UNIT I

INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

In this lesson, the learners will be able to:

1. Describe how communication is influenced by media and information

2. Identify the similarities and differences between and among media literacy, information literacy,
and technology literacy

PROCEDURE

In today’s lesson it embodies your essential knowledge that will allow you to
engage with media and information channels in a meaningful manner.

Before we go to the discussion I have here a pre-activity, all you have to do is to think of
the past week, and record your use and interaction with media and information
providers (such as internet, social media, TV, radio, newspaper, etc.). Indicate how
many hours were spent engaged with each one. These do not have to be exact, and
you can estimate the number of hours you spend each week.

( So merun po akong prepared na table then ilalagay nyo sa unang table ay kung
anong Media Provider ang ginamit nung nakaraang lingo then ilang oras mo sya
nagamit) For Example:

Weekly Interaction Log with Information and Information Providers

Media or Information Provider Numbers of hours in a week
YouTube 3 hours
Facebook 12 hours
Television 20 hours
Books 10 hours
Others
After you completed the table above, you should answer the following questions.

• Which Media provider did you spend most of the time?

• What roles of that media to your daily lives?
buhay mo?)

In this activity malalaman natin kung ano ba yung role ng Media sa buhay natin, gaano
ba kahalaga yung pag gamit ng Media or technology or marunong ba talaga tayong
gumamit nito. And that has something to do with our lesson.

Let’s start with Communication, What is Communication?

- The act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to

express or exchange information or to express your ideas,
thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else.
- The exchange of information and the expression of feeling that can
result in understanding. (http://dictionary.cambridge.org)
 Meaning to say pag sinabi nating Communication that is the purposeful
exchange of information and messages between people or groups of people
through speaking, writing, gestures or signs.

 There are two types of communication. The Non-verbal communication and

Verbal Communication.
 NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION: (Signs, Symbols, Colors, Gestures, Body
language and Facial expressions) Examples: Nakikipag usap ka through Sign
Language so that is Non-verbal Communication , another one Binigyan mo ng
Rose si crush without saying anything, so that is non-verbal communication
because nag pahayag ka pa din ng iyong damdamin through the use of Rose
which symbolizes Love.
 VERBAL COMMUNICATION: (Oral and Written)
- It simply means use of language.

Next, let us know the process of communication.

PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION
There are at least five elements that characterize the communication
process:
• The indicators (the sender and the recipient of the message)
• The message or the information
• The medium
• The feedback or reactions, and
• The communication environment
o The indicators are both senders and recipients of the message, which
may include a person-to-person or group-to-group level of communication
o The message is the information or the verbal and nonverbal message
being conveyed to another person or group of people.
o The medium is the channel through which the message is coursed.
o The feedback or reaction is the response to a message or behavior.
o The communication environment is the context in which the
communication takes place

So how is communicating affected by media and information?

[Communication was affected by media and information because media is the tool that
we can use for communication. Through media, communication takes place in a faster
and effective way. Information that is the knowledge or the content of communication,
without information there is no communication takes place.]
Based on what we have seen in the picture, pag sinabi nating Media that
is the tools used to communicate.

(For example, using cellphone mas madali tayong nakakapag search ng

over the use of internet. Through the use of television na iinform tayo sa kung
magazines.,etc.)
Then pag sinabi naman natin na Communication that is the process kung
paano tayo nakakatanggap at nakakapagbigay ng information.
Then Information, that is the knowledge or the content used in the
communication process.
So in that case, in communication process hindi dapat mawala si
information kasi yun yung content na kailangan mo as well as the media kasi yun
yung medium mo nagagamitin to deliver or to get the information in a faster way.

In this lesson, you will be exposed to the differences between Media

Literacy, Information Literacy, and Technology Literacy.

Activity: REAL or FAKE!

Directions: Identify which of the following is fake news. Put an X mark on the space if
you think it’s Real or Fake:

___Real ___Fake ___Real ___Fake

___Real ___Fake ___Real ___Fake

atin because we are now reliant on it.
Now let us learn ano ba yung kahalagahan ng pag gamit ng Media, Information
and ng Technology. )

Let’s start with this term.

Following are various terms associated with Media Information and Literacy.

• Literacy: The ability to identify, understand, interpret, create,

communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with
varying contexts. Literacy involves a continuum of learning, wherein individuals
are able to achieve their goals, develop their knowledge and potential, and
participate fully in their community and wider society.
- In other word that is the ability to read and write.

- People with good literacy skills are more likely to have:

 Higher self-esteem
 Better health
 Better job
 Higher wages
This is because they are more able to take advantage of the opportunities that
life may offer them.

• Media: The physical objects used to communicate with, or the mass communication
through physical objects such as radio, television, computers, film, etc. It also refers to
any physical object used to communicate messages.

• Media Literacy: The ability to access, analyzes, evaluate, and create media in a
variety of forms. It aims to empower citizens by providing them with the competencies
(knowledge and skills) necessary to engage with traditional media and new
technologies.
“These skills include being able to access media on a basic level , to analyze it in
a critical way based on certain key concepts, to evaluate it based on that analysis and,
finally , to produce media by oneself. This process of learning media literacy skills is
media education”(Media Literacy Fundamentals)

(Meaning to say you are knowledgeable on how to use media. And to be a media

Importance of Media literacy

The digital has made it easy for us to create media. We do not always know who
created something and why they made it and whether it is credible or not. This makes
media literacy an essential skill in the digital ages. Specifically, it helps us:
 Become a smart customer of product and information
 Learn to think critically
 Recognize point of view
 Create media responsibly
 Identify the role of media in our culture
 Understand the type of influence made media and how we can make informed
choices.
• Information: A broad term that covers processed data, knowledge derived from study,
experience, instruction, signals or symbols.

• Information Literacy: The ability to recognize when information is needed and use it
efficiently, hence you must be able to locate, evaluate, and effectively communicate
information in its various formats.

(As an information literate alam mo kung kailan, saan at kung paano gagamitin
yung information na hinahanap mo or nahanap mo.
yun bang information na nakuha mo is factual or not.)

(There are three marks to become a literate person, first, you must have a long
social vision, second, you must be motivated life-long learner and lastly, you must
know how to find and use information in various contexts.)
Importance of Information Literacy
 To be able to distinguish which among the sources of information are relevant
 An individual will be able to organize and classify the difference forms of media
which can be used to secure relevant and substantial information.
 Aid students in developing effective research skills.

• Technology Literacy: The ability of an individual, either working independently or with

others, to responsibly, appropriately, and effectively use technological tools. Using
these tools an individual can access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create and
communicate information.

(It is the responsible and effective means of using technological tools in order to
meet one’s goal in acquiring and using the right information. So you are technology
literate once na merun kang skills in computer network, you have knowledge of basic
principles of computing devices, and you have an ability to engage in online community.
Importance of Technology Literacy
 With the new technological discoveries and breakthroughs, people nowadays are
even hoping to find cure for dreaded incurable illness.
 It will save valuable time and help one do things smoothly.

• Media and Information Literacy: The essential skills and competencies that allow
individuals to engage with media and other information providers effectively, as well as
develop critical thinking and life-long learning skills to socialize and become active
citizens.

All of the “news” in the Real/Fake Activity are fake news. Below are tips on how
to counter fake news.
