A. Introduction What I Need to Know
Do you know why we are not allowed to go out in our home nowadays?
Yes, because of this pandemic we have what we are living in a “new normal”.
What do you understand when you hear this word? What we can do while we are in a quarantine?

In this lesson, you will be doing learning tasks that will help you describe the appearance and uses of
homogenous and heterogeneous mixtures.
What Is New

Learning Task No. 1: Study the given sample materials. Identify the type of mixtures for each sample.(See page 14 of the LM)
B. Development What I Know

Learning Task 2: Determine the changes that will happen in the materials when mixed together. Copy the chart below in your notebook.

Part A. With the assistance of your family members, prepare the

materials as presented in the table below.( See page 15 of the LM )

Part B. . Using the same materials you used in part A, observe the mixtures if after sometime, the solute materials will be visible or
settled down. Complete the table below for your observation. Copy and complete the table in your notebook.
( See page 16 of the LM)

Learning Task 3: Read the characteristics of mixtures given in the second column. Identify if it is homogeneous or heterogeneous
mixture. Place a check mark under the column. Copy your answer in your notebook.( See page 16 of the LM)

C. Engagement What’s More

Learning Task 4: Study the mixtures below and classify whether it is a solution, suspension or colloid. Write them in the appropriate
column.(See page 17 of the LM )
Learning Task 5 Study the materials inside the box. Choose two materials and combine them to make either heterogeneous or
homogeneous mixtures. (See page 17 of the LM )
D. Assimilation What I Have Learned
 Mixture is a combination of two or more sub-stances present in varied proportion.
 There are two types of mixtures. One is homogenous mixture which contains substances that are evenly mixed and is uniform
throughout in terms of physical appearance. The other one is heteroge-neous mixture which contains component substances
that are usually easy to distinguish.
 There are three types of homogenous mixtures. These are (1) solid homogenous mixtures, (2) liquid homogenous mixtures and
(3) gaseous homogenous mixtures.
 In heterogeneous or non-uniform mixtures, mixtures can be natural or man-made. Suspensions and colloids are the two forms
of heterogeneous mixtures.

Learning Task 6 :Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the letter of the correct answer on a separate sheet of paper.
1. Mixed nuts, halo-halo and buko salad are examples of what kind of mixture?
A. gas C. homogeneous
B. heterogeneous D. liquid
2. What do you call the combination of two or more substances present in varied proportion where each materials are distinct and
visibly seen by naked eyes?
A. compound C. mixture
B. cream D. water
3. Which of the following is an example of heterogeneous mixture?
A. corn oil C. water and sand
B. water and salt D. water and sugar
4. Which of the following best describes colloids?
A. clear, flawless substance C. dark, black substance
B. clear, pure substance D. sticky, creamy substance

For numbers 5-6, choose from the given choices below:

I. Air II. Fruit salad III. Salt solution IV. Pizza

5. Which of the following material(s) are homogenous mixture(s)?

A. I and II C. I and III
B. I only D. II and IV
6. Which of the following material(s) are heterogeneous mixture(s)?
A. I and II C. I and III
B. I only D. II and IV
For numbers 7-8 , choose from the given choices below.
I. Colloid II. Suspension III. Solution IV. Salt and pepper
7. Which is TRUE about homogenous mixture?
A. I, II, and III C. All of the above
B. I and II only D. IV only
8. Which is TRUE about heterogeneous mixture?
A. I, II, and III C. All of the above
B. I and II only D. IV only
9. Which of the following materials DOES NOT BELONG to the group?
A. salt and pepper C. mayonnaise
B. coins and pins D. cereals with milk
10. This material(s) is/are BEST described as having the same appearance.
I. Homogenous III. Non-uniform
II. Uniform IV. Heterogeneous
A. I and II B. I and IV C. B and III D. II and IV

with water. What makes it happen. The density of the
substance has something to do to its property to sinks or
floats in a liquid. In the case of water and oil, oil floats over
the water because water is denser the oil. Other examples
are a sawdust and water, gasoline and water.
There are also substances that are sink or settle
down on the bottom. Example is mixtures of water and soil.
When you mixt the water and soil thoroughly then left for a
while, you noticed that the soil will settle at the bottom of
the container. It happens because the soil id denser (heavier)
than water so it sinks.
Some suspensions do not separate because the very
tiny particles can stay suspended. For example, whole milk is
a suspension of cream and milk. Peanut butter is a
suspension of oil and mashed peanut.
Oil and vinegar dressing is also an example of
suspension. In this mixture, the particles of one substance
scatters through another substance without dissolving it.
A suspension has larger particles which is visible and
settle out when left undisturbed. Other examples of
suspensions are tomato juice, fine sand or silt in water.

distributed. Colloids are homogeneous mixtures
Colloids are heterogeneous mixtures with intermediate particle wherein the component particles are bigger than
size between a solution and a suspension. Colloid particles may

Colloid is a special kind of mixture that contains very tiny mixtures where components can be clearly

Concentrated colloids are often cloudy or opaque. Dilute
colloids appear to be homogeneous because they dispersed
particles are small. Dispersed colloid particles scatter light, a
phenomenon called Tyndall Effect. Tyndall Effect can be used to
determine the amount of colloid particles in suspension.
Types of Colloids:
1. SOL- is a solid dispersed in either a solid or liquid. Examples of
solid sols (solid dispersed in solid) are opal, pearls and other
colored glass like stained glass. Examples of dispersed in liquid
are blood paints, gum, muddy water and some forms of
pigmented ink.
2. EMULSION- is a liquid dispersed in either a liquid or a solid.
Examples are milk, cod-liver oil, butter, mayonnaise, most
ointments and creams and cosmetics.
3. AEROSOLS- are suspensions of liquid or solid particles in a gas.
Clouds and fog are natural aerosols, which consist of water
droplets dispersed in air. Dusty air and smoke are aerosols,
Insecticides, perfume spray and spray paint are some artificial
aerosol.
4. FOAMS- consist of dispersed in liquid (liquid foams) or solid
(solid foams), Styrofoam, pumice, yeast bread, cake icing are
examples of solid foams.
