CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The Importance of POS (point-of-sale) and Inventory Systems is to keep track of the

flow of goods in the business. A point-of-sale (POS) transaction is what takes place

between a merchant and a customer when a product or service is purchased, commonly

using a point of sale system to complete the transaction. The old method of Point-of-

sale business is using pen and paper system. Traditionally, restaurants have been relying

on their memory – to take orders from their customers. But things are changing

businesses are increasingly adopting POS and Inventory systems to make the business

transaction easy. More and more people are turning the way of technological POS

systems to bring their businesses into trend increasing efficiency leading to better

customer service. Also, POS and inventory systems can decrease errors in taking orders

and it will give a seamless flow throughout the entire dining.

Because of the rapid change in season as the evolution of technology, we could

say that there are these people who are already contented with what they currently have

and there are also others who are not. Most of the time we do not realize suitable ways

to do things using technology. There is a restaurant not only here in the Philippines but

around the world, that’s still using manual operation especially when it comes to

2

financial monitoring of their business. That’s why before they close instead of just

resting, the

owner still needs to count their income using pen and paper. When it gets unlucky, the

record might get lost because it is only on a paper record. We can say that the POS is

the solution to the existing problem which the owner used to encounter especially in

restaurant businesses.

In this POS, stock inventory, data collection, and detailed reports are tracked. If

there is a price change, this can also be easily done through the inventory window. Other

advantages include the ability to implement various types of discounts, a loyalty scheme

for customers, and more efficient stock control. POS is essential to food and beverage

operators that want to deliver a fantastic guest experience, keep control of their cost and

grow their revenues and gain profit. It could also maximize satisfaction and repeat

business. This method would be very helpful to lower down the cost and to lessen the

amount of work that is required to add new menu items or if there’s a change in the price

of the item. It is the most important tool in the business to keep track of every transaction

and by giving the right people to access the Data; we can spot areas of loss and eliminate

them.

Background of the Study

The Business started as a freelance catering service at bike events. Setting up tents,

grills, chairs, tables and other movable furniture which became popular to the mass.

Later on Mr. Nick Laurence A. Agabe, the owner decided to open up a restaurant which

would later on be known as “AGA burger” at Block 2 Lot 11 Ciudad Grande

subdivision, Barangay. Market Area, City of Sta. Rosa Laguna on June 8, 2016. The

Restaurant has bikes hanging from its ceiling as decor. This was Nick’s love for bikes

taking on a cultural impact in his business’s design which attracts a lot of customers

due to its eccentric design. However, they used to use the pen and paper style in

transactions and inventories for almost 5 years. Because of the advancement of

technology, they were open for innovations and they thought of Point of Sale and

Inventory system so that they can catch up with their competitors because they believe

that the advancement of technology in society makes life easy and the computerization

of almost all the systems in the society can make all transactions fast and secure.

Placing orders manually with manual receipts and keeping track of food

inventory is the most important task a restaurant owner should know how to do since

inventory point of sales is one of the most important things in food businesses.

Knowledge of how to make receipts manually and to take food inventory is the first line

of defense against waste and employee theft. Fortunately, all you need to do is follow

few simple steps and you will able to easily place an order and also track waste and

guard against theft. Since they are currently using the manual way when it comes to

ordering and making a payment,

The Effectiveness of POS and Inventory database in improving the flow of business

4

we have observed that transaction gets slow due to some inaccurate way of serving

customers orders. It can also bring up to accidentally switch details of the customer’s

order and end up with inconsistency in handwritten orders. This has the effect of not

only causing the problem to the customer but also making information unable to be

recorded. There’s also a possible error that might occur when it comes to keeping

records and inventory because what if the receipt accidentally being dropped or thrown

somewhere and can no longer be found, so they were not able to encode the sales that

they had on that day and the inventory cannot be computed to get the total amount.

Using the POS inventory system, the transaction will be now computerized,

every transaction will be now recorded to the system and by this way, we can avoid

getting errors and transactions become faster. It will be easier for them to record the

order and to process the payment because in every order the price is being shown in the

system for each item. There’s no need for them to calculate the amount or the money

given by the customer because once they receive the payment, they’ll just enter the

exact amount they had from the customer and then the system will automatically show

how much would be the change. POS is what they need to make the transaction easier

and efficient for both the customer and the owner.

