1.4 Procedure
1.4.1 Inspection upon Receipt
CAUTION
Equipment Failure, Contamination, or Nuisance Shutdowns
Tipping the compressor more than 5 degrees from horizontal can cause oil to flow
into places where it can damage or contaminate the compressor.
Do not tip the compressor more than 5 degrees from horizontal.
CAUTION
Equipment Contamination
While inspecting for shipping damage, disconnecting the gas lines and coldhead
can contaminate these components with compressor oil.
Do not disconnect the gas lines or coldhead while inspecting for shipping damage.
If there is any evidence of external damage to the container, be sure the carrier’s driver
sees the damage. Note the damage on the shipping documents and have the driver
acknowledge it by initialing your notes on the delivery receipt.
a. The Charge Pressure of the compressor unit can be checked from the outside of the
shipping container without removing the packaging.
b. Look through the “peep hole” on the container, and view the pressure gauge on the
front panel of the compressor. The gauge should indicate a pressure above 10 bar (145
psi). If the pressure is significantly low, follow the Defect On Arrival (DOA) procedure.
3. Inspect the Tip-N-Tell sensor on the package. The sensor indicates whether the compressor
was tipped or mishandled during transport.
a. Check the Tip-N-Tell sensor mounted on the shipping container surface before
unpackaging.
b. If activated, the Tip-N-Tell sensor turns blue in the arrow as shown below. Proceed with
internal inspection.
b. Remove the packing cover shell and the top inside cushions.
c. Insert and tighten the three furnished eyebolts into the top of the compressor.
1 Eyebolt locations
WARNING
PERSONAL INJURY OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT!
THE SUMITOMO F-70H COMPRESSOR WEIGHS APPROXIMATELY 220
POUNDS (100 KG).
USE A HOIST OR OTHER LIFTING DEVICE TO LIFT THE COMPRESSOR.
d. The shipping container may contain a ramp that allows the compressor to be rolled off
of the shipping container. If the container has such a ramp, use it to remove the
compressor from the wooden base of the shipping container. Otherwise, carefully lift
the compressor off of the wooden base using a hoist or other lifting device.
NOTE: If they are usable, retain the shipping containers for returning the components
to the factory if reconditioning is required. If you suspect there is internal damage
to the compressor, retain the shipping container as proof of the damage for the
carrier.
e. Retain the parts of the reusable shipping container for possible reuse. This includes
the wooden base with Ethafoam cushion blocks, the packaging cover shell and the top
inside cushions.
CAUTION
Equipment Contamination
While inspecting for shipping damage, disconnecting the gas lines and coldhead
can contaminate these components with compressor oil.
Do not disconnect the gas lines or coldhead while inspecting for shipping damage.
b. If there is external damage to the compressor, remove the compressor unit panels and
check for internal damage. Notify the carrier immediately and take photographs of the
damage to document your claim to the carrier.
c. If any irrecoverable damage is found (e.g., oil leakage or panel deformation), follow the
Defect On Arrival (DOA) procedure.
NOTICE
The facility coolant supply to the old compressor must be turned off before
disconnecting its coolant lines.
DANGER
ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD!
IMPROPERLY DISCONNECTING OR CONNECTING POWER TO THE
CRYOCOOLER COMPRESSOR MAY RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH.
LOCK OUT AND TAG OUT THE POWER SOURCE FOR THE CRYOCOOLER
COMPRESSOR BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE COMPRESSOR’S POWER
CABLE FROM THE MAIN DISCONNECT PANEL (MDP). IN SOME SYSTEMS,
THE MDP IS KNOWN AS THE MAIN DISCONNECT CONTROL (MDC).
4. Disconnect the cryocooler compressor’s power cable from the Main Disconnect Panel (MDP).
On some systems, this panel may be called the Main Disconnect Control (MDC). If the power
cable is connected to the MDP/MDC with screw terminals, note which wires from the cable are
connected to which terminal.
5. Disconnect the compressor main power cord from the compressor. This cord will not be reused.
Refer to the appropriate compressor manual.
6. Disconnect the MagMon cable from the compressor. Then disconnect cable run 833 from the
main cable run 827. (Run 833 is between the main run 827 and the compressor’s diagnostic
port. This cable will not be reused and should be disposed of properly.
7. On the equipment room side of the penetration panel, remove the cover for the coldhead cable
terminals.
8. Observe and note the configuration of the coldhead cable attached to the terminals on the
equipment room side of the penetration panel. (See Illustration 3.) Note the four colored wires
and the terminals to which they are attached. The same configuration will be used with the
new coldhead cable and the F-70H compressor.
9. Remove the existing coldhead cable between the penetration panel and the compressor. Refer
to the appropriate compressor manual. This cable will not be reused. Dispose of the cable
properly. The Sumitomo F-70H compressor uses coldhead cable 5428187 (part of kit
5428192). See the following illustration.
3 5 mm ground stud (green lead) 7 Cable run 624 (penetration panel to coldhead – use ex‐
isting cable
4 Ring terminal (supplied on cable) 8 Cable from compressor to penetration panel – replace
with new cable (5428187)
NOTE: Wear nitrile gloves for the following step. Place towels under the coolant fittings on the
compressor to catch dripping coolant.
