1. In the diagram [not drawn to scale], QR and PR are straight lines.

Q (0, 12)

P (0, 2) R (r, 2)

x
0

(a) Given that the equation of the line QR is parallel to the line y=−2 x+5 ,
write down the equation of the line QR. [1]
(b) Calculate
(i) the coordinates of the point R, [2]
(ii) the length of QR. [2]

2. In February, Daniel invested an amount of $2.5 million for an apartment in a prime

area, when the rate at that time was $x per square foot (sq ft). In August of the same
year, due to cooling measures, the price of property in the same prime area had

depreciated to $ ( x−120 ) per square foot. At this time, another investor, Gideon
paid $2.5 million for a different apartment in the same area.
(a) Write down an expression, in terms of x, for the area of the apartment that
Daniel bought. [1]
(b) Write down an expression, in terms of x, for the area of the apartment that
Gideon bought. [1]
(c) Given that the size of the apartment that Gideon had purchased was 50 sq ft
more than that of Daniel’s, form an equation in x and show that it reduces to
2
x −120 x−6 000 000=0 . [3]
(d) Solve this equation, giving your answers correct to the nearest ten dollars. [2]

(e) Hence, calculate the size of the apartment bought by Gideon, giving your
answer correct to the nearest sq ft. [2]
(f) If Daniel sold his apartment in August, calculate the loss incurred in this
transaction. Leave your answer to the nearest ten dollars. [2]

3. In the figure below, PQRST is a circle with O as the centre. PX and RX are tangents

4. The speed-time graphs below show a cheetah chasing a gazelle, and finally catching
it. At the start of the chase, the cheetah was 50 m away from the gazelle.

Speed

A
25

B

time
0 5 t /s

(a) Which animals do graphs A and B depict? Give a reason for your answer. [1]
(b) Find the acceleration of the cheetah. [1]
(c) Find the speed of the gazelle after 2.2 seconds. [2]
(d) Given that the cheetah catches the gazelle at t seconds, find t. [2]
(e) The animals then decelerate uniformly to rest 0.5 seconds after t.
Copy the diagram into your answer sheet and complete the graphs. [1]

5. Answer the whole of this question on a sheet of graph paper.
16
y = 20 − − 4x
The variables x and y are connected by the equation x . Some
corresponding values of x and y are given in the following table.

x 1 1.5 2 2.5 3 4 5 6 7
y 0 r 4.0 3.6 2.7 s -3.2 -6.7 -10.3

(a) Calculate the values of r and s. [2]

16
y = 20 − − 4x
(b) Draw the graph of x for 1 ≤ x ≤ 7 , by taking 2 cm to
represent 1 unit on the x-axis and 1 cm to represent 1 unit on the y-axis. [3]
(c) From the graph, find
i. the maximum value of y, [1]
ii. the values of x when y = 2, [1]
(d) By drawing a tangent, find the gradient of the graph at the point where
x=3 .5 . [2]
(e) By drawing a suitable straight line on the same axes, use your graph to find

16
15 − −3 x=0
the solution(s) to the equation x . [3]