Hypothesis

How will the system affect the flow of work in the establishment and the consistency of

the employees in serving the customers?

H1: By implementing the system the researchers hypothesized that it will

improve the security of data and help the employees in maintaining consistent service.

H2: With the implementation of the system significant changes will be applied

to the establishment especially in productivity and efficiency of the staff in handling

various work.

Statement of the Problem

General Problem

➢ Time-consuming when it comes to taking and serving customers’ orders.

➢ Taking more effort and physical space to keep track of paper documents, to find

information, and to keep details secure.

Specific Problem

➢ Inconsistency in Data entry, rooms for error, miss-keying information.

➢ Lack of efficiency when it comes to serving customers.

➢ The order had been copied more than once.

Objectives

The study aims to develop and implement a POS and computerized Inventory

system of ‘’ AGA Burger’’ that will help the restaurant make their transactions and

Inventories fast, smooth, and secured.

The objectives of the study are:

1. To design, develop and implement a module that will handle the security of the
system.
2. To create a module that generates reports that will record data and to avoid

duplication of data entry

3. To create a module that will facilitate the user access to the system.

4. To create an accurate proposed system to help the restaurant to become more

competitive.

5. To know the benefit and advantages of determining the level of accuracy for the

proposed system.

Theoretical Framework

When met,
Cognitive Comparison satisfied.
Perceive Expectations When not,
Performance Dissatisfied

Figure 1

Assimilation theory is based on Festinger’s (2011) dissonance theory. Dissonance theory

posits that consumers make some kind of cognitive comparison between expectations about the

service and the perceived service performance. The view of the consumer post-usage evaluation

was introduced into the satisfaction literature in the form of assimilation theory. According to

Anderson to Anderson (2012) consumers seek to avoid dissonance by adjusting perceptions

about a given service to bring it more in line with expectations. Consumers can also reduce the

tension resulting from a discrepancy between expectations and service performance or by

raising the level of satisfaction by minimizing the relative importance of the disconfirmation

experienced.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

In general, the focus of this study is directed towards the development of a

computerized process for taking orders, releasing receipts, and a computerized

inventory system. The proponents proposed system for ‘’AGA Burger ‘restaurant can

do file maintenance, product maintenance, product transactions, create accounts and

reports.

To design, develop and implement a POS and Inventory system.

Scope

The scope of this POS and Inventory system is the system itself regulating and

which will be used in the business. It will be focused on the inventory wherein the

system has a capability for an easier inventory of all products in the storage room. It

can manage to generate computerized receipts and reports accurately. And lastly, it will

keep track of all the businesses in and out most especially its file maintenance wherein

it would automatically add, delete, save, update, and retrieve information of files. This

POS will be able to determine the remaining stocks, if there is a good flow in the

business, to be able to determine what are the items are going to pull out for slow-

moving, and the inventory if the products are sold and what good are for purchase.

Issues not discussed here are not included in the scope of this study.

Limitation

This POS and inventory system disregard major credit card transactions during

payment, cash payment only is accepted. This standalone unit will process everything

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Review of Related Literature

This discusses foreign and local literature. The information indicated was gathered in

internet sites, journals, and various books relating to the researcher’s topic.

Foreign Literature

As defined by Carolina Barcode Inc. (2013), a Point-of-Sale system is computer

software and hardware networked together to track sales and inventory as they occur.

Point-of-Sale systems will solve a multitude of problems in your business. It is one of

the focal points of any retail or hospitality business in the cash register. The ability to

process transactions and tender cash is essential to the efficient operation of the

enterprise. If you have a lot of cash transactions, replacing the cash registers with a

Point-Of-Sale (POS) system saves you money. At an early age when most of the

companies are still using the manual system in the sales and inventory, most of the

company encountered so many problems and this is because the process of the existing

system is too slow and too long.

According to Hold (2010) article, “Inventory refers to stocks of anything necessary to

do business”. The US Small Business Administration publication describes what

constitutes successful inventory management balancing cost versus benefits of

inventory, including Maintaining a wide assortment without sacrificing service;

The Effectiveness of POS and Inventory database in improving the flow of business
and detailed reports in AGA Burger
13

keeping stock low without sacrificing performance obtaining lower prices by making

volume purchases, and maintaining an adequate inventory without an excess of obsolete

items.