10. Identify and label the water supply and return lines (for water cooled compressors). Disconnect
the compressor cooling water connections at the compressor interface. If they are in good
condition, these hoses will be used with the new F-70H compressor. Minimize water spills and
take precautions to contain the discharge. Refer to the appropriate compressor manual for
more information.
11. Inspect the water hoses for cracks and other defects. Replace them if necessary.
12. Identify and label the coldhead gas connections (supply and return).
13. Disconnect the coldhead gas SUPPLY (high pressure) line. Cap the hose to prevent it from
becoming contaminated. Refer to the appropriate compressor manual for more information.
(Note that this hose will be attached to the new F-70H compressor.)
14. Disconnect the coldhead gas RETURN (low pressure) line. Cap the hose to prevent it from
becoming contaminated. Refer to the appropriate compressor manual for more information.
(Note that this hose will be attached to the new F-70H compressor.)
15. Depressurize the compressor adsorber following the instructions in the “Depressurizing
Cryocooler Items for Disposal” section of the Magnet and Cryogens Subsystem manual for the
system. The compressor itself is being sent to its manufacturer and does not require
depressurization.
NOTE: You will be provided with an appropriate shipping container to return the old compressor.
16. Remove the old compressor from the equipment room. Pack the old compressor in the
provided shipping container, and send it to the address provided on the container.
• Place the compressor in a location that is protected from the elements and where the
ambient temperature will always be 40 to 104° F (4 to 40° C).
• Install the compressor base down, within 5° of horizontal, and preferably at a height
convenient for making connections and reading the pressure gauge.
• Allow 24 inches (600 mm) in front of the compressor for access to electrical, water, and
gas connections. Allow 24 inches (600 mm) on the left side of the compressor (when
facing the front of the compressor) for maintenance of the adsorber.
CAUTION
Possible Equipment Damage
Coolant remaining in the cooling circuit can damage the compressor if it is shipped
or stored.
Thoroughly drain coolant from the cooling circuit if the compressor is being shipped
or stored. For more information, see the “Coolant Draining” procedure in the Service
Methods manual for the system.
NOTE: Wear nitrile gloves for the next step. Place a towel under the coolant supply and
return lines to catch incidental coolant drips.
Using two wrenches, connect the coolant supply and return lines to the Water In and Water
Out fittings on the front of the compressor. See the following illustration. Ensure that the
Water In connection is connected to the supply line from the customer’s cooling water or
coolant supply. See the Cooling Requirements section of the F-70H manual for more
information.
1 Hold hex with one wrench 2 Turn water line coupling with the other wrench
4. Turn on the coolant and check the water lines for leaks. Tighten the fittings if necessary.
5. Make sure the compressor is wired for the correct voltage. There are four possible voltage
taps: 380V, 400V, 415V, and 480V. The compressor is factory set for 400V3~.
DANGER
ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD!
OPENING ELECTRICAL ENCLOSURES, PERFORMING ELECTRICAL
CHECKS, OR PERFORMING TESTS WITH POWER SUPPLY CONNECTED
AND WIRING EXPOSED POSES A ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD.
ONLY QUALIFIED ELECTRICAL TECHNICIANS ARE TO PERFORM THESE
PROCEDURES.
CAUTION
Possible Equipment Damage
If the compressor is wired for 400 V3~, 50 Hz (400 ± 10%) electrical service,
connecting it to a higher voltage may damage its control circuit. Similarly, if the
compressor is wired for 480 V3~, 60 Hz, it can be damaged by connecting to
400 V3~.
Make sure the compressor wiring is set for the correct voltage.
a. At the voltage selection access panel on the front of the compressor, remove the plastic
cover to expose the voltage selection connectors.
b. Move the exposed connector half from the incorrect voltage tap connector to the
connector labeled for the correct supply voltage. Make sure the connector latches into
place. See the following illustration.
c. Replace the clear plastic window covering the voltage supply connectors.
DANGER
ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD!
IMPROPERLY DISCONNECTING OR CONNECTING POWER TO THE
CRYOCOOLER COMPRESSOR MAY RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH.
LOCK OUT AND TAG OUT THE POWER SOURCE FOR THE CRYOCOOLER
COMPRESSOR BEFORE CONNECTING THE COMPRESSOR’S POWER
CABLE TO THE MAIN DISCONNECT PANEL (MDP). IN SOME SYSTEMS, THE
MDP IS KNOWN AS THE MAIN DISCONNECT CONTROL (MDC).
DANGER
ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD!
OPENING ELECTRICAL ENCLOSURES, PERFORMING ELECTRICAL
CHECKS, OR PERFORMING TESTS WITH POWER SUPPLY CONNECTED
AND WIRING EXPOSED POSES A ELECTRICAL SHOCK HAZARD.
ONLY QUALIFIED ELECTRICAL TECHNICIANS ARE TO PERFORM THESE
PROCEDURES.
