Instructions: Using A-4 or 8.5” x 11” size paper, solve the following neatly. Show all necessary solutions, drawings, free
body diagrams and assumptions clearly. Submit a scanned copy or a photo of your work in the
Google classroom on or before the specified time.

1. A pump draws water at (100 + 5A) liters/second from reservoir A and lifts it to reservoir B as shown in the figure
below. Determine the following if
i) The head losses from A to 1 and 2 to B are neglected and;
ii) The head loss from A to 1 is 2.5B times the velocity head in the 200-mm pipe and the
loss of head from 2 to B is 7A times the velocity head in the 150-mm pipe

a. The horsepower output of the pump.

b. The pressure at 1
c. The pressure at 2

2. The dimensions of a gravity dam are as shown. The specific weight of water is 9.81 kN/m 3 and that of the
masonry is (23.00 + 0.3A) kN/m3, considering hydrostatic uplift calculate:

a. The factor of safety against overturning.

b. The factor of safety against sliding. Use µ = (0.5 + 0.1C).
c. The stress at the heel.
