ACTIVITY 2: THE ARTICLES

PLAGIARISM

FIRST ARTICLE:

1. In what competition did Solis send in his plagiarized work?

 The competition that Solis sent his plagiarized work was his recent “Smiles for
the World Photo Contest” and conceptualized by Chilean Ambassador Roberto
Mayorga. Aside from that is the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation
contest. He also entered Papworth Trust's photo competition and Sustainable
Development photo contest.

2. What sanctions did he receive from the organizing committee? Describe his actions.
 Unfortunately, Mark Solis became a probationary staff member for three months
under the legislative of Senator Pia Cayetano. Also, he has not been connected to the
office of Senator Cayetano.

 Mark Joseph Solis is a graduate student of University of the Philippines. Based

on the article, he joined at least 5 photo contests since 2011 but his entry or work was
plagiarized or using the photo taken and owned by another person. The most recent
photo that Solis claimed to be  his own was submitted to Smiles for the World photo
contest conceptualized by Chilean Ambassador Roberto Mayorga. Solis submitted a
photo of a boy whom he said was named Nilo and was from Zamboanga City and
stated that the boy helped his father farm seaweed. The real owner of the photograph
was Gregory John Smith and revealed that Solis abused his copyright.

3. Do you think technology and the internet have made plagiarism easier? Do you think
technology has made people more or less creative? Explain your answer with
examples.
 I think technology and the internet have made plagiarism easier. People might
think that it is easy for them if they will just get even without permission maybe because
the real owner will not be aware that they get that work. Nowadays, in a matter of
seconds by just clicking and searching what we are needed on our gadgets and if we
have access on the internet, people can easily get and copy the work of others.
Example is based on the article; Solis used a photo even though he is not the real
owner of it. With the help of technology or gadgets, he accessed social networking sites
specifically the Flickr. It was easy for Solis to get the photos that he plagiarized because
in a bit of seconds without difficulties, he already has his submitted work yet it is not a
fruit of hard work.

 I think technology has made people less creative just like in plagiarism. Although
people have their own ideas, abilities and perceptions about a certain topic, they will
just search on different social networking sites. Sometimes, they will not credit the real
owner of those ideas and copied works that might result in plagiarism. Example is in
this article also, wherein Solis gets the photo of Smith without any hardship on doing
that work and credits on it. It is extremely good if we achieved something with a fruit of
hard work, dedication, effort and perseverance.
SECOND ARTICLE

1. According to the article, how did Solis redeem himself? What job did he have?
 According to the article, Solis redeemed himself by managing a football
program for street children at a makeshift field inside the Baclaran church compound
in Pasay City. For two years working with children and as a part of his redemption, he
participated  to help them in their personal and spiritual development.

2. What project did he help?

 The project wherein he helps to promote the Calidad Humana which is a Filipino
values loosely translated as kabutihang loob s kapwa or goodness to fellowmen.

3. What is there to learn about the life of Solis?

 When Solis has suffered harsh criticism on social media over his plagiarism
case, he repented and redeemed himself for the wrongdoing that he has done. Even
though he was charged on plagiarism and being criticized by other people, he continued
his life and became a better person. All people have a chance to help themselves to
change for good. If we feel that our life was so damaged, we can work hard to recover
and do not give up.

CYBER BULLYING

1. What did Carabuena do that made netizens angry?

 Carabuena had been caught on camera berating and slapping Metropolitan
Manila Development Authority after he was pulled over for a traffic violation. The video
became broadcast and went viral on the web wherein many people watched the video.
As a result, Carabuena was being cyber bullied.

2. Describe the acts of cyber bullying that the netizens did to Carabuena. Do you think
their actions are justifiable? Defend your answer.
 Carabuena received hurtful comments on netizens like he should be killed and
having 40 pages on facebook dedicated to Carabuena like “Pata, yin si Robert Blair
Carabuena.” There is also now a parody Twitter account for Carabuena knowing that
netizens were angry at him.

