Topic Title : Critique paper and its purpose

A critique paper is also known as a response paper. It is a formal evaluation of a journal article or
another type of literary or scientific content. your main goal is to show whether or not the author
provided reasonable arguments and facts for their min points.
Writing a critique on a work helps us to develop: knowledge of the works subject area or related
works. An understanding of the works purpose, intended audience, development of argument, structure
of evidence or creating style. a recognition of the strengths and weaknesses of the work.
The purpose for writing a critique is to evaluate somebody’s work ( a book, an essay, a movie, a
painting… ) in order to increase the reader’s understanding of it. A critical analysis is subjective writing
because it expresses the writer’s opinion or evaluation of a text.
The three principles of review and critique writing are:
1. Be concise. Do not ramble nor veer ( to change the subject matter) off the subject.
2. Be honest and fair. State your opinion(s) about the subject, both positive and negative.
3. Give examples and back your critique up. Don’t just say something like ‘Restaurant X is
horrible’.
Purposes of critique writing for an article, book and manuscript review are the following:

1. To demonstrate your skills for close reading and analysis

2. To show that you understand key concepts in your field
3. To learn how to review a manuscript for your future professional work
4. To Describe the book’s content
5. To summarize the book’s strength and weaknesses
6. To provide a reliable recommendation
7. To provide the editor with an evaluation of the manuscript
8. To recommend the authors with constructive feedback and reasonable suggestions for
revision

In writing a text include a few opening sentences that announce the author( s) and the title, and
briefly explain the topic of the text. Present the aim of the text and summarise the main finding or key
argument. Conclude the introduction with a brief statement of your evaluation of the text.

Sample review text

Within educational research, much attention has been given to the importance of diversity and
equity, and the literature is rife with studies detailing the best ways to create environments that are
supportive of diverse students .In “ Guidance Matters.” however, Carpenter and Diem ( 2015 examined
these concepts in a less-studied source: policy documents related to leadership training. Using
disclosure analysis, they explored the ways in which government policies concerning the training of
educational administrators discussed issues of diversity and equity. While their innovative methods
allowed them to reveal the ways in which current policy promotes superficial platitudes to diversity
rather than a deep commitment to promoting social justice, their data analysis left many of their
identified themes vague and their discussion did not provide a clear explanation of the applications of
their findings.

To Critique a piece of writing is to do the following:

1. Describe: give the reader a sense of the writers overall purpose and intent.
2. Analyse: examine how the structure and language of the text convey its meaning.
3. Interpret: state the significance or importance of each part of the text.

UNDERSTAND
Topic Title : Ways of writing a critique paper

The best way to explain the how to write a critique today is to provide a critique definition.

A critique is really nothing more than a critical analysis and the word “ analysis” does not have a
negative meaning. “ To analyse “ just means to understand something better and that is all you are
doing when you write a critical essay, trying to understand it and present an evaluation.

A critique is a genre of academic writing that briefly summaries and critically evaluates a work or
concept. Critiques can be used to carefully analyse a variety of works.

Before you will start writing , it is important to have a thorough understanding of the work that will
be critiqued.

1.Study the work under discussion

2.Make notes on key parts of the work
3.Develop understanding of the main argument or purpose being expressed in the work
4. Consider how the work relates to a broader issue or context.

In writing a critique paper we should consider the name of work being reviewed. Describe the main
argument or purpose. Explain the context in which the work was created. Have a concluding sentence
that signposts on what your evaluation of the work will be.

Introduce your reader

to the title of the
article, the authors,
and the main point of
the article.
