SECOND ORDER KINETICS (POTASSIUM PERSULPHATE) LA

Aim: To investigate the reaction between potassium persulphate & potassium iodide and calculate the rate
constant.
Apparatus: Reagent Bottles, Measuring cylinder, Burette, Pipette, Conical flask
Chemicals: 0.05N K,SO, 0.05N KI, 0.002N NazS,0,
Reactions: K,S,0, +2KI = 2K,SO, +1

2Na,S,0, +12 > Na,S,0, +2Nal

Procedure: Perform two series of the experiments as follows:

Series 1: Mix a=b, 50ml K2S20s (A) + 50ml KI (B)
Series 2:
Mixa# b, 50 ml KS,0s (A)+25ml KI (B) + 25ml Distilled water.
Take 50ml KS,0, in a bottle "A" & 50ml KI in Bottle "B. Keep both of them in a water bath. When
both of them have attained constant temperature (temperature of thermostat ie. after 10 minutes) pour the
contents of botles "B" in to that of start. Withdraw 5ml of the reaction mixture, deliver it in a fiask containing
20gm of crushed ice to arrest the reaction. Then titrate immediately the liberated iodine against 0.002N
NayS0 using 1 ml of starch solution as an indicator towards the end point. (Shake the reaction mixture
periodically). Similarly perform the second series. Record the readings as follows:

Calculations:
Calculate a &b in terms of 0.002 N Na2S20s
Draw the graph of Vst for the first series. Find out the slope and calculate K
(a-x)
In the case oftwo reactants with uniequal concentration a plot of log

Conclusions:
1) Theconstant values of K obtained using equation for the second order, indicates the reaction
between KS20, & KlI to be of the second order.
2) The graph of Vst is a straight line therefore the reaction is of the second order.
