Lesson
Interpreting Quartiles
1
What I Need to Know

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to interpret quartiles.

What’s In

In the previous module, you learned how to calculate specified measures of

position. You discovered how to solve for the specified values of Quartiles, Deciles
and Percentiles. And this time you are going to interpret them. This lesson will teach
you how to interpret quartiles. But before you interpret the specified Quartile
measures, you first need to go back on how Quartiles are illustrated.

QUARTILE For this Quartile Percentage

1st Quartile Q1, Lower Quartile 25%
2nd Quartile Q2, Middle Quartile 50%
3rd Quartile Q3, Upper Quartile 75%
4th Quartile Q4, Maximum 100%

Quartiles are a form of percentiles. Quartiles split the distribution into four.
Another way to recall this easily is that quartile sounds similar to quarter, which is a
fourth.

And now, are you ready to interpret quartiles?

Questions:
1. What is the value of Q3?
2. What is the equivalent percentage of Q3?
3. What does the result of Q3 implies?

What is It
In interpreting quartiles, you will look into the correct percentage
equivalence of Q1, Q2, and Q3 which are 25%, 50%, and 75% respectively. Then
discuss the meaning of the obtained position.

Comprehensive Discussion:

Let’s go back to the Problem above.

Question no. 1: What is the value of Q3?

How did you find the activity? Hope you learned a lot. The next activity will
help you learn more about this lesson. Have fun learning! You can do it.

What’s More

Directions: Interpret the following problems. Write your answers on a separate

sheet of paper.
1. A certain community with 2500 residents. If 75% of the residents are
following the quarantine rules, then how many are not obeying the rules?
2. Xia loves to sing. Her score in a singing contest surpassed 75% of the
scores of the rest of the contestants. What does it mean?
3. June scored at the 2nd quartile on a Mobile Legend online game. How can
this be interpreted?
4. Maris joined in a marathon. She arrived at the finish line after 90 minutes.
If this time is the third quartile, then what does it imply?
5. In a certain community, there are 1000 residents. If the number of infected
people of COVID-19 is in Q1 already, then how many are not yet infected?

What I Have Learned

Directions: Supply the needed information in the blanks below. Write your answer on
a separate sheet of paper.
1. ______are the score points which divide a distribution into 4 equal parts.
2. ________ is called the lower quartile.
3. Q1<Q2<Q3, where ___ is nothing but the median.
4. Twenty-five percent (25%) of the distribution are below the ____.
5. In interpreting quartiles, you will look into the correct percentage equivalent to
Q1, Q2, and Q3 which are 25%, ____, and 75% respectively. Then discuss the
meaning of the obtained position.

4
What I Can Do

Directions: Read and understand the problem. Answer it logically and write your
solution and answer in your journal.

1. A certain FM station “A” has a low number of listeners. 75% of all country
stations in the Philippines have more listeners than this station.

Let the data set “L” consist of the number of listeners for each country
station in the Philippines and let “M” be the data set of the number of listeners
of station A. Using a diagram, show the percentage comparing number of
listeners between A and the other radio stations in the country. Then give the
interpretation.

5
Lesson
Interpreting Deciles
2

What I Need to Know

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to interpret deciles.

What’s In

In the first lesson of this module, you have learned how to illustrate and interpret
quartiles. It is important to master them because this skill is very useful in your next
lesson. This lesson will teach you how to interpret deciles. But before you interpret the
specified Decile measures, you first need to go back on how Deciles are illustrated.

DECILE For this Decile Percentage

1st decile D1 10%
2nd decile D2 20%
3rd decile D3 30%
4th decile D4 40%
5th decile D5 50%
6th decile D6 60%
7th decile D7 70%
8th decile D8 80%
9th decile D9 90%
10th decile D10 (maximum) 100%

Deciles are percentiles that split the data into groups of 10%. Meaning, every
decile contains 10% of the data.

And now, are you ready to interpret deciles? Good luck and enjoy!

6
What’s New

Let’s Explore

1. What percent is equivalent to D9?

2. Ryan is the vice president in a big company. His salary is in the 8th decile.
Should Ryan be glad about his salary or not? Explain your answer.

Solution:
In item no. 1, you are asked to get the equivalent percentage of the
ninth decile. But how to do it?
 First, you need to illustrate deciles. In the previous module, you
learned that deciles divide the whole distribution into ten equal
parts. So, we have the decile 1, decile 2, decile 3,…, decile 9.
 Since the whole data set or distribution is equal to 100%, so we
can say that each decile is equivalent to 10%. So what do you
think is the percentage equivalent to D 9 or the decile 9?
 Since decile 9 is the 9th decile, therefore D9 is equal to 90%.