6. The main power supply cable for the compressor (5428185) has a plug for the front of the
compressor and a three-phase plug on the other end. If there is a three-phase socket for the
cryocooler compressor on the MDP or MDC, use that socket. If there are screw terminals for
compressor power on the MDP or MDC, cut the three-phase plug off of the power cable and
wire it to the terminals.
7. Connect the main power supply cable (5428185) to the main power receptacle on the
compressor and fasten cover with attached screws.
8. Check compressor’s operation before installing helium supply and return gas lines:
c. Set the compressor’s Main Power switch to On. Push the ON button.
d. While the compressor is running, lightly touch the water supply and return lines. The
return line (Water Out) should be warmer. If the return line is cooler than the supply
(Water In) line, stop the compressor and reverse the water connections. It will take
some time (ten minutes or so) for the difference in the line temperatures to become
noticeable.
WARNING
POSSIBLE INJURY FROM COMPRESSED GAS
THE GAS LINES MAY BE PRESSURIZED.
ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION WHEN HANDLING PRESSURIZED GAS
LINES AND OTHER PRESSURIZED EQUIPMENT. NEVER APPLY HEAT TO A
PRESSURIZED GAS LINE OR OTHER PRESSURIZED COMPONENTS.
CAUTION
Possible Equipment Damage
Repeatedly bending and repositioning gas lines may damage them.
Do not repeatedly bend gas lines. Do not bend gas lines with a bend radius smaller
than 7 inches (180 mm). Use supports for gas lines when needed to keep them
from bending.
NOTE: Be sure to have 99.999% pure helium gas available for installation of the new
compressor. See the Refrigerant Quality section in the Specifications chapter of the
F-70H manual.
a. Arrange the system components to that the gas lines will be protected from stress and
traffic. Observe the minimum bend radius of 7 inches (180 mm) when routing gas lines.
Provide supports where needed.
CAUTION
Possible Gas Leaks
Improperly fitting gas couplings can leak gas, causing the system to lose helium.
Before connecting the gas lines, check the condition of the gasket seals on each
Aeroquip fitting. Be sure the gasket seal is in place and the sealing surfaces on
both the male and female halves of the fitting are clean before connection.
Replace the gasket seal if it is damaged or missing.
Keep the gas line couplings aligned when making or breaking a coupling
connection. Leaks can occur due to the weight of the gas line or due to a sharp
bend near the connection.
NOTICE
Be sure to have 99.999% pure helium gas available for installation of the new
compressor. See the Refrigerant Quality section in the Specifications chapter
of the F70-H manual delivered with the F70-H compressor.
c. Connect the gas lines to the compressor’s high-pressure (Supply) and low-pressure
(Return) couplings. Use two wrenches to tighten the couplings. See the following
illustration. Tighten each coupling before proceeding to the next one.
NOTE: Retain dust caps and plugs used to cover the couplings. They protect
the couplings from damage and prevent contaminants from entering
the lines.
d. Check the couplings using leak detection fluid. If leaks are detected, tighten the
couplings.
e. Verify the compressor equalization (static) pressure is 10.9 to 11.1 bar (159 to 161 psi)
at 20° C (68° F). Charge or vent as necessary. See the F-70H manual for information.
10. Install the coldhead cable (5428187) between the penetration panel and the compressor:
a. Connect the coldhead cable to its terminals on the penetration panel. Connect them to
the same terminals that were used by the old coldhead cable (black to black, white to
white, red to red, and green (ground) to green).
b. Reinstall the cover for the coldhead cable terminals on the penetration panel.
c. Connect the other end of the coldhead cable to the coldhead receptacle on the front of
the compressor.
NOTICE
The compressor’s main power switch must be in the OFF position before changing
the setting of the mode selector switch. If the compressor is on when the switch
position is changed, the operation of the port will change but the change will not be
recorded by the controller. Loss of compressor control and incorrect indications will
result.
11. A female DB-25 port connector is located on the front of the compressor. This connector is
used for remote control and it supplies remote indication of the operating status of the
compressor. A mode selector switch sets the mode of operation for the DB-25 port.
a. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, set the mode selector switch to Mode 1 (switch handle
up). See the following illustration.
b. Connect the new MagMon cable (5199282) between the diagnostic port on the F-70H
compressor and MagMon cable run 827.
a. Check that the cooling water lines are connected and that the supply line is connected
to the coolant supply line. Turn on the coolant and check the lines for leaks. Tighten
the fittings if necessary. See the Cooling Requirements section of the F-70H manual
for more information.
c. Check that the DB-25 port switch is properly set (switch handle up – see Illustration
8).
d. Check that the electrical power supply to the compressor is switched on.
e. Check that the equalization pressure is as specified when the compressor is at room
temperature (68° F, 20° C). A higher or lower temperature will cause a higher or lower
change in the equalization pressure. If the pressure is far from the specified
equalization pressure, the gas charge is incorrect and may indicate a leak or incorrect
filling.
1.5 Finalization
1. Make sure the magnet returns to the specified pressure for the system.
2. Dispose of any coolant drained from the old compressor and towels used to wipe up coolant
by following local regulations for disposal of those items.
