WORKSHEET TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS Bernaldo, Cristine Mae

INSTRUCTIONS:
Write complete, balanced equations and names of products for all cases that a reaction takes place. Observation of a reaction that
occurred would be by a color change, by the formation of a gas, by the formation of a precipitate, or by an energy change (exothermic or
endothermic). Those cases showing no evidence of a reaction, write “No Reaction.”

1. Burning of magnesium in Synthesis 2 Mg(s) + O2 (g) 2 MgO (s) Magnesium oxide change, as the reactants, oxygen,
air and magnesium are combined

Single
2. Reaction of Zinc with Dilute Displacement/ Red and blue litmus paper didn’t
Sulfuric acid Replacement Zn+H2SO4 ZnSO4+H2 Zinc Hydroxide change

3. Heating of Copper sulfate Decomposition Because of the heat the color of the
CuSO4·5H2O(s) CuSO4(s)+H2O(I) Anhydrous Copper copper sulfate changes from blue
Sulphate to white.
4. Reaction of Iron Nails with Single
Copper Sulphate Solution in Wat Displacement/ After the iron nail was dipped for
Replacement CuSO4(aq)+Fe(s) FeSO4(aq)+Cu(s) Ferrous Sulphate a long period of time the color of
the copper sulphate solution
changes from blue to green.
5. Reaction Between Sodium Double A white precipitate of barium
Sulphate and Barium Chloride Displacement sulphate is formed in the boiling
Solution Reaction Na2SO4(aq)+BaCl2(aq) BaSO4+2Na(aq) Sodium Sulphate, tube. It confirms the presence of
Barium Chloride sulphate. After keeping the

content of boiling for 10 mins, the
white precipitate in the test tube
settles the upper solution in the
boiling tube into the beaker. After
adding few drops of dilute HCL to
the white precipitate, white
precipitate remains insoluble in
the dilute HCL.

POST-LAB QUESTIONS
1. Magnesium metal, Mg, reacts with 0.5 M HCl, but copper metal, Cu, does not. Why?
- In most cases, metals react with acid to produce salt and hydrogen gas. Any acid will not react with a metal that is below hydrogen in the reactivity
series because it is unreactive with hydrogen ions in the solution. Copper is a less reactive metal; therefore, it is unaffected by acids. Cu, on the other
hand, does not react with HCl because Cu has a greater reduction potential than hydrogen. Non-oxidizing acids react only with metals that have a lower
reduction potential than hydrogen. (Siyayula n.d.)

2. From the following list of chemicals, select two combinations that would lead to a double replacement reaction.
Write the complete, balanced equations for the reactions of the chemicals in the solution.
KCl HNO3 AgNO3 PbCl2 Na2SO4

KCL + AgNO3 — AgCl + KNO3

K=1 K= 1
Cl = 1 Cl = 1
Ag = 1 Ag = 1
N=1 N=1
O=3 O=3

3. Solid potassium chlorate, KClO3, decomposes upon heating.

a. Write a complete balanced equation for the decomposition.
KClO3 — KCl+O2
2KClO3 — 2KCl+3O2
K=2 K=2
Cl = 2 Cl = 2
O=6 O=6

b. What gas is given off and how may it be detected?

- Oxygen gas. When KCIO3 is heated, it breaks down and releases oxygen

c. What chemical can be used to detect the salt which remains from the decomposition? Write a complete balanced equation for the reaction of the
chemical with the salt.

Na + Cl2 — NaCl
2 Na + Cl2 — 2NaCl
Na = 1x2=2 Na = 1x2 = 2
Cl = 2 Cl = 1x2 = 2