3. How did the incident affect Carabuena’s life?

 The incident affected Carabuena’s life so he decided to shut down all of his
social media accounts. He also chose to stay at home because his life was in danger
and many people threatened him

4. Do you think technology and the Internet has made bullying easier?
 I think technology and the Internet has made bullying easier because the bullies
can spread or disseminate images, videos and other information that is hurtful to
someone involved. People can do it anonymously by just posting on social networking
sites, it can be threatened and the victim of cyber bullying will be afraid.

5. Give one suggestion to avoid cyber bullying. Give one suggestion to avoid being a
cyber bully.
 My suggestion to avoid cyber bullying is to have proper guidance by announcing
to all people that cyber bullying is a crime and there is a corresponding penalty to
those who committed bullying.
 My suggestion to avoid cyber bully is being educated on social media and
knowing the impact or to realize the consequences of their actions on others.

DIGITAL DIVIDE
1. What were the positive effects of having faster internet speed as shown in the
McKinsey Global Institute research?
 The positive effects of having faster internet speed as shown in the McKinsey
Global Institute research are expanding the economic growth, job creation, spending
and service delivery efficiencies across sectors, reduction on CO2 emissions via smart
grids, increased patient coverage in health care and low - cost mass education.

2. Describe the internet connection status in the Philippines, in terms of number of

people with internet connection, the average internet broadband download speed
compared to other countries, and the average cost of monthly Internet services.
 The internet connection status in the Philippines in terms of number of people
with internet connection is around 64% of its population (Bueno & Pacis, 2014) and the
Philippines lags behind its peers in broadband enablement. The average internet
broadband download speed in the Philippines is 31.44 Mbps (Philippines News Agency,
2021) compared to Australia where 93% of all homes, businesses, and schools are
using high - speed fiber optic. On the other hand, 50% homes in Malaysia have two
Mbps. In line with the average cost of monthly internet services in the Philippines that is
usually Php 1600.00.

3. How does the Philippines’ slow Internet connection affect the SMEs? Do you think a
faster Internet connection can promote better income for them? Explain your answer.
 The Philippines’ slow Internet connection affects the SMEs so it will become
slower on its progress and the emerging businesses can be lost and put it in a risk. I
think a faster Internet connection can promote better income for them because it is a
great opportunity for the SMEs to develop and grow their business in other emerging
markets.

4. Do you think commercial stores or offices should have websites? What are the
advantages and disadvantages that can you foresee?

 I think commercial stores or offices should have websites so it will expand and
become more popular to different people who can see the website. The advantages that
I foresaw are websites can be a way to promote what are the products or services that
are being provided, to know all about the products and services, and also to easily
discover even though the consumers are in their house or other places. The
disadvantages that I foresaw are if the websites cannot easily be opened and accessed
by the other people due to technical problems of the stores or offices, slow connection
and unreliable information.

COMPUTER ADDICTION
1. From the research, do boys and girls share the same Internet usage? Explain your
answer. Cite statistics or data.
 From the research, boys and girls are not having the same Internet usage. The
figure was higher among girls at 46 percent, whereas 36 percent of boys thought they
were addicted. The survey found that girls spent more time chatting to friends on
social networks while boys were more absorbed by computer games.
2. Cite one real life example in your school or community of teenagers who have
experienced computer addiction. What happened to them? Have they recovered from
their addiction?
 One example in our community who experienced computer addiction is my
brother wherein it affected his mental and physical health. He always lacks sleep
because of online games on the computer, always absent in school, going to the
computer shop and cutting classes, not eating at the right time, and blurred vision. Yes,
he recovered from his addiction because he realized and felt the impact of it on his
physical and mental health. My mother compensated all of his gadgets to help him in
recovering with addiction.

3. Give two pieces of advice from Tablets for Schools to avoid computer addiction.
 There should also be time limits on how youngsters can use devices with specific times
during the day or week for being ‘unplugged’.
 Find new ‘boredom busters’ - activities they enjoy away from using the internet
