Course reflection

Coming into this course, I expected it to be heavy on ethics and how to ethically run a

business. I was not prepared for the many other things I was going to learn, and how planet

jockey really made my eyes open up to how quick the business world is. I have changed very

much since the beginning of this semester and this class has done a lot to help me understand

how to ethically work in a workspace and lead people with low risk of failure.

Planet jockey was very interesting to me because in my eyes it was a great tool to use

because of the fast pace and quick thinking you have to do to get the correct answers and make

your business getting momentum to be winners. I found myself heavily questioning decisions

and walking around my room trying to understand which decision is the best, especially when it

came to the whistleblower chapter and the two questions when a whistleblower emerged in the

organization. Planet jockey really makes you feel like you are the CEO, and the one calling the

shots because of how fast pace it is like I mentioned, and the real life decision making questions

that you’re hammered with every chapter. I feel like planet jockey better myself Morley because

having decisions where my decision affects others really puts a lot of stress on you, and it is

something that is very hard to replicate in school. The real world will provide that, but it is a lot

better to be prepared to do that.

The Fryer textbook was also very helpful with deepening my knowledge of moral

standards and standards that will be held within organizations. One example I remember is from

chapter 4 when we spoke about state of nature, and how that occurs in our daily lives. State of

nature is the freedom of liberty to conduct our lives as we feel, whether that be religion or

business. That had always stood out to me because of how much I thought about that before this

course without knowing the true definition and true title of what it was. Being surrounded in a

healthy society is one of the keys to life, and chapter 4 highlighted that for me in many ways.

Building off of this, the textbook Perusall was a great way to interact with my classmates

and to understand parts of the chapter that did not make sense to me when I read it over the first

time. I enjoy speaking with other classmates and debating parts of the chapter that may lean both

ways. I think it is a very effective tool to use in the classroom and I’m very happy this class uses

this website. Just reading the textbook alone by myself does not better me as much as Perusall

helps. I learned many new views about this textbook just from the website, and getting other

peoples opinions. I think brainstorming is one of the best ways of learning. And perusal really

allows me to learn in a better way.

One way I changed in my leadership styles over the semester is taking a breath before

making a fast decision. Are used to be very straightforward and a shot collar right when stuff

happens. I learned through planet jockey that taking a deep breath and stepping away from a

situation for a couple of minutes can improve decision-making and also provide a clearer mind

for myself. This has led me to even better decision making in my daily life, because taking a

deep breath and looking at a situation closer always allows me to input a better decision. I plan to
continue using what I’ve learned in my own personal development by writing down specific

points from chapters and planet jockey on how to handle situations in a workspace. It is very

hard to handle certain situations and workspaces because of how much stress there is when it

comes to getting a decision wrong and messing something up. This class has been very

productive for me and I look forward to using all of my learning material in my first job once I

graduate from college. This class has done a lot for me and helped me with my mental process.

I have just emailed you regarding my research project and I can’t thank you enough for

understanding this semester with my mental struggles with the loss of family and endless stress.

Thank you so much Professor Erwin.
