One of the major waste materials that is seen clogging waterways, strewn on street and roads

are plastic bags, and styrofoams, etc.

Mankayan implemented an ordinance known as An Ordinance Regulating the Use, Sale, and
Disposal of Plastic Bags and styrofoams in the Municipality of Mankayan and Providing Penalties
Thereof, and was executed since 2014 until now.

The ordinance shall cover all groceries, retail stores, meat dealers, fish dealers, vegetable
dealers, and other related business establishment in the municipality, and are required to use paper
bags or other biodegradable like newspapers and paper wrappings, as bags for all wet and dry goods
and groceries, instead of plastic bags. Also, plastic shall only be allowed as primary packaging material if
only necessary, when wet goods wet the paper bag.

That’s why customers are advised to bring their own shopping bags which is sturdy and reusable
like bayong, buri bags, cloth bags, hard plastic bags, sack bags, and boxes or crates.

Using, selling and providing plastic bag as secondary packaging material, using, selling, and
providing Styrofoam as containers for food and disposing plastic and Styrofoam wastes are prohibited.

Anyone who go against the said prohibited acts will be charged with penalties. For the first
offense: fine of P500.00, second offense: fine of P1,000.00, third offense: fine of P1,500.00 and
suspension of business permit for one month to one year, at the discretion of the court. For the habitual
offenders is cancellation and non-renewal of business permit.

Lepanto National High School is conducting a supplemental feeding program for the
underweight learners since August 29 and ongoing, fund by the Lepanto Women’s Association (LWA).

15 wasted students and 7 severely wasted students participate in this activity and also learners
that don’t have snacks because given snacks are more than needed.

Every Wednesday lightweight learners go to the School Clinic to eat healthy or heavy snacks
such as pancit, bread, spaghetti, and drinks like milk, and milo assisted by Clinic teacher Caroline Ferrer.

The program aims to enhance the nutritional status of the underweight and also they monitor
learner’s diet at home.

According to school nurse Joyce Cayamdas in their weekly observation student’s weight
improved.

“Thankful tan adadu iti sponsors, I’m hoping for more sponsors tapno makumpleto tayo day 100
days feeding program ken tapno haan lang nga every Wednesday so it will be everyday”, said Nurse
Cayamdas.
