2 Company ABC has a fund of $300,000 available for investment in stocks. There
are three categories of stocks available for investment, namely high-risk, medium-
risk and low-risk. The investment in low-risk stocks is to be thrice the sum of the
investments in stocks of the other two categories. High-risk stocks will have a return
rate of 12% per year, medium-risk stocks 6% per year and low-risk stocks 3% per
year. If the investment goal is to achieve a return of 5% per year on the total
investment, determine how much the company should invest in each type of stock.
(Assume that all the money available for investment is invested.) [4]

A container is made to store a certain powdered medication. It consists of 3 parts.

x A cylindrical box, opened at one end, of external radius r cm, external height h
cm and thickness 1 cm throughout.
x A solid disc of radius r cm and height 1 cm which is used to cover the box.
x A solid handle attached on top of the disc in the shape of a sphere of radius one-
third of the external radius of the box.

When the cover, consisting of the disc with the handle attached, is fitted onto the
top of the box, the volume of the medication contained in the container will be 20
cm3 when full. The material used to make the cylindrical box and the cover of the
container costs $0.50 per cm3.

12 Two athletes signed up for the 13 km Nanyang Marathon. In preparation for this
marathon, the athletes planned a 16-day personalised training programme as
follows:
Athlete A will run 0.4 km on the first day of the training programme and for each
subsequent day, the distance he will run is increased by x km.
Athlete B will run 0.6 km on the first day of the training programme and for each
subsequent day, the distance he will run is 10% more than the distance ran for the
previous day.

on the last day of the training programme. [2]
(ii) Athlete B targets to run a total distance of 26 km in these 16 days. Can he
achieve this target? You must show sufficient workings to justify your
answer. [2]
