MATHEMATICS Gr.8│Module 13
This Module was designed in response to the “new normal” school year, resilience must be built into our
educational systems to ensure that knowledge and skills remain a priority for all students. This Module contains
the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) an innovative response to the present situation of our
educational system. With the distance education or learning, the school hope for a continuous learning for the
students who may not be physically present at school. This is also to ensure the safety and health of the students.
MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCIES (MELC):
The learner:
A. illustrates theorems on triangle inequalities (Exterior Angle Inequality Theorem, Triangle Inequality
Theorem, Hinge Theorem);
B. applies theorems on triangle inequalities;
C. proves inequalities in a triangle; and
D. proves properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal.

LESSON 1: HINGE THEOREM AND ITS CONVERSE
Hinge - a movable joint or mechanism on which a door, gate, or lid swings as it opens and closes or which
connects linked objects.
HINGE THEOREM
▰ If two sides of one triangle are congruent to two sides of another triangle, but the included angle of the
first triangle is greater than the included angle of the second, then the third side of the first triangle is
longer than the third side of the second.
Examples:
AB = DE
BC = EF
∠E = 82˚ > ∠B = 63˚
DF > AC
AC = BC
CR = CR
∠BCR = 32˚> ∠ACR = 18˚

EXTERIOR ANGLES
- These are angles that are located outside the boundary lines.
Examples: ∠1, ∠8, ∠4, and ∠5

ALTERNATE INTERIOR ANGLES
- These are interior angles that do not belong on the same side of the transversal.
Examples: ∠2 and ∠6, ∠7 and ∠3
CORRESPONDING ANGLES
- These are pairs of non-adjacent angles in which one is interior and one is exterior and corresponds to
each other
Examples: ∠1 and ∠3 ∠2 and ∠4
∠8 and ∠6 ∠7 and ∠5
