Situation Analysis:
Wendy Peterson is hardworking, approachable, and zealous about her work. She is often described
as a doer and if she has the opportunity she doesn’t only help but takes charge of the situation. She
has a strategic approach and is not afraid to speak her mind. She likes real time updates and has a
hands-on approach which is not liked by everyone. One time when a veteran employee resisted her
coaching and asked some tough questions about her initiatives, she fired him. When she advocates
some changes to be made in the organization she does it without taking the opinions of her
employees.

Fred Xing Wu is born and educated in China and migrated to United States for college where he
graduated in business and economics. He was hired despite not having any sales experience, as he
had good access to the Account Back’s target market in China and Peterson wanted to break into the
Chinese market. In the first month of his job Wu arrived early and stayed late, engaged with his
colleagues to find out about the sales process, client services, and sales resources. He also helped
everyone to use the new online sales management tool after his colleagues expressed frustration
with it.

Wendy and Wu had contrasting work styles. Wendy preferred a more rigid structure and almost
micro manages her employees. Wu, may be because of his entrepreneurial background preferred
working in his own way. He was a private person who wanted to keep work and personal life
separate. Wendy had some objections with how Wu was operating as it was in contrast with the way
the company usually operates.

Wendy was taken aback when Wu had requested for a personal assistant. It is unprecedented and
only successful senior sales executives who had at least generated 30 sales deals had a personal
assistant. Wendy will have to look at all options before taking her decision. If she agrees to Wu’s
demands it might anger many and set a wrong precedent. If she does not agree then it might lead to
Wu leaving the organization which will be a loss of a talented employee who has brought one of the
largest accounts to the organization. She can try to find a middle ground. It involves careful
communication with him to find out the reason for his request, evaluating the merits of his
reasoning and the feasibility of its implementation and careful negotiation with him to get to a win-
win situation.
