quality time with your family
members and friends.
