CHAPTER 11

LEARNING ACTIVITY 11.1

List down 3 major issues/problems which cause conflict and affect the peaceful
situation of the country.
1. War
2. Corrupt Officials
3. The fight for our territory (West Philippine Sea).
ESSAY: Discuss and write your ideas on.
1. What are the human rights that need to be protected in our community and
society?
According to the preamble of the Philippines, humanity are granted with truth,
justice, freedom, love equality and peace. We are being endowed with rights from
Almighty God who have been the source of all things in this planet. Every person has
these rights simply because they are human beings. They are guaranteed to everyone
without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or
other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status. Human rights are
essential to the full development of individuals and communities.
2. What responsibilities do we have as citizens help assure that the rights of
others are protected?
A person’s ability to enjoy their human rights depends on other people respecting
those rights. This means that human rights involve responsibility and duties towards
other people and the community.
Individuals have a responsibility to ensure that they exercise their rights with
consideration for the rights of others. For example, when someone uses their right to
freedom of speech, they should do so without interfering with someone else’s right to
privacy.
Governments have a particular responsibility to ensure that people are able to enjoy
their rights. They are required to establish and maintain laws and services that enable
people to enjoy a life in which their rights are respected and protected.
For example, the right to education says that everyone is entitled to a good education.
This means that governments have an obligation to provide good quality education
facilities and services to their people.
Whether or not governments actually do this, it is generally accepted that this is the
government's responsibility and people can call them to account if they fail to respect or
protect their basic human rights.

3. What do you think are the greatest needs for service in your community?
For me, the greatest need for service in our community is the need of people to
respect the lives of other. In our community a lot of people love to gossip and spread

wrong information. This commonly leads to judgement from other people. This action
scarred the lives of others and often results to conflict affecting the peaceful rest of
other people. There are some instances cases of theft are recorded, people started
to worry and panic, their properties are destructed and some thieves attempts to
target young girls.
4. What could you personally do to contribute in addressing those needs?
The possible contribution to address those need would probably stop on
romanticizing the spread of rumors without validation. There are a lot of people
who only talks to me to gossip, however, I believe that mouths can lie but action
do not. Judgements from other people could affect someone’s life, enable to
avoid that, I could reprimand that person and ask for validation or confirmation.
Even though it is true, I would not indulge myself to intervene in their lives as it is
the best way to attain peace. In theft I could possibly secure our homes and
properties and to file blotter to the Barangay or police. In that way the local
officials could take some action, and further implement certain rules to avoid
further victims of that crime.
5. How do you achieve peace?
I achieve peace by doing service, and have a harmonious relationship towards
other people. It is stated in the book but I have my reasons and I can prove that this
is indeed factual. I, myself has a service in our church, serving youth and God in the
guidance of Saint John Bosco. In this organization, all youths are accepted whether
what your gender is as long as you want to prosper your purpose in life. From our
open forums, we could understand the pain of the others and let them feel accepted
in our group. Which is satisfying and at the same time create happiness in me as I
enlightened by their feelings. Another is creating a harmonious relationship with
other people. Harmonious in a way that I set boundaries and privacy to other people.
I often not interfere to gossips and rumors. I just say let them live their own lives.
However I also weigh in the circumstances in which I should take an action or time
to intervene especially if violence is present. Aside from that, if I created mistake and
the person around me yell at me, I would just stay calm and hear out what he/she
says and apologize.

REFLECTION
In the year 1972, former president Ferdinand Marcos implemented Martial Law in
the Philippines. The Filipinos are deprived to their freedoms as the dictator
commends scar in the Philippine Democracy. After the declaration and imposition of
Martial Law, Filipinos fight and revolutionized to secure the Philippine independence
from losing in our hands.
People when being oppressed by their rights tend to rebel in order to freed
themselves from the grip of the oppressor. This commends to the procurement of
eliminating peace. Peace, seen as concord, or harmony and tranquility. It is viewed
as peace of mind or serenity. It is defined as a state of law or civil government, a
state of justice or goodness, a balance or equilibrium of Powers. This means
acceptance and understanding the things around you. Peace promotes security, free
from violence and harm and also conflict to the neighbourhood.
In what I have learned about peace education is that, peace starts within oneself.
It is often correlated to peace of mind, acceptance to oneself, and acquiring of good
values. The capacity of a person to understand and weigh the situation, control
his/her emotion prevents chaos within the community. Enable to obtain peace, the
firm foundation of our identity should be taken care of. True self was established with
the help and guidance of the family. The identity of the family is important to have
decisive stand in their beliefs and aspirations. Family is the core influence for
establishing good values to children. A good manifestation of values defines being a
good citizen that would promote the basic rights that they experience in their
homes.Every human being was granted by truth, justice, freedom, love, equality and
peace which is given by Almighty God enable to maintain happiness and prosperity
in our lives. These gifts are fundamental enable for us to build good relationship with
one another. However in every rights there is an equivalent responsibility to be done.
I remember when I was in in my Junior High School year, one or my classmate
question responsibility as a twin of the rights. Her ideology do not have a point at all
it is because she wanted to eliminate the fact that we, students have to obey the
rules that the school implemented as a pay for the privilege that we have received. I
think having peace education would remove the mentality of most Filipinos to
receive privileges without complying with responsibilities. Filipinos should be aware
about the importance of knowing their rights and responsibilities enable to
complement your actions to the rules of God and man. This would guide us to set
our actions into limitations. People should learn that not all things would be at their
own will because rights would not be sustained without responsibility. It is evident
when paying taxes, when people obey rules, when Filipinos do community service,
participate election and serve military. There is something that would sustain our
needs, and our safety against threats. I realized that we should sacrifice for the
common good of all. Aside these reasons, peace education would enlighten the
minds of people to be aware of the laws that would protect us from oppressors and

learn to fight whenever we are being caged. Activists present reforms for the
government due to the evident allegations that most government officials are doing
in their position. Given as an example knowing your rights can make a change in our
nation. Knowledge could make individual differentiate the good governance from not.
This could make us to hold the power democracy at our hand and safe guard our
liberty against tyrant leaders and oppressors.
