BIM Object User Guide for Roof & Wall Panels

Autodesk Revit (2012 onward)

User Guide

 Getting Started
The Kingspan panel components are modelled as curtain panel families, therefore must be used in conjunction
with the curtain wall/sloped glazing tools.

 Choosing Products
Decide if you are modelling a roof or a wall. Contact Kingspan or go to www.kingspanpanels.co.uk/products for
product information.

Contact Kingspan envirocare Technical Services and use the flowchart below to decide:
 Which panel product you wish to use and which width.
 Horizontal or Vertical
 The direction of lay, left to right or right to left.

Once you have chosen a product, you need to think about panel thickness. The various thicknesses for each
panel are set as family types, so this doesn’t have to be chosen until a panel is selected in Revit.

 Loading Kingspan Panel Components into your project

Open the Revit project and on the insert tab of the ribbon, select load family. Locate the panel component you
have just downloaded and click open. The panel is now loaded into the project.

 Modelling the Roof / Walls

To model the wall, on the ribbon, select the home tab and wall tool. In the types selector, select curtain wall.
Draw the wall in the same direction as the direction of lay.

So if you are using a left to right panel, draw the wall from left to right. This will ensure the starter panel is at the
correct width and not the left over sized panel at the end of the run.
To model the roof, on the ribbon, select the home tab and roof tool. Choose the level and in the type selector,
select sloped glazing. Sketch the roof.

Curtain Wall Sloped Glazing

To ensure the starter panel is on the correct side, read Setting up the curtain system - Roofs

 Setting up the curtain system - Walls

 Select the wall and in the type properties, duplicate and rename.
 Under the construction heading, use the dropdown to change the ‘curtain panel’ parameter to the loaded
Kingspan Panel component, selecting the correct panel thickness.
 For vertical panels, change vertical grid pattern layout to ‘fixed distance’ and insert the panel width dimension
into the spacing box. The horizontal grid pattern (which will be the length of the panel) can also be determined.
 For horizontal panels repeat the process above but vice versa.

 Setting up the curtain system – Roofs

 Select the roof and in the type properties, duplicate and rename.
 Under the construction heading, use the dropdown to change the ‘curtain panel’ parameter to the loaded
Kingspan Panel component, selecting the correct panel thickness.
 Change grid 1 pattern to ‘fixed distance’ and insert the panel width dimension into the spacing box.
 The grid 2 pattern (which will be the length of the panel) can also be determined.

The default orientation for roofs in Revit means that the left to right panel is the correct panel. If you want to use
the right to left panels, the curtain grid needs to be amended. To do this, select the sloped glazing and click on
the configure grid layout symbol.

Locate the x/y origin point and drag the arrow in the x direction so that it is now on the right. This moves the
starter panel correctly to the right hand side.

 Notes on Roofs and Walls

Please note that the maximum number of panels a roof / wall can be split into is 200. If this is exceeded,
additional roof / walls will need to be created.

If the roof / wall length is not multiple of the Kingspan Panel width, an error may occur, click delete type and
replace panels. This will replace the error panels with system panels, which can be replaced for a bespoke
panel, created by the user.

Even if an error message does not appear, end panels still need to be changed to be bespoke panels.

End panel is shorter

than the standard size
so will need to be
replaced.

 Wall-Lite and Polycarb Panels

These two panel components are different to the rest as they do not have varying thicknesses and they are
transparent.

They sit in between the regular panels which do vary in thickness, so in order for the external faces of the
panels to align correctly they have an extra parameter called ‘AdjPanelOverallThickness’.

This can be found by selecting a Wall-Lite / Polycarb panel and looking in the properties panel under
dimensions.

Standard panel
(thickness 100mm)

Wall-Lite panel

Here you must type in the thickness of the adjacent standard panels.

 Changing the Panels

Now the panels have been placed, you can change the material.
Tab select a panel and in the properties panel under Materials and finishes, you can change the material.
Please refer to the Kingspan website for more information, www.kingspanpanels.co.uk/products.

Tab select a panel, right click and click on ‘Select Panels’ then ‘Panels on Host’, select on host to select all
panels on a roof / wall at the same time.

Tab select a panel, right click and click ‘Select All Instances’, then ‘In Entire Project’, to select all panels in a
project at the same time.
