Assignment 1
Children can achieve their goals form doing too much trying and trust themselves in performance when
they grow up, but there are drawbacks to be considered. Motivating children by telling them that
everything can be achieved by dedication is a common trend in various cultures. This tradition brings
self-confidence and motivation among children, but it also has few demerits, like incapability to accept
failures in upcoming age.
The first benefit of telling children it is possible to achieve everything if they try hard enough is that
children will get use to putting all effort into what they do which helps them easier to reach their targets
in the future. This is due to the fact that youngsters usually look up to and listen to adults, especially
their parents and relatives so they will do what they are told. After a period of time, they will familiar
with hard-working and that habit will help them on their future path. In addition, this message also
brings hopes to the ones who have bad backgrounds or disabilities. They can set successful people
coming up from nothing as examples, feeling the inspirations and overcoming all the barriers. Some
people benefit from a positive emphasis on effort and achievement. The best examples of this come
from the United States where famously every child is encouraged to pursue their dreams, no matter
how aspirational and unrealistic. Those who succeed serve as role models and evidence the efficacy of
pushing children to try to achieve anything. For example, the number of successful entrepreneurs and
artists who have left their mark globally from the U.S.A is staggering and includes figures like Steve
Jobs, Bill Gates, Michael Jackson, Warren Buffet, and Will Smith. These people often give encouraging
interviews where they reiterate the importance of having passion and grit to achieve transcendent
fame.
On the one hand, telling children that they can make anything happen through hard work can harm
their mental health. They are too young to be mentally strong enough to face the failures they meet
while chasing their goal. They may end up falling into self-doubt that in turn decreases their confidence.
With this message, youngsters will think they can achieve anything, even which are truly beyond their
abilities. As a result, they keep wasting time concentrating in one thing that they may never achieve
rather than spend time on more deserved things. In the situation where they can’t achieve goals, they
will blame themselves and doubt their abilities. For example, research done on suicidal causes among
students proves that, this practice is common in students who are always high achievers in their past,
and are unaware how to deal with failures. So, when they enter in practical life and face any failures, it
results in depression and suicidal attempts.
To recapitulate, I would like to say that, although this practice brings positivity in young children, we
cannot ignore its huge drawbacks on mental health. Children should be counselled about success as
well as failures too. Population from some cultures often tell their children, if they work toughly, they will
achieve their purpose can be either useful or dangerous. To my point of view occasionally telling this
kind of sentences help children to focus on their goal.
