Introduction

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE involves the systematic inspection of equipment

where potential problems are detected and corrected to prevent equipment failure
before it happens. Laboratory equipment require routine monitoring, evaluation,
adjustments, cleaning, and eventual replacement of components.

Preventive maintenance helps to:

 Protect assets and prolong the useful life of production equipment

 Improve system reliability
 Decrease cost of replacement
 Decrease system downtime
 Reduce injury

Equipment failure can have adverse results in both human and economic terms. In
addition to down time and the costs involved to repair and/or replace equipment parts
or components, there is the risk of injury to operators, and of acute exposures to
chemical and/ or physical agents.

Preventive maintenance, therefore, is a very important ongoing accident prevention

activity, which you should integrate into your operations/ product manufacturing
process.

CALIBRATION is the set of operations, under specified conditions, establishing the

relationship between values of quantities by a measuring instrument or measuring
system, or values represented by a material measure or reference material, and the
corresponding values realized by standards.

Calibration helps assure accurate measurements and accurate measurements are

required for most research, development, and innovation as well as safe and profitable
production across virtually all industries of most products and services we use every day.
