later. (This is just an easy method to assist learners to draw the
animal, but they can draw it through observation alone too).
• Discuss different types of animals with your child. Help them decide what their favourite animal is. If you do not have access to

• Look at different images of their favourite animal. Print different examples of their chosen animal if below for examples of

• Look at the habitat of their animal. Where do they live? What do they eat? What do the plants in
their environment look like? What do their footprints and skin markings look like?
1. Choose your animal: Close your eyes and think about an animal that you identify with/ your favourite animal. Ask yourself what
qualities you would admire in the animal i.e. strength, gracefulness, etc.
2. Choose a photograph/ picture of your animal: The animal must have a shape and be in a position that you would like to draw in
your mandala. You will be drawing the animal in a pleasing proportion within the inner circle of your mandala.
3. Take a photocopy of the photograph (optional): (if you have access to a copier). You may want it to be a similar size as the one
you are going to draw in the inner circle of your mandala as this will make the process easier. If you do not have access to a
LEARNER copy machine you can draw directly from observing the photograph.
4. Draw a circle/ mandala: On an A3 white paper (or A4 if you don’t have A3) draw 2 concentric circles. This can be done with two
dinner plates of different sizes (or anything circular that you can find) to create a ‘border’ within the mandala. See page 4.
5. Cut the rectangular A3/ A4 paper into the shape of a square. See page 4. Leave some space around the circle for your designs.
6. Draw a circle on your photocopy: Draw a circle on the animal in your photocopy.
7. Divide the circles into 4: Divide the inner circle of your mandala and the circle you have drawn on your photocopy into 4 quarters
using 2 very faint/ light lines of the same length (a cross).
Now you created the base of your artwork for this term and will be ready to start drawing in next week’s lesson.
8. Homework: research what plants etc. could be found in the environment of the animal, its habits, what it eats, the exact shapes
of its markings and the shape of its foot print. Make sketches or find photos of these. These will be used as inspiration in the
upcoming lessons.
Informal / Formal
