islands are the Mindanao landmass, Basilan, Jolo, Tawitawi, and Dinagat.

As of 2015, it had a total population of 24,135,775, representing 23.90% of the entire population
of the Philippines.
The island group is bordered, clockwise from the North, by the Sulu Sea, Dipolog Strait, Bohol
Sea, Surigao Strait, Leyte Gulf, Philippine Sea, and the Celebes Sea.

Mindanao has six (6) regions, namely, Region IX (Zamboanga Peninsula), Region X (Northern
Mindanao), Region XI (Davao Region), Region XII (SOCCSKSARGEN), Region XIII (Caraga),
and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

The regions of Mindanao encompass a total of sixteen (16) provinces, with an aggregate of
thirty-three (33) cities, and 422 municipalities. The total number of barangays in the island group
is 10,084.

DISCUSSION

The Zamboanga Peninsula, officially designated

as Region IX, is an administrative region in the
Philippines occupying the western section
of Mindanao. It covers 3 provinces,
namely, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur,
and Zamboanga Sibugay, as well as 1 highly
urbanized city (Zamboanga City) and the component
city of Isabela. The regional center is the City
of Pagadian.

Its population as determined by the 2015 Census was

3,629,783. This represented 15.04% of the overall
population of the Mindanao island group, or 3.59%
of the entire population of the Philippines.

Zamboanga Peninsula
is bordered, clockwise
from the Northeast,
by the Dipolog Strait,
Bohol Sea, Northern
Mindanao, Illana Bay,
Moro Gulf (Celebes
Sea), Sibuguey Bay,
Basilan Strait, Autonomous Region in Muslim
Mindanao (Sulu Archipelago), and the Sulu Sea.

AGRICULTURE AND FISHERIES

Total agricultural land area comprised almost half

(45.2%) of the entire land area. Due to the increase
in the no. of farms and area planted over 1991
estimates, the average farm size increased from
2.87 ha. (per farm) to 3.11 ha. in 2002. Area
harvested likewise increased by 5.8%.
ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE has the highest
number of farms. The total farms for the
province accounted for 41.2 % of the total farms
in the region.

PALAY COCONUT BANANA

PALAY is the major temporary crop in the region. Total palay production increased by 2.62%.
COCONUT is the dominant permanent crop. All provinces have the same top three crops namely,
COCONUT, RUBBER & BANANA. Zamboanga City showed the highest improvement in
palayproduction.

Raising of chicken is the primary poultry raising

activity. (Zamboanga del Sur contributed most.)

Other agricultural activities:

 Ornamental & flower gardening (excluding
orchid) are more common.
 High percentage increases in mushroom
culture & sericulture/silk/cocoon activity.

 Coastline is about 43% of Mindanao's total coastline. Major sea

products include tuna, herring sardines, anchovies and mackerel.
Shrimps, prawns, lobsters, crabs, squid and cuttlefish also abound.

 Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone and Freeport Authority

(ZamboEcozone) Only freeport in Visayas & Mindanao Agriculture
and Fisheries.

 Summary of Aquaculture Production by Culture Environment &

Region, 2009 247,634 metric tons 21,650 metric tons 2,477,392
metric tons.

 Zamboanga City showed a large increase in fishery production,

which offset the declines in other provinces. Region 9 makes up
10% of aquaculture production in the country. (2nd among regions)
Total Aquaculture (Philippines): 2,477,392

TOURISM AND CULTURE

1. Merloquet Falls
One could argue that the most majestic falls in Zamboanga city
are the Merloquet Falls. This natural beauty looks more like an
ancient ruin where a waterfall has magically decided to run
through it, rather than a wall of rocks. It’s truly breathtaking.

Surrounded by jungle, you’ll come across a cool pool of water

being fed by tiers of waterfall rocks. There are a couple platforms
under the biggest section of the waterfall where you can give
yourself a waterfall massage or just hang out and listen to the soothing sounds.

2. Fort Pilar

You can most certainly see the Spanish influence in Fort

Pilar, a 17th-century fort of defense built and used by the
Spanish military.

Upon your visit, you’ll be welcomed by a large courtyard

with a wide brick path leading up to the regal fortress
which looks like something out of the Alamo. Fort Pilar is adorned with dozens of bright white
stars surrounding an outdoor shrine for Roman Catholics who believe that the Christian mother
Mary appeared here many years ago.

3. Yakan Weaving Village

At Yakan Weaving Village, you can observe colorful

textiles being made on the spot. You’ll most likely
recognize these popular textiles as you’ve seen them
in the form of purses, parkas, and more along your
travels in the Philippines.

There are plenty of handicrafts to be purchased such as hand carved Basilian Pira Swords,
satchels, scarves, and textiles to take home as souvenirs. You won’t find price tags on these
goods so get ready to haggle a price that leaves both you and the vendor satisfied.

or 4.64% of the entire population of the
Philippines.

which means “to gather”. It is a gathering of
Bukidnon tribespeople for a purpose. It can
mean a datuship ritual, a wedding ceremony, a
thanksgiving festival during harvest time, a
peace pact, or all of these put together.
Showcasing the unique indigenous culture of
Bukidnon, the Kaamulan is held annually in the

in 1917.

As an ethnic festival, the Kaamulan celebrates the customs and traditions of the seven tribal
groups that originally inhabited the Bukidnon region, namely, the Bukidnon, Higaonon,
Talaandig, Manobo, Matigsalug, Tigwahanon and Umayamnon. Several tribal folks representing
these seven hill tribes of Bukidnon gather in unity with the local dwellers in town, wearing their
intricately woven costumes studded with trinkets, anklets, earrings, necklaces, leglets,
headdresses and amulets. They dance together, chant, perform ancient rituals, and compete in
indigenous sports.

the Mahogany group of plants, and whose edible fruits
are a favorite for many people in the Philippines. The
origin of Lanzones in Southeast Asia has made it a
critical part of this festival.

3. TINAGO FALLS- It is one of the main tourist attractions in

Iligan, a city known as the City of Majestic Waterfalls.
Tinago Falls is a waterfall on the Agus River, located in
between the town of Linamon and Iligan City, Lanao del
Norte in the northern part of the Philippine island of
Mindanao.
