EXERCISE NO. 1
FUNDAMENTALS OF FLUID FLOW

1. Air is moving through a square 0.50-m by 0.50-m duct at 180 m 3/min. What is the
mean velocity of the air?

2. The piston of a hypodermic apparatus shown in Figure 5-8 is being withdrawn at 6

min/ sec; air leaks around the piston at 20 mm 3/sec. What is the average speed of
blood flow in the needle?
3. The water tank in Figure 5-9 is being filled through section 1 at 6m/s and through
section 3 at 15L/s. If water level h is constant, determine the exit velocity v2.

Figure 5-9

4. If the water level in Problem 5-32 varies and v2= 10 m/s , find the rate of change
dh/dt.
5. Fluid having sp.gr. 0.88 enters the cylindrical arrangement shown to Figure 5 -10 at
section A, at 0.16 N/s. The 80-mm- diameter plates are 3mm apart. Assuming steady
flow, determine the average velocity at section A and at section B. Assume radial flow
at B.

Figure 5-10

6. If a jet is inclined upward 30° from the horizontal, what must be its velocity to reach
over a 3-m wall at a horizontal distance of 18m, neglecting friction?
7. Neglecting air resistance, determine the height a vertical jet of water will rise if
projected with velocity of 21 m/s?]

8. High velocity water flows up an inclined plane, as shown in figure 5-11. What are the
two possible depth of flow at section 2? Neglect all losses.