In item No. 2, you are asked to conclude whether Ryan should be

pleased with his salary or not. How will you do it?
 First, you are going to determine the equivalent of decile 8. You
learned from your previous module that decile 8 is equivalent to
80% since it is the 8th decile.
 Next is to interpret the meaning of the information that Ryan’s
salary is in the 8th decile. It means that 80% of the company’s
workers have salary less than or equal to Ryan’s salary.
 Lastly, you are going to conclude whether Ryan should be happy
of his salary or not. From the given information, Ryan should be
pleased of his salary because he received higher salary than 80%
of his co-workers. There are only 20% of them receiving a salary
greater than his.
 If there are 100 working staff in the company, then there are 80
workers receiving lower salary than Ryan and only 20 of them are
receiving a higher salary than him.

How is your activity? Do you follow how to illustrate and then interpret deciles?
If you are still confused, do not worry because we will discuss the lesson in detail. But
before that, try to answer the next activity.

Let’s Try This

Answer the following questions:

1. What percent is equivalent to D5?

2. Instructor Yumi gave a test to her students in Statistics. The students finished
the test in 20 minutes. This time is the 3rd decile of the allotted time. What does
this mean?

7
What is It

In interpreting deciles, you will look into the correct percentage equivalent to
D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7, D8 and D9. it is very easy to remember their percentage since
each decile contains the 10% of the distribution. Hence, when we say D 1 it contains
10% of the distribution, D2 contains 20% of the distribution and so on. You can refer to
the illustration stated at the “What’s New” section of this lesson. Then discuss the
meaning of the obtained position.

Comprehensive Discussion:
Let’s go back to Problem No. 1 in page 7:
Problem no. 1: What percent is equivalent to D5?
STEP FIGURE/ DISCUSSION
EXPRESSION/
EQUATION
1. Illustrate D1, D2, D3, … D9  You learned that Deciles are the
Decile nine score points which divide a
distribution into ten equal parts.
They are denoted by D1, D2, D3, …
D9.
2.Identify D5 = 50%  Ten percent (10%) of the
the distribution are below the first
equivalent decile, twenty percent (20%) of the
of D5. distribution are below the second
decile, thirty percent (30%) are
below the third decile and so on
until ninth decile.
3.Write the  Therefore, D5 is equivalent to 50%.
equivalent D5 = 50%
of D5

And now let’s take a look at Problem No. 2 on page 7:

Problem no. 2: Instructor Yumi gave a test to her students in Statistics. The
students finished the test in 20 minutes. This time is the 3rd decile of the allotted
time. What does this mean?
STEP FIGURE/ DISCUSSION
EXPRESSION/
EQUATION
1. Identify Given:  Given in the problem.
the given 20 minutes, D3
2. Identify D3 = 30%  30% is the equivalent of D3. Hence,
the in interpreting 20 minutes of the
equivalent of allotted time, we must use 30%.
D3
3. Write the  This means that the learners
interpretation D3 = 20% = 20 finished the test within 30% of the
minutes allotted time.

8
 You can say it is good, because it
means that the students finished
the test in a short period of time.
 If we will examine deeper, it is
understood that the teacher gave
the learners around 70 minutes to
finish the test. Gladly, the students
finished it in just 20 minutes. It
means to say that the learners did
the test in a short period of time.

Did you find the activity helpful and fun? Hope you learned a lot. The next
activity will help you learn more about this lesson. Enjoy while learning! You can do it.

What’s More

Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is true. Otherwise, write

FALSE. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1. D2 corresponds to 50%.
2. The median score is also the 5th decile.
3. Each decile contains 10% of the distribution.
4. If your score in a test is in the third decile, then 70% of your classmates
got a score lower than yours.
5. If your weight is in the 7th decile, then 70% of your classmates weigh
lighter than you.
6. In a test, if every student’s score is in the 8th decile, then everybody
surpassed the passing mark which is 75%.
7. Diana joined a swimming contest. She finished the race in 12 minutes.
If this time is the first decile, then she raced faster than 75% of the rest
of the swimmers
8. A neighboring village has 500 households. If 100 of these households
have member/s already positive with Corona virus, then the number of
households negative with COVID is in D8.
9. In Economics test the 7th decile score is 15. If the passing mark is 75%,
then the students should answer at least 15 items correctly to pass the
test.
10. Aling Maria earned Php2,500.00 every week in her sari-sari store. If this
amount corresponds to D1, then 10% of other sari-sari store owners
earned higher than her.

