Solving routine and non-routine problems Involving Volume of a Rectangular Prism in Real Life

Situations Using Appropriate Strategies and Tools

Learning Competency: Solves routine and non-routine problems involving volume of a

rectangular prism in real life situations using appropriate strategies and tools (M5ME-IVe-83,

INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

In this lesson, we will study and learn about solving routine and non-routine problems

involving volumes of rectangular prism in real- life situations using appropriate strategies and

tools. A Rectangular Prism looks like a box and has a 3-dimensional (3D) shape.

FINDING THE VOLUME OF A RECTANGULAR PRISM

You can find the volume of a prism by counting unite cubes.

Example: the volume of this prism is 20 cubic centimeters (cm).

There are two layers with 10 cubes in each layer. The volume is 20 cubic centimeter or 20

cm3

Let us have a drill on multiplication of whole numbers. Find the product of the following set of

numbers. Write your answer inside the box.

1. 3 x3x3 = 4. 5x6x7=

2. 2x4x6= 5. 2x4x5=

3. 3x3x4=

In our previous lessons we solve mathematical problems, let us try this one…

The Puyat Steel Corporation in Masaya, Rosario,

Batangas donated boxes of canned goods to the

typhoon victims. The boxes were placed in a

container van. There are 6 layers of 5 boxes in each

4 rows. How many boxes are there in all? What is

the volume of the container van using the boxes?

What are given?

What are being asked?

How will you solve the problem?

What formula will you use? Write the equation.

Solve the problem and state the complete answer.

Do you also give or share to the needy? Why?

How do you share to the needy?

To find the Volume multiply the length, width and height.

V= l x w x h l= 5 cm w=4 cm h=6 cm

V= 120 cm

How do you solve routine and non-routine problems involving volume of a rectangular prism in

real life situations using appropriate strategies and tools?

The steps in solving routine problems are:

a. Understand- Know what is asked, what are given.

 The number of all boxes

 There are 6 layers of 5 boxes in each 4 rows

b. Plan - Know the operation/s to be used.

 Multiplication

Write the number sentence.

 5 cm x 4 cm x 6 cm= N

c. Solve- Solve the problem using the correct operation.

 V= 5x4x6= 120 cm 3

d. Check and Look back- Review and check if the answers make sense.

State the complete answer.

3
 The volume of the container van using the boxes is 120 cm

The steps in solving non-routine problems are:

a. Read and analyze the problem carefully.

b. Tell what is asked and what are given.

c. Use strategies like acting out the problem, listing method, guess and check,

drawing/making a diagram, using patterns, working backwards, eliminating

possibilities and others to solve it.

Let’s Try These

Learning Task 1. Solve the following problems. Find the answer in column A from

column B. Write only the letter.

A B

1. Roy’s room is 4.5 meters long, 3 3

a. 217.8 m
meters wide and 3.5 meters

high. How many cubic meters of

air will his room hold?

648 cm3
b.
2. A matchbox is 10 cm long, 5 cm

wide and 3 cm high. What is its

volume?
47.25 m3
3. One cubic meter of water weighs one c.

gram. How many grams of water

can a plastic container 12 cm by 9 cm

by 6 cm hold?
150 cm3
d.
4. Beside our house is a concrete walk

that measures 15 m

long, 1.5 m wide and 0.12 m thick. How

many cubic meters of concrete does e. 648 cm3

this walk have?

5. Our rectangular pool is 11 m by 9 m by

2.2 m. How many cubic meters of water

Learning Task 3:

Directions: Solve the following problems using routine way.

1. A rectangular block of wood of Mr. Mac Cordero is 2 cm long, 0.1 m

high, and 2 cm wide. What is its volume?

2. A shoe box measures 4 m x 2 m x 0.15 m x. What is the volume

of the box?

3. An aquarium of Mrs. Pila is shaped like a cube. If one side

measures 3.22 c m, what is the volume of the aquarium?

4. A storage box is 6 cm by 4 cm by 15 cm. What is the volume of the

box?

5. Marina needs a box with a dimension of 20 cm long 15 cm wide

and 10 cm high to be used in Mathematics lesson about volume. She

saw a box but she was not sure if the size of the box is correct.

Find the volume of the box.

Learning Task 4.

Directions: Solve the following problems using non-routine way.

(Drawing/making diagram)

1. The out-of-school youths in Barangay Masaya construct a rectangular fish

pond which measures 9 m by 8 m by 1 m in a vacant lot. It is half-filled with

water. How many cubic meters of water are already in the pond?

2. The inside dimensions of a cooler are 35 cm by 20 cm by 20 cm. What is

the capacity of the cooler?

3. A container measures 35 cm by 45 cm by 52 cm. What is the volume of a

container?