According to Kaye Morris (2010), a manual inventory management system can help

sales and production managers control costs by identifying lost sales due to inventory

shortages; inventory overrides on products that are not selling; losses due to employee

theft or damage. Implementing an inventory management system can take a large

amount of time depending on the size and diversity of inventory. Web-based point-of-

sale systems are preferred over software-based POS systems because they are easily

upgradeable, and feature access from multiple computers.

(Carter, 2012) The best thing about having a computerized POS System in your retail

business is: as a new stock arrives and as it is sold, it keeps the stock levels current and

updated, hence making it is easier to identify which items are selling and which items

are not. APOS System is also good in checking for any obsolete or out-of-date stock

that needs to be disposed. If you are still counting your inventory manually on the

shelves or in the warehouse, you should think twice about your method, for there are

many advantages in using a POS System.

One advantage of a POS System is its ability to help your business achieve detailed

real- time stock level information. In addition, a POS System can also give you

information such as weather forecasts, public holidays, and major sporting events,

which can be of great help in determining the stock level of seasonal products. You can

and detailed reports in AGA Burger
14

now efficiently and effectively handle your stock management accurately (Ganderton,

2010).

One of the biggest, and probably one of the most important, advantages of an

automated sales and inventory system is that it helps businesses focus on their biggest

goal, to improve the customer’s experience at the store (Mueller, 2011). With this

system, companies can have a better understanding of customer demand through the

analysis of their sales and inventory.

According to Janes (2011) stated that computers are extremely reliable device and very

powerful calculators with some great accessories applications like word processing

problem for business activities, regardless of size, computers have three advantages

over other types of office equipment that process information because a computer is

faster, more accurate more economical. Inventory management systems were created to

help dealerships implement, maintain, and fine-tune their inventory plans. Dealers who

use inventory management systems realize quicker vehicle turns and a higher ROI

INPUT than dealers that don’t. Choosing the right system can make a significant

contribution to your inventory management efforts. This strategy helps a lot to come up

with a successful outcome. (Zierden, 2009).

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, “Inventory refers to stocks of

anything necessary to do business” (U.S. Small Business Administration, 2010, pp 1-

2). The U.S. Small Business Administration publication describes what constitutes

successful inventory management (balancing cost versus benefits of inventory),

including Maintaining a wide assortment without spreading the rapidly moving items

too thin, increasing inventory turnover without sacrificing service, keeping stock low
The Effectiveness of POS and Inventory database in improving the flow of business
and detailed reports in AGA Burger
15

without sacrificing performance, obtaining lower prices by making volume purchases,

Maintaining an adequate inventory without an excess of obsolete items.

Cashman stated in her book “System Analysis and Design”, (2011) that transaction

processing system data generated by day-to-day business operations. Transaction

processing is efficient because they process a set of transaction-related commands as a

group rather than individually to protect data integrity however, TP systems ensure that

if any single element of a transaction fails, the system does not process the next

transaction. Sales are affected by many factors besides advertising, such as product

features, price, and availability.

Service is anything that an organization offers to customers. It how customers’ needs

are satisfied. Service organizations needs to follow a strategic approach for effective

service that can increase customer satisfaction that influences profitability (Ketler,

2009).

According to Nicole Fallon (2013), investors in uncertain, rapidly changing product

markets like consumer electronics react more strongly to customer satisfaction. Nokia,

for example, saw a rise in its American Customer Satisfaction Index (ASCI) figure in

May, followed by reports of increased interest from large institutional investors.

According to Stair and Reynolds (2009) in their book, Principles of Information System,

sales and marketing information systems are used to develop new good and services

16

(product analysis), determine the best location for production and distribution facilities

(place or site analysis), determine the best advertising and sales approaches (promotion

analysis), and set product prices to get the highest total revenues (price analysis).

