1) When a DC machine is driven at speed of 1170 r/min, its open circuit voltage (va) is measured for
a set of values of field current (if) giving the following results:

What torque will this machine develop with a field current of 0.7 A and an armature current of 25

Answer: 61.8 N.m

2) A permanent magnet DC motor produces a torque of 8 N.m with an armature current of 10 A. The
armature circuit resistance is 0.16 Ω. If this motor is to drive a mechanical load requiring a torque
of 20 N.m at a speed of 1800 rpm, what must be the voltage applied to the armature terminals?

Answer: 154.8 V

3) The machine of Problem 2 is to drive a load that requires a torque that is proportional to its speed.
One point on the mechanical torque-speed relation is 16 N.m at 400 rpm. If the armature terminal
voltage is 50 V, at what steady-state speed will the load be driven?

Answer: 57.1 rad/s

4) An industrial drive consist of a dc motor with its armature supplied from a variable-voltage source.
As this voltage is varied from 0 to 600 V, the drive speed is to vary from 0 to 1600 r/min, the field
flux being maintained constant. All losses may be ignored.
a) Determine the armature current if the load torque is held constant at 420 N.m.
b) A load is to be driven in the speed range from 1600 to 4000r/min by a weakening the field
flux while the armature voltage is held constant at 600 V. Determine the torque available at
maximum speed if the armature current of (a) is not to be exceeded.

Answer: a) 117.3 A, b) 168 N.m

5) A 10-Kw, 230-V, 1800-rpm, DC shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.25 Ω, and its
rotational losses may be assumed constant at 600 W. The field resistance is adjusted until the
motor runs at 2000 rpm on no load. Determine the speed when the motor drives a load requiring
%85 of the rated output torque.

Answer: 1904 rpm.

6) A load requiring a constant torque of 30 N.m is driven by a series motor from a 200-V source. The
combined resistance of the armature and field is 0.3 Ω. When tested at standstill, the motor
produces a shaft torque of 10 N.m at a current of 25 A. Further tests show that motor has
negligible magnetic saturation up to a current of about 50 A. Determine the speed at which the
load is driven.

Answer: 2578 rpm
