ABSTRACT

Heavy metals are metallic elements which have a high atomic weight and a density much greater
(at least ( 5 times) than water. in small quantities certain heavy metals such as zinc (Zn), copper
(Cu) are nutritionally essential for a healthy life as the building blocks of our bodies. They are
required for body structure, fluid balance, protein structures and to produce hormones. The
objectives of this study are to examine the presence of heavy metals in selected cosmetic
products and to gather a background knowledge of their concentrations and to assess their
potential effects. Samples of commonly used personal care products (cosmetics) were purchased
from local markets of ishara. At these shops one and buy personal care products imported from
developed, developing countries as well as locally manufactured by unauthorized national
companies where no or less quality control measures are applied. Keeping in view its daily use
and its possible health consequences we purchased 16 samples. All the samples were transferred
to the laboratory for the estimation of heavy metal analysis. From the results obtained, not all the
metals analysed were detected except Nickel (Ni). Magnesium (Mn) has the highest
concentration followed by cadium (Cd) and lead (Pb) has the least while nickel (Ni) was not
present in all the samples. We concluded that the continuous use of these cosmetic could result
in an increase in the heavy metals level in the human body beyond acceptable limits