Local Literature

According to PLDT (Manila, Philippines, April 15, 2011), small and medium

enterprises, who long for a point-of-sale (POS) system that can track how much they

sell and how much stock they have left at their stores in real-time and from anywhere,

can now turn to PLDT SME Nation

“Inventory System for Best Choice Rice Dealer” by Bisagas, Arivada, and Tanteo

(October 2009). The process of counting the sacks of rice is done manually, which

corresponds to difficulty in tallying the number of available stocks and sold items. The

Manual generation of inventory reports such as daily, weekly, quarterly, and annual

inventory list of records remains as one of their key problems since the establishment

of the business. The transaction processing system for Best Choice Rice Dealer will

minimize the difficulty of the owner in processing inventory. It will monitor the

availability of product items for reorder to prevent under-stocking, overstocking, or

running out of stocks. The system will also generate necessary reports of inventory such

as sales reports.

According to Jinisys Software Inc. and Above Infranet Solutions Inc., points of sales

systems are replacing the traditional cash registers for the better in the Philippines. The

POS has redefined the level of efficiency and accuracy in the sphere of sales. The

system is designed to cater to a wide range of operations and is customizable for any

specific business. These systems have made the work at the counter a whole lot easier

and detailed reports in AGA Burger
17

and manageable. Administration and accounting are the other two areas that have seen

significant improvement with the installation of this software. POS Philippines

is designed to automate and handle multiple functions at the sales point. Its primary

function is to record and track every order placed and sales completed. The whole

process takes lesser time compared to traditional methods of billing. Recording of sale

details in the database help in bringing it up whenever required for analysis and

verification. The interface of this system is very user-friendly which facilitates faster

response from the sales executive’s end. Touch screen UI is provided to the sales teams

for quicker turnaround time. For POS designed for restaurants, order tracking systems

and kitchen order routing is automated which avoids time-lapses and minimizes

liabilities. Reduced human intervention results in improved efficiency in this sphere.

A study by Averion, Gaela, and Libo (2009) entitled “Monitoring and Inventory for

discovery Mall.com”, stated that: “It will minimize the difficulty of the manager in

processing inventory because of physical counting products, stocks, and computing

inventory summary will be the system job. It will monitor the availability of products,

items to prevent under-stocking, overstocking, and running out of stocks. The system

will also simplify the transaction between dealer and supplier relationship because the

updated supplier information and price list of items will correspond to collaboration

with another supplier.’’

An article by Junaito Villegas (June 23, 2009) entitled “Inventory controls are key to

dissuade employees from stealing” states that: “Computers can only do much, but

coupled with inculcating honesty among staff and instituting the appropriate deterrents,

they can work very well in minimizing losses and pilferages. It is therefore highly

advisable to do both the manual and the computerized inventory system in a retail and

wholesale business.” Josefina Estolas in the book Fundamentals of Research (2009), in

exploration, we find new techniques, knowledge, even developed new substances,

gadgets, equipment’s, processes or procedures, imagination, and skill is employed by

the researcher. The commodities, new devices, services, in technology are needs of man

for a better fuller life which is the concern of the research. These useful arts are the

product of the technological environment and the end-user is the society in general.

Review of Related Studies

This presents both of foreign and local studies. Information was gathered in other

dissertations and research projects on the internet and in schools.

Foreign studies

According to a recent Aberdeen Group study (March 2012), companies are prioritizing

supply chain visibility, inventory optimization, supply chain analytics, and supply chain

outsourcing as ways to cut supply chain management (SCM)costs this year.

According to IBM (October 2012) Innovations such as just-in-time manufacturing bar

codes and RFID tags have revolutionized supply chain management. Unfortunately,

these innovations have brought with them staggering amounts of data to deal with. This

white paper outlines some of the major factors affecting inventory and supply chain

management.

According to the thesis of Carlo Magno, “There was a groundswell to move

from paper signature and documents because the task of record management was huge.

We had file cabinets full of backup materials. By converting from a manual process,

we would be able to eliminate a lot of paper. We could go further with the automation

of the manual process and remove manual paperwork if people trusted the technology.