9
What I Have Learned

Directions: Supply the correct information in the blanks. Write your answer on a
separate sheet of paper.
1. _____ are the nine score points which divide a distribution into ten equal
parts.
2. Each decile distribution contains ___ of the distribution.
3. ____ of the distribution are below the ninth decile.
4. Twenty percent (20%) of the distribution are below the_________.
5. In interpreting deciles, look into the correct percentage equivalent to D1, D2, D3,
…, D9 which are 10%, 20%, _____,…, 90%. Then discuss the meaning of the
obtained position.

What I Can Do

Directions: Read and understand the problem. Write your solution and answer in
your journal.

The Social Amelioration Program (SAP) is the Philippine government’s

emergency subsidy program for more than 20 million Filipino families to aid
financial needs during the COVID pandemic.

Let “A” be the set of number of families who received Php8, 000. 00 and
let “B” be the set of the number of families who received Php6, 000. 00. Using
a diagram, show the percentage of A against B if set A is in the 6 th decile.

Lesson
Interpreting Percentiles
3
What I Need to Know

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to interpret percentiles.

What’s In

In lesson 2, you learned how to interpret deciles. You need to illustrate and
calculate them first and then interpret the result. And now, you are going to interpret
percentiles. You will interpret exactly the same way as what you did to quartiles and
deciles. The only difference are the equivalent percentages. But before you interpret
the specified Percentile measures, you first need to go back on how they are
illustrated.
PERCENTILE For this Percentile Percentage
st
1 Percentile P1 1%
2nd Percentile P2 2%
rd
3 Percentile P3 3%
… … …
th
100 Percentile P100 (maximum) 100%
Percentiles indicate the percentage of scores that fall below a particular value.
They tell you where a score stands relative to other scores.

To illustrate more, let us compare the three measures of position.

Q1 Q2 Q3
P25 P50 P75

P10 P20 P40 P60 P70 P80 P90

D7 D5
D1 D2 D3 D4 D5 D6 D7 D8 D9
As you can
see, Q1 = P25, Q2 = P50, Q3 = P75. Moreover, D1 = P10, D2 = P20, D3 = P30, D4 = P40, D5 =
P50, D6 = P60, D7 = P70, D8 = P80, D9 = P90.
And now, are you ready to interpret percentiles?
11
What’s New

Let’s Explore

1. Teacher Mary gave a test to her students in Geometry. The students finished
the test in 35 minutes. This time is the 70th percentile of the allotted time. What
does this mean?
2. James is a cashier in a certain bakery in Northern Mindanao. His salary is in
the 40th percentile. Should James be glad about his salary or not? Explain.

Solution:
In item No. 1, you are going to investigate the significance of the 70th
percentile of the allotted time for students to finish the test. What could be the
important information we can get if the students finished the test in the 70th
percentile time? How to do it?
 First, you need to identify the equivalent percentage of the 70th
percentile. You learned from your previous module that the70th
percentile is equivalent to 70%.
 After determining the equivalent percentage of the 70th percentile,
you can now say that 70% of the allotted time to finish the test is
35 minutes.
 Next is to interpret the meaning of the information given in which
the students finished the test in 35 minutes if this time is the 70 th
percentile of the allotted time.
 You can state that the students finish the test within 70% of the
allotted time and that is 35 minutes out of 50 minutes. Also, since
the students finished the test before the allotted time then that it
is a good indicator that the students are prepared for the test.

In item No. 2, you are asked to conclude whether James be pleased

with his salary or not. How will you do it?
 First, you are going to determine the equivalent percentage of the
40th percentile. You learned from your previous module that the
40th percentile is equivalent to 40%.
 Next is to interpret the meaning of the information that James’s
salary is in the 40th percentile. It means that 40% of the bakery’s
workers have salary less than or equal to James.
 Lastly, you are going to conclude whether James should be
happy about his salary or not. From the given information, James
is not so happy with his salary because 60% of his co-workers
receive higher salary than him.
 If there are 100 working staff in the company, then there are 40
workers receiving lower salary than James and 60 of them are
receiving a higher salary than him.

How is your activity? Do you follow how to illustrate and then interpret
percentiles? If you are still confused, do not worry because we will discuss the
lesson in detail. But before that, try to answer the next activity.

Let’s Try This

Answer the following questions:

1. Rendel is the CEO of a big company in Davao City. His salary is in the 90th
percentile. Should Rendel be glad about his salary or not? Explain your answer.
2. The table below shows the hourly wages (in pesos) of the 50 workers in the
Paradise Farm.

