INDUSTRIAL SERVICES PROCEDURE
RADIOGRAPHIC FILM INTERPRETATION
Approved: D.Daud

1.0 SCOPE :
1.1 The purpose of this procedure is to establish the method of carrying out
interpretation of radiographs to be used by SGS personal holding the appropriate
valid certification.
1.2 The scope is confined to the interpretation of industrial radiographic images
produced using either x-ray or gamma radiation.
1.3 This procedure shall be read in conjunction with the applicable inspection code and
acceptance criteria relevant to the radiographic images being interpreted.

2.0 METHOD

2.1 Interpretation is carried out of films that have been radiographed in accordance
with SGS radiography procedures. All films must be accompanied by a draft report
or worksheet that fully details all the conditions of the radiographic test.
2.2 Radiographic viewers shall be calibrated in accordance with SGS calibration
densitometers.
2.3 Viewing room shall be darkened to a maximum light intensity level of 50lux.
2.4 Prior to starting the interpretation of films, at least 30seconds shall be allowed for
the eyes to become accustomed to the lighting conditions.
2.5 The maximum period of continuous film viewing shall be limited to 30 minutes.a
break of at least 10minutes shall be taken every 30 minutes to prevent eyestrain
and ensure accurate interpretation results.looking directly into the “naked”viewing
screen must be avoided .adequate”masking”of the radiographic image under
interpretation shall be used to avoid excessive glare from the viewing screen.
2.6 Reporting of radiographic results shall be on the sgs “radiographic report “ form,
sgs alternative form may be used provided they contain the minimum information
require by the application code for trace ability of the test method used in the
production of the radiograph.

3.0 REPORTING
3.1 The interpreter should verify with the radiographers any inconsistencies found with
either the files or information supplied. Care shall be taken if interpreting films

interpreter )shall provide the following dtails for the interpreter to complete the
report. Reporting of results shall be in accordance with the applicable code and
shall includes as a minimum the following.
(I) Weld identification; weld joint type, material type and thickness.
(II) Assessment / acceptance criteria.
(III) Radiation type and strength.
(IV) Radiation focal size, Exposure détails (SFD), Radiographic technique
(DWSI etc.)
(V) Type and thickness of any intensifying screens used.
(VI) Film processing details (brand name and time if not standard).
(VII) Location and type of image quality indicator used.
(VIII) Weld area under assessment including datum reference point.
The interpreter shall add and complete the following to the report
(I) Weld metal density range over the area of interest ( at least two reading
shall be taken and reported).
(II) Radiographic image quality sensitivity.
(III) Reference to any film artifacts that may interface with interpretation. these
shall be reported as a test restriction.
(IV) Location, type and dimensions of weld imperfections or defects shall be
referenced to the weld datum point.
(V) Results shall be reported as either COMPLYING or NOT COMPLYING with
the stated acceptance criteria.
(VI) Reports shall indicate the name, signature and qualifications of the person