Point-of-sale systems have replaced traditional cash registers, largely for functionality

reasons. POS systems, as they are sometimes called, are relatively easy to use and help

provide valuable data for important decision-makers. To keep up with the record-

keeping needs of small and mid-sized businesses, a good point-of-sale system is

necessary. Early electronic cash registers (ECR) were controlled with proprietary

software and were very limited in function and communications capability. In August

1973 IBM announced the IBM 3650 and 3660 Store Systems that were, in essence, a

mainframe computer packaged as a store controller that could control 128 IBM

3653/3663 point of sale registers. This system was the first commercial use of client-

server technology, peer-to-peer communications, and Local Area Network (LAN)

simultaneous backup and remote initialization. By mid-1974, it was installed in

Pathmark Stores in New Jersey and Dillard's Department Stores. Programmability

allowed retailers to be more creative. In 1979 Gene Mosher's Old Canal Cafe in

Syracuse, New York was using POS software written by Mosher that ran on an Apple

II to take customer orders at the restaurant's front entrance and print complete

preparation details in the restaurant's kitchen. In that novel context, customers would

often proceed to their tables to find their food waiting for them already. This software

included real-time labor and food cost reports. In 1986 Mosher used the Atari ST and

bundled

NeoChrome paint to create and market the first graphical touch screen POS software.

Local Studies

According to J.De Leon and M. Ferrer (2009) Under the Korean Red Ginseng

Enterprise Sales and Inventory System, the researchers came up with a computerized

sales and inventory system. The proponents used a database to easily access files and

for easier and faster processing of the selling and inventory transaction. The program

was designated to generate reports such as monthly reports, inventory reports, sales

invoices, and a list of items.

Based on the research entitled “Computerized Sales and Inventory system for Ronmon

Trading” (de Alday, Espino, Ragudo), 2010, the replacement of the manual system with

the proposed system provided more efficient and accurate processing of a transaction.

The said system is much reliable, eliminates errors and inaccurate information, and

provided valuable reports with integrity. Also stated in the research, “Sales and

Inventory System for Schema Megacenter” (Almeda, Dañez, Geronimo), the proposed

system is not just only accurate, reliable, and fast in processing transactions rather it is

also provided a more systematic way of transacting with the members and through the

billing system also helped the employees to save a lot of time on transaction processing.

In the study entitled

“Osaka Sales and Inventory System” (Laranang, Maaño, and Nañola, 2009) states that

business nowadays takes the advantage of using modern technology to improve their

status and ensuring an efficient and newer way to make their work easier. They state

that the main problem of the Osaka Iridology is what modern effective tool must be

used in creating and developing a sales and inventory system that will manage

efficiently their transaction. So they develop a system that inclusively for the

transaction of Osaka Iridology, such as monitoring of their medicine and their daily

sale.

Synthesis of the Reviewed Literature and Studies

The foreign and local literature mentioned above are related to the proponent proposed

systems in terms of using point of sales, and Inventory system on their business or

establishments. The Financial Management system can be used in a different business

establishments engaged in sales. The said foreign and local studies contribute ideas to

the proponent to originate the proposed literature. The information gathered by the

proponent has a big help in the development of the study. The facts and data contained

realistic ideas, guides, and analyses to be able to come up with the proposed study. The

related literature as well as related studies stated previously have similarities and

differences. Both systems are similar when it comes to usability in POS and Inventory

systems. The set of foreign and local studies and literature stated above has been one of

the bases of the proponent on how the proposed system will be useful. It also provides

1. Analysis

Analysis gathers the requirements for the system such as software to be used and

the history and background of the business. This stage includes a detailed study of

the business needs of the organization. Options for changing the business process

may be considered. In this phase, the proponent analyzed all the major and minor

problems and the factors that may influence their study.

2. Design

The design focuses on high-level design like, what programs are needed and how

are they going to interact, low-level design (how the individual programs are going

to work), interface design (what are the interfaces going to look like), and date

design (what data will be required). In this phase, the proponent focuses on the

design of the program and its function and to be a user-friendly system.

3. Implementation

In this phase, the designs are translated into code. Computer programs are written

using a conventional programming language or an application generator.

Programming language or an application generator. Programming tools like

Compilers, Interpreters, and Debuggers are used to generate the code. High-level

programming language which is Php, CSS, Bootstrap is used for coding in this POS

and Inventory system. In this phase, the proponent chooses what programming

language is to be used for the architectural construction of the program and starts

coding the system.

4. Testing

In this phase, the system is tested. Normally programs are written as a series of

Individual modules, this subject to a separate and detailed test. The system is then

tested as a whole. The separate modules are brought together and tested as a

complete system. In this phase, the proponent checked and tested the program to

find errors and difficulties so that the proponents do be having enough time to

repair.0020

5. Maintenance

Inevitably the system will need maintenance. The software will change once it is

delivered to the customer. There are many reasons for the change. The change could

happen because some unexpected input values into the system could directly affect

the software operations. The software should be developed to accommodate

changes that could happen during the post-implementation period. In this phase, the

proponents will conduct research and study to continuously develop the system.