Class Interval f LB <cf

134-139 10 133.5 50
128-133 9 127.5 40
122-127 8 121.5 31
116-121 1 115.5 23
110-115 5 109.5 22
104-109 2 103.5 17
98-103 9 97.5 15
92-97 5 91.5 6
86-91 1 85.5 1
N=50

Interpret the value of P80.

What is It

In interpreting percentiles, you will look into the correct

percentage equivalent to P1, P2, P3, …P99. It is very easy to remember their percentage
since each percentile contains the 1% of the distribution. Hence, when we say P 1 it
also equals to 1%, P2 contains 2% and so on. In other words, percentiles determine
the value for 1%, 2%, 3%, …, 99% of the data. P30 or 30th percentile of the data means
30% of the data have values less than or equal to P30. You can refer to the illustration
stated at the “What’s New” section of this lesson. Then discuss the meaning of the
obtained position.

13
Comprehensive Discussion:

Let’s go back to the Problem No. 1 in page 13:

Problem no. 1: Rendel is the CEO of a big company in Davao City. His
salary is in the 90th percentile. Should Rendel be glad about his salary or
not? Explain your answer.

STEP FIGURE/ DISCUSSION

EXPRESSION/
EQUATION
1.Identify the Given:  Given in the problem.
given Rendel’s salary
is in the 90th
percentile
2.Identify the P90 = 90%  P90 is equivalent to 90%. This problem
equivalent of requires you to inspect whether Rendel
P90 should be glad about his salary or not.
To do this, you need to note first that P90
means 90% of Rendel’s co-workers
receive a salary less than what he has
received.
3.Write the P90 =  This means that 90% of the employees
interpretation 90%=Rendel’s receive salary that is less than or equal
salary to his salary and 10% of the employees
receive a salary that is higher than his
salary. Rendel should be pleased with
his salary.
 If there are 100 employees in this
company, then there are 90 workers
receiving less salary than Rendel. It
also means that out of 100 workers,
there are only 10 of them receiving
higher salary than him. With these
information, you can clearly say that
Rendel should be happy about his
salary.

14
Now let us go over Problem No. 2 on page 13:
Problem no. 2: The table below shows the hourly wages (in pesos) of the 50
workers in the Paradise Farm.
Class Interval F LB <cf
134-139 10 133.5 50
128-133 9 127.5 40
122-127 8 121.5 31
116-121 1 115.5 23
110-115 5 109.5 22
104-109 2 103.5 17
98-103 9 97.5 15
92-97 5 91.5 6
86-91 1 85.5 1
N=50
Interpret the value of P80.
STEP FIGURE/ DISCUSSION
EXPRESSION/
EQUATION
1.Calculate 80𝑁  To interpret the value of P80, we
𝑃80 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠:
the value of 100 need to calculate its value first.
P80 80(50)  By using the formula in
= 40
100 calculating the value of
P80 class: 128-133
percentile measure, we
Given: LB=127.5
N=50, cfb=31
obtained 133. 50.
𝑖 = 6, 𝑓𝑄3 = 9
𝑘𝑁
− 𝑐𝑓𝑏
𝑃𝑘 = 𝐿𝐵 + [ 100 ]𝑖
𝑓𝑃𝑘
40 − 31
𝑃80 = 127.5 + [ ]6
9
𝑃80 = 133.5
2.Identify the Given:  80% is the equivalent of P80.
equivalent of P80 = 80% Hence, in interpreting
P80 Php133.50 hourly wage, we
must use the figure 80%.
3.Write the P80 = 80%=Php133.50  This means that 80% of the
interpretation workers have an hourly wage
of Php133.50 and below.
 If we will examine deeper, then
80% the population of the
workers in the Paradise Farm
receive an hourly wage of
Php133.50 and below and the
remaining 20% of the workers
earn above Php133.50 every
hour.
 If there are 50 workers in the
farm, then there are 40 workers
receiving an hourly wage worth
Php133.50 and the rest 10
workers are earning more than
Php133.50 every hour.

What I Can Do

1. ABS-CBN TV Network’s shutdown created noise in the social media. Not only the
over 11, 000 workers of the network were stunned but many “kapamilya” also were
saddened.

a. In your own opinion what might be the effects of this crisis? Create a concept
map showing the effects to the staffs, workers, televiewers and to the
economy.
b. If P15 represents number of kapamilya televiewers in the Philippines, then
what percent represents number of Filipino televiewers of the rest of the TV
networks in the country? Use a diagram to show your answer.
