SCI 312: Waves and Optics
1 Course Title Waves and Optics
2 Course Number SCI 312 3 Semester and Year 1st Semester, 3rd Year Offered 4 Credit Units 5 Units (3 Units Lecture and 2 Units Laboratory) 5 Contact Hours 162 Hours (54 Hours Lecture and 108 Hours Laboratory) 6 Pre-requisite/s (if SCI 223 any) 7 Co-requisite/s (if None any) 8 Course Description This course focuses on the fundamental concepts on mechanical and electromagnetic waves. It helps students demonstrate content knowledge and its application across curriculum teaching areas (1.1.1). It describes the production and propagation of waves, its characteristics, types, and properties. This course also gives emphasis on the nature and duality of light with emphasis on physical and geometric optics such as mirrors and lenses and how they affect the movement of light waves. Moreover, this discusses the applications of mirrors and lenses in modern society. Learning waves and optics allows the students to gain insights on the importance of waves in modern society and applies the concepts and principles in problem solving and daily activities.
The laboratory is closely related to lecture topics and
includes methods of classical experimentation as well as certain instrumental analysis. Laboratory experiments are given as inquiry-based activities as a Saint Louis University SCHOOL OF TEACHER EDUCATION AND LIBERAL ARTS Department of Professional Education
strategy in developing higher-order thinking skills
(1.5.1) and to supplement the content topics in the lecture. Such laboratory activities are contextualized using indigenous or local materials. To be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role of assessment data as feedback in teaching and learning practices (5.5.1), the students are expected to showcase their developed outputs which will be evaluated through performance-based assessment.
9 Course Learning In the context of the specific field of specialization,
Outcomes the students will be able to: 1. demonstrate content knowledge in Waves and Optics and its application across curriculum teaching areas in physical and biological sciences; (1.1.1) 2. perform contextualized experiments using indigenized or local materials to substantiate the understanding of the abstract theories in Waves and Optics; and (1.5.1) 3. design a lesson plan and a contextualized experiment as feedbacks in teaching and learning practices in Waves and Optics. (5.1.1) 10 Learners' Profile The students enrolled in this course are third year and Context college students coming from the different provinces in Luzon. Due to the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), students residing outside the City of Baguio are restricted to enter the city. After the lifting of the ECQ, it is anticipated that the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) will still restrict the students to go out. However, they may have access to an internet cafe for their electronic and internet- based activities. 11 Assessment and This course has formative and summative assessment Evaluation Details activities that will be administered in two modes: a. through printed and recorded materials that will be sent by means of express mail; and b. through Google Classroom and other applications in the Google Suite. The final requirements will be delivered through print
and through Google Classroom. 12 Monitoring Details For the students without internet connection but with computers or laptops at home, they will be monitored through: a. printed modules that are scheduled to be sent to them and to be submitted back as scheduled; b. telephone calls or short message services (SMS) at least once a week; and c. video recording using their smart phones that will showcase demonstration lessons in lecture and laboratory.
For the students with internet connection, they will be
monitored through the SLU student portal and through their participation in the Google Classroom Discussion Forum and online activities. 13 Technological The delivery of the course will require the use of the Support SLU subscribed Google Suite, SLU E-Learning Resources, and SLU Student Portal. It will also require the use of two (2) 16GB USB sticks that will be used to send the printed and recorded materials for the students without internet connections. The first USB stick will be used to send the first set of materials for the midterms and the second memory stick will be used to send the recorded materials for the finals. The same memory sticks will be used by the students to send back their outputs. 14 Course Budget The cost that will be included in the regular fees of the students will be the following: 2-16GB Memory Stick Php 500.00 x 2 = Php 1,000.00 Printed Materials = Php 1,500.00 Express Mail Services = Php 1,000.00 (depend on the distance) Total = Php 3,500.00 Saint Louis University SCHOOL OF TEACHER EDUCATION AND LIBERAL ARTS Department of Professional Education