Population, Sample Size, and Sampling Technique

AGA Burger’s whole employee body consists only of the admin and a few

kitchen staff and the cashier which roughly exceeds five (5) personnel. Since the system

will only be used by the staff and the administrator. The research that will be conducted

will be focusing on the improvement of the flow of work within the establishment and

the efficiency of the system. The sample size of the population of this study is a total of

six (6) people max including the admin. The questionnaires handed out to the person

will be the priority of concern using close-ended questions.

Respondents

The respondents of the study will be the cashier and manager. The researchers

prepared a set of logical questions. The researchers surveyed everyone involved in the

inventory process. The respondents are the ones who will be affected by the system

when it is implemented so they can answer the questions and provide information that

the researchers needed.

Data Gathering Procedure

To attain the goal of the researchers, the researchers had to rely on surveys and

interviews. The survey consists of close-ended questions that will be answered with a

simple yes or no. The questions related to the system that the researchers created. This

will greatly help to the improvement of the system.

Research Instruments

A research instrument is a tool used to obtain, measure, and analyze data from

subjects around the research topic. The researchers decided on close-ended

questionnaires that are handed out to the specified target for the improvement of the

system.

Requirements Specification

The system must be simple yet useful and reliable, said the owner AGA Burger.

There should be tabs that are required for the transaction to work like the item tab, price

tab, quantity tab, amount tab, and also another tab where the transaction with the

customer starts. The employee/cashier will just click the item in the menu tab which the

customer being ordered, after ordering and giving their payment, the transaction will

now be processed. There will be an “Add Item” button wherein the admin can update

the inventory, they were also able to delete/remove some items and change each price

increase. A log-in button will be displayed in which the admin and the cashier can

register their username and password to start the transaction. The admin is the only one

who can access the inventory, check the stocks, and update, delete, and add items. The

system will be designed as simple yet helpful and useful for both the admin and cashier.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

The inclusion of POS and Inventory System into Aga-burger provides a

comprehensive sales and inventory system that is capable of providing efficient and

easy access to sales and inventory conditions to customers. There are problems that

Aga-burger encountered. One of them is that their records don’t coincide with their

manually recorded data. Another problem is that they often forgot to record the items

that have been sold because of misplacing some of the receipts. The solution to this

problem is to make an automated or computerize sales and inventory system. Through

this system, it can minimize their time and can help them process their inventory easily.

It is a hassle-free and easy access system. The system can add new items, edit if there’s

a price increase, and can delete data. It also has a transaction process so that every item

that the customer will buy will automatically be recorded to the system. How the system

works is that the user must input her/his username and password for him or her to access

the inventory, transaction process, and adding and deleting of data. The only person to

access the inventory is the manager while the transaction process can also be accessed

by the cashier. The inventory consists of the list of the items, the quantity, and their

price. While the transaction process consists of inputting data such as the Item name,

Item price, and the quantity of the item, also the amount received from the customer.

By clicking the submit button, the transaction

will now be processed and the data will automatically be saved. After saving it will

automatically appear on the inventory sales.

Conclusion

POS and Inventory System have been developed to achieve maximum efficiency and

reduce the time taken to handle the sales and inventory. It is designed to replace an

existing manual record system thereby reducing the time taken for calculations and for

storing data. The system is strong enough to withstand regressive daily operation under

conditions where the database is maintained and cleared over a certain period. The

implementation of the system in the AGA burger will considerably reduce errors and

will give satisfaction to the customer and the restaurant.

Recommendation

Upon the interview and the information that we gather and the findings and conclusion

come out with, the proponents highly recommend that POS and inventory system must

be implemented to Aga-burger because with this system, it will help them to have a

faster transaction when it comes to ordering, avoidance of human error, recording data

in an efficient way and they will become more competitive. After implementing the

system, new data will be gathered to find out how to improve the recent POS and

inventory system. The proponents recommend that there must be a study on how POS

and inventory systems must be secure kind of system so that they will be more useful.
